ITIL 4 Foundation Retake Rules – Waiting Period, Cost & Attempts

What are the ITIL 4 Foundation retake rules?

There is no mandatory waiting period—you can retake as soon as you’re ready. You need to purchase a new exam voucher for each attempt. There’s no limit on attempts, and previous failures don’t appear on your certificate or official record.

You can retake the ITIL 4 Foundation exam as soon as you are ready. There is no mandatory waiting period enforced by PeopleCert. You will need to purchase a new exam voucher, and you can attempt the exam as many times as necessary. Your previous failure does not appear on any future certificate or official record.

Official ITIL 4 Foundation Retake Policy

The ITIL 4 Foundation exam is administered by PeopleCert, the official examination institute for ITIL certifications. Unlike some other IT certifications, PeopleCert does not impose a mandatory waiting period between attempts.

Attempts Allowed

There is no limit on the number of times you can attempt the ITIL 4 Foundation exam. You can retake it as many times as needed until you pass. Each attempt requires a valid exam voucher.

Waiting Period

PeopleCert does not enforce a waiting period after a failed attempt. Technically, you could schedule your retake for the next available slot. However, booking immediately after failing is rarely advisable from a preparation standpoint.

The absence of a waiting period is a policy convenience, not a recommendation to rush. Most candidates benefit from taking at least one to two weeks to review their weak areas before attempting again.

Provider Differences: Online vs Test Center

ITIL 4 Foundation exams can be taken either online (proctored via webcam) or at an authorized test center. The retake policy is identical for both formats:

  • No mandatory waiting period for either format
  • New voucher required for each attempt
  • Same exam content and passing score (65%)
  • Same certificate issued upon passing

If you failed at a test center, you may choose to retake online, or vice versa. The format does not affect your eligibility or the validity of your certification.

Identity Re-Verification

For each exam attempt, you must complete identity verification again. This includes providing a valid government-issued ID and, for online proctored exams, completing the room scan and ID capture process. Your previous verification does not carry over.

Retake Costs and Vouchers

Typical Retake Pricing

A new ITIL 4 Foundation exam voucher typically costs between $350 and $400 USD when purchased directly from PeopleCert or authorized training providers. Prices may vary slightly by region and currency.

This is the same price as your first attempt. There is no discounted retake voucher offered by PeopleCert for ITIL 4 Foundation.

When a New Voucher Is Required

Every exam attempt requires a valid voucher. If you fail, your original voucher is consumed and cannot be reused. You must purchase a new voucher for your retake, regardless of how quickly you rebook.

Some training providers offer exam bundles that include a free retake voucher if you fail on your first attempt. Check your original purchase terms to see if this applies to you.

Training Provider Bundles vs Direct Booking

Many accredited training organizations (ATOs) sell course-and-exam bundles. These packages sometimes include:

  • One free retake voucher (typically valid for 6–12 months)
  • Extended access to course materials
  • Additional practice exams

If you originally purchased a bundle with a retake guarantee, contact your training provider to claim your free retake voucher. If you booked directly through PeopleCert without a bundle, you will need to purchase a new voucher at full price.

Common Retake Misconceptions

”Permanent Failure Record”

There is no public or employer-accessible record of failed ITIL attempts. PeopleCert maintains internal records for administrative purposes, but these are not disclosed to employers, clients, or any third parties.

Once you pass, your certificate shows only your passing result. There is no indication that you required multiple attempts. Your certification is identical to someone who passed on their first try.

”Employer Visibility”

Employers cannot query PeopleCert to check your exam history. They can only verify whether you hold a valid ITIL certification. The verification process confirms your name, certificate number, and certification status—not your attempt history.

Unless you voluntarily disclose that you failed previously, there is no mechanism for an employer to discover this information.

”Ban After Multiple Fails”

PeopleCert does not ban candidates for failing multiple times. You can attempt the ITIL 4 Foundation exam indefinitely, as long as you purchase a valid voucher for each attempt.

However, if you have failed multiple times, it is worth pausing to evaluate whether your study approach needs to change fundamentally rather than simply rebooking immediately.

When to Realistically Rebook

Why Immediate Rebooking Is Risky

The absence of a mandatory waiting period does not mean immediate rebooking is wise. Candidates who rebook within 24–48 hours of failing rarely perform better on their second attempt unless they can clearly identify exactly what went wrong.

Failing ITIL 4 Foundation typically indicates a conceptual gap or a misunderstanding of how ITIL terminology is applied in exam scenarios. These issues require focused review, not just more practice questions.

Most candidates benefit from waiting one to three weeks before retaking. This provides time to:

  • Review the exam feedback (if provided by your training provider)
  • Identify weak topic areas based on your performance
  • Revisit official ITIL 4 materials, particularly the Service Value System and Guiding Principles
  • Complete additional practice exams with a focus on understanding explanations, not just memorizing answers

If you failed by a significant margin, consider whether a structured review of the official ITIL 4 Foundation publication or a refresher course would be more effective than self-study alone. For a detailed preparation schedule, see our 7, 14, and 30 day recovery study plans.

Closing

The ITIL 4 Foundation retake policy is straightforward: no waiting period, no attempt limits, and no public record of failures. The primary consideration is cost—each attempt requires a new voucher at full price unless you have a retake guarantee from your training provider. If you just failed, our guide on what to do immediately after failing can help you navigate the next 48 hours.

The policy gives you flexibility. How you use that flexibility—whether to rush or to prepare properly—will determine your outcome on the next attempt.
