SHRM-SCP certification: cost, requirements and exam
The SHRM-SCP — SHRM Senior Certified Professional — is SHRM’s certification for HR professionals in strategic roles. You need three years of strategic HR work, or three years holding the SHRM-CP. The exam has 134 questions in a four-hour appointment at a Prometric test centre, and costs US$350 to US$499 depending on SHRM membership and deadline. What is SHRM-SCP certification?
SHRM-SCP stands for SHRM Senior Certified Professional. It is issued by SHRM, the Society for Human Resource Management, and it is the senior of SHRM’s two certifications. SHRM describes it as designed for senior HR professionals who lead strategic initiatives and align HR strategy with organisational goals — work such as developing HR policies, setting HR strategy and shaping culture.
So what is SHRM-SCP certification in practice? It is a credential with two gates: SHRM checks that your recent HR work is strategic in nature, and the exam then tests both what you know and how you judge realistic workplace situations. The SHRM-SCP senior certified professional title is not meant for people early in an HR career; that is what the SHRM-CP is for.

SHRM-SCP certification cost
SHRM charges one fee schedule for both of its exams, the SHRM-CP and the SHRM-SCP. What you pay depends on whether you are a SHRM member and whether you apply by the early-bird deadline. Every rate already includes a US$50 non-refundable application fee; the standard rates also include a US$49 non-refundable standard deadline fee.
SHRM states that its early-bird prices took effect on 3 June 2026. Its 2026 Certification Handbook still prints older, higher SHRM-SCP fees, so the fee page is the more recent source — and the price shown when you apply is the one that binds. SHRM also lists lower rates for military candidates and students, and team rates for employers.
Budget for a second attempt separately: a retest means applying again as a new candidate in a later window. The full SHRM-SCP certification cost also includes any preparation you buy and, every three years, the recertification fee.
- Early bird: US$350 for SHRM members, US$450 for non-members
- Standard deadline: US$399 for members, US$499 for non-members
- Recertification every three years: US$165 members, US$210 non-members

SHRM-SCP requirements
There are two ways to meet the SHRM-SCP requirements. The first is a work history of at least three years performing strategic-level HR or HR-related duties. The second is for SHRM-CP holders who have held that credential for at least three years and work in, or are moving into, a strategic role.
SHRM’s handbook adds detail to the SHRM-SCP certification requirements: you must be able to show at least 1,000 hours of such work per calendar year. Your current or most recent HR work must be strategic — setting HR strategy, developing policy, shaping culture — rather than operational. No degree is required for either route.
SHRM audits applications. Its fee page warns that failing to comply with an audit means forfeiting all fees, so document your strategic duties carefully before you apply.

SHRM-SCP exam format, testing windows and pass rate
The SHRM-SCP exam has 134 multiple-choice questions: 80 stand-alone knowledge questions and 54 situational judgment items that describe a workplace scenario and ask for the best course of action. Twenty-four of the 134 are unscored field-test items, randomly mixed with the scored ones. The appointment lasts four hours, with 3 hours 40 minutes of testing time split into two independently timed sections of 110 minutes each.
You cannot book any day you like. SHRM tests in two windows a year, only in person at Prometric test centres. The current cycle: testing from 1 December 2026 to 15 February 2027, with early-bird applications from 3 June to 31 August 2026 and standard applications from 1 September to 24 December 2026.
SHRM does not publish a numeric pass mark. Scores run from 120 to 200, the passing standard is set with the Modified Angoff method, and everyone who passes is reported as 200. SHRM does publish a global exam pass rate for the SHRM-SCP of 52%, without stating the period it covers — compared with 69% for the SHRM-CP.

What is on the SHRM-SCP exam?
Both SHRM exams are built on the SHRM Body of Applied Skills and Knowledge (BASK), which SHRM calls the blueprint for the SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP. The BASK names nine behavioural competencies and 14 HR functional areas, grouped into six weighted clusters. Behavioural competencies make up half the exam, HR knowledge the other half.
- Leadership — 19%
- Business — 17.5%
- Interpersonal — 13.5%
- People — 19%
- Organization — 18%
- Workplace — 13%

SHRM-SCP prep course and training
No course is required to sit the SHRM-SCP; your work history is what qualifies you. Preparation still matters: 54 of the 134 questions are situational judgment items built on SHRM’s BASK, and SHRM reports a 52% pass rate.
SHRM’s own SHRM-SCP training comes as the SHRM Certification Prep System, available self-study, instructor-led or for teams, and SHRM Certification Prep+, an instructor-led SHRM-SCP prep course offered year-round in classroom, virtual and hybrid formats. SHRM advertises more than 2,700 practice questions in the Prep System and says it features questions previously used on actual SHRM exams. Whatever course you take, check it against the BASK weights above.
Study plans, practice tests and SHRM’s free sample items are covered on the SHRM-SCP study guide page.

SHRM-SCP salary: is it worth it?
SHRM does not publish a SHRM-SCP salary figure in dollars. Its certification page states that SHRM-certified professionals report salaries 14% to 15% higher than peers without the certification, citing its own 2022 HR Careers Study. That is SHRM’s self-reported survey result for its certifications in general, not a SHRM-SCP-specific or independent figure.
Whether the SHRM-SCP is worth it depends on your role. It is aimed at strategic HR work, so it fits best when you already set policy or strategy and want that recognised. With a published global pass rate of 52%, plan to study seriously rather than treat the exam as a formality.

SHRM-SCP recertification
The SHRM-SCP runs on a three-year cycle that ends on the last day of your birth month. For SHRM-SCP recertification you either earn 60 professional development credits (PDCs) within the cycle, or retake the exam in the last year of the cycle.
Recertifying by PDCs costs US$165 for SHRM members and US$210 for non-members, or US$240 and US$285 if you submit during the 60-day grace period. The retest route carries a real risk: SHRM states that if you fail, your credential is revoked and you must reapply and pass to regain it.

SHRM-SCP vs SHRM-CP
Both exams have the same structure — 134 questions in four hours, the same BASK clusters and the same fees. The difference is the level and the entry bar. SHRM says the SHRM-CP needs no degree or experience and suits HR operations and policy execution; the SHRM-SCP requires three years of strategic HR work or three years holding the SHRM-CP.
The published pass rates show the step up: 69% for the SHRM-CP and 52% for the SHRM-SCP. If your work is mostly operational, the SHRM-CP is the right exam; holding it for three years then opens the SHRM-SCP.
