What is the CBEST test?
The CBEST test is the California Basic Educational Skills Test, administered for the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC). It is one of several ways to verify basic skills in reading, writing and mathematics, which most applicants for a credential, certificate or permit to serve in California public schools must do.
There is no "CBEST certification" as such: passing the CBEST exam does not make you certified, it satisfies one requirement on the way to a credential or permit. The CBEST test page notes that the CBEST is no longer required for most teaching credentials if you have a bachelor’s degree, so check your specific credential before you register.

CBEST requirements and alternatives
The CBEST test page lists no CBEST test requirements such as a degree or minimum age. The CBEST requirements that matter are on the credential side: the CTC accepts several routes to the basic skills requirement.
- Passing the CBEST
- Passing CSET: Writing Skills together with CSET: Multiple Subjects
- Qualifying college coursework in reading, writing and mathematics with a grade of B or better
- Qualifying SAT, ACT or AP scores, or a basic skills exam from another state

What is on the CBEST test?
Reading has 50 multiple-choice questions: about 40% critical analysis and evaluation and about 60% comprehension and research skills, with no outside knowledge required. Mathematics has 50 multiple-choice questions: about 30% estimation, measurement and statistical principles, 35% computation and problem solving, and 35% numerical and graphic relationships. Calculators are not allowed.
Writing has two essays with different kinds of topic: one analyzes a situation or statement, the other describes a specified personal experience. All responses must be in English.

CBEST test cost
The CBEST fee is $30 per section. You register and pay for each section separately, so the cost of CBEST for all three sections is $90 if you pass each on the first try.
Your registration is valid for one year from the date of issue. If you arrive more than 15 minutes late, you may not be admitted, and absences are not refunded.

CBEST registration and test dates
For CBEST registration, create an account on the CTC Exams website. The CBEST register-and-pay step comes first, once per section, and scheduling your appointment comes second. Each section is a separate session.
CBEST test dates at test centers are year-round by appointment, Monday through Saturday except some holidays, first come, first served. CBEST testing dates for online proctoring are offered in one-week windows each month, so schedule CBEST test sessions early if you need a result by a deadline.

Where can I take the CBEST test?
You can take the CBEST at a Pearson VUE test center in the areas listed on the CBEST test page, or online-proctored from a private location such as your home. Test-center candidates may take restroom breaks, which count toward testing time; online-proctored candidates may not take breaks.

CBEST scoring and passing score
CBEST scoring uses a scaled score from 20 to 80 for each section. The CBEST passing score is 41 per section. You can also pass with one or two sections as low as 37 if your total across all three is at least 123.
At a test center you see preliminary results for Reading and Mathematics at the end of your appointment; Writing gives a receipt of completion. Online-proctored tests show no preliminary results. All CBEST scores are released within 2 weeks. Passing scores remain valid indefinitely, so there is no CBEST renewal to plan for.

Is the CBEST test hard?
The CTC and its testing site publish no pass rate on the pages we checked, so there is no official answer. What is published: you need 41 of 80 on the scaled score per section, or 123 in total, and the Mathematics section is 50 questions in 2 hours without a calculator.

Official CBEST practice tests and prep materials
The official CBEST prep materials include a practice test for each section in PDF format: a CBEST reading practice test, a CBEST math practice test and a CBEST writing practice test. The CBEST preparation page lists no price for these PDFs, which makes them the place to start if you are looking for a free practice CBEST test.
The official CBEST prep course and training option is CBEST Right Start, an interactive course for Reading, Writing and Mathematics: $35 for a 30-day subscription or $70 for 90 days. If you compare it with a CBEST prep class elsewhere, check that it follows the CBEST test specifications published on the same page.

How to study for the CBEST
Start with the CBEST test specifications, the official CBEST study guide to what each section covers, and take each official practice test once under timed conditions. Together they are the core CBEST study materials for any CBEST test prep plan. Use the results to split your time: knowing how to study for CBEST sections efficiently means starting with your weakest one.
For CBEST math practice, work without a calculator from day one, because none is allowed. For Writing, practise both essay types: the analysis of a statement and the personal experience.

CBEST practice questions
Certsqill’s CBEST practice questions are expert-developed and mapped to the official content areas of Reading and Mathematics. The CBEST questions follow the official multiple-choice format, and the CBEST math questions are written for calculator-free work.
Every question comes with an explanation for each answer option, and your results build a readiness score per content area, so you know when you are ready to book a section. A 7-day money-back guarantee applies.
