AZ-900 study guide: the official outline and a study plan that follows it
Microsoft publishes its own study guide for Exam AZ-900: Microsoft Azure Fundamentals. It lists every skill the exam measures, as of 20 July 2026, and links the official learning material. Start there, then use the plan below to turn the outline into preparation.

What the Microsoft AZ-900 study guide contains
The Microsoft AZ-900 study guide is a page on Microsoft Learn. Microsoft says it “should help you understand what to expect on the exam and includes a summary of the topics the exam might cover and links to additional resources”.
In practice it gives you four things: the three skill areas with their weightings, the full list of objectives under each, a table of study resources, and the exam basics — that a score of 700 or greater is required to pass, that a free practice assessment and an exam sandbox exist, and how to request accommodations if you need extra time or other changes.
- Describe cloud concepts — 25–30%
- Describe Azure architecture and services — 35–40%
- Describe Azure management and governance — 30–35%

Is there an AZ-900 study guide PDF?
Microsoft publishes the study guide as a web page, not as a separate download. If you want an AZ-900 study guide PDF to annotate, save or print the page from your browser. The copy then keeps its “skills measured as of” date, which is how you will notice later whether Microsoft has revised the exam since you saved it.
Be careful with PDFs offered elsewhere under the same name. Such a file may be an older version of the outline, or not a study guide at all but a collection of claimed exam questions. Compare the date and the objectives with Microsoft’s current page before you rely on one.

Official AZ-900 study materials
The core AZ-900 study material comes from Microsoft itself. The study guide’s resource table points to self-paced learning paths and modules or an instructor-led course, the Azure documentation and the Cloud Adoption Framework, Microsoft Q&A and Azure community support, and video series such as the Exam Readiness Zone.
For the learning paths, Microsoft recommends a four-part series called Introduction to Cloud Infrastructure and advises completing all of it if you are preparing for AZ-900. It includes hands-on exercises, for which you now need your own Azure subscription, such as a free trial.
Other AZ-900 study materials — books, videos, flashcards — can help, but measure each one against the outline. If it does not use current names such as Microsoft Entra ID or Microsoft Purview, it was probably written for an older version of the exam.

A four-step AZ-900 exam prep plan
Microsoft gives no official number of study hours, so this plan is built on stages rather than on a calendar. Move on when a stage is done, not when a set number of days has passed.
- Map the scope: read the whole Microsoft Azure Fundamentals study guide once and mark the objectives you could not explain to a colleague today.
- Learn the concepts: work through the Introduction to Cloud Infrastructure learning paths, giving the most time to architecture and services, which carries the biggest weighting.
- Make it concrete: create a few resources yourself — a resource group, a virtual machine, a storage account, a policy assignment — so that the names in the outline become things you have seen.
- Test and close gaps: take Microsoft’s free practice assessment and a second set of practice questions, then go back to the objectives behind every wrong answer.

When your AZ-900 prep is finished
Your AZ-900 prep is done when no skill area is a clear weak spot, not when you have finished a course. Practice percentages do not convert into Microsoft’s 1 to 1,000 scale, so look at the pattern: are your mistakes spread thinly, or clustered in one area?
Microsoft’s own practice assessment helps with the wording, but Microsoft is explicit that its questions “are not the same as what you will see on the exam”. Certsqill’s AZ-900 practice questions are expert-developed against the same outline, explain every answer option, and show a readiness score per domain, which is exactly the pattern view you need at this stage. Access comes with a 7-day money-back guarantee.

The last few days before the exam
Re-read the study guide one last time and check the “skills measured as of” date has not changed since you started. Revisit the objectives you marked in step one.
If you are testing online, run Pearson VUE’s system test on the computer and in the room you will use, and plan to check in early: Microsoft opens check-in 30 minutes before your appointment and says the process takes about 15 minutes.
