Praxis exam: Praxis Core, subject tests, fees and scores

The Praxis exam is a family of teacher licensing tests from ETS: Praxis Core measures reading, writing and math, and the Praxis Subject Assessments cover the subject and grade level you want to teach. Every test is computer-delivered, at home or at a test center, throughout the year. Fees start at $90 for one Core test, most tests are scored from 100 to 200, and each state sets its own passing score.

What is the Praxis exam?

The Praxis tests are ETS exams that states and licensing agencies use for teacher certification. ETS stresses that each state has its own requirements, so the first step is always to look up which Praxis test your state, and often your educator preparation program, asks for.

There are two big groups. Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators measures academic skills in reading, writing and mathematics. The Praxis Subject Assessments test the content and teaching knowledge for a specific license, from Elementary Education to Biology. Many candidates still search for the "Praxis 2 test" or the "Praxis II exam"; on the ETS pages we checked, the tests are called Praxis Core and Praxis Subject Assessments.

What is on the Praxis test?

It depends on the test. Each Praxis test has its own code, content categories and timing, published by ETS in a study companion for that test. The ETS Praxis test you need is therefore a specific code, not one general exam.

Some examples from the ETS study companions: Core Reading (5713) has 56 selected-response questions in 85 minutes; Core Mathematics (5733) has 56 questions in 90 minutes with an on-screen four-function calculator; Core Writing (5723) has 40 selected-response questions and two essays in 100 minutes.

The Praxis Core test

The Praxis Core test has three subtests: Reading (5713), Writing (5723) and Mathematics (5733). You can take them one at a time or book Core Combined (5752), which lets you take all three Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators test sections in the same session, at home or at a test center.

Core Mathematics covers number and quantity (about 36%), data interpretation, statistics and probability (about 32%), and algebra and geometry (about 32%), with selected-response and numeric-entry questions. The Praxis math test that a state requires can also be a subject test, such as Mathematics (5165) or the Elementary Education mathematics subtest (5003), so check the code before you study.

Praxis Subject Assessments: the Praxis test for teachers by subject

The Praxis Subject Assessments are the Praxis teacher test for a specific license. A few that candidates search for most often, with the codes ETS lists:

  • Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects (5001): four separately timed subtests (5002 to 5005), 4 hours 35 minutes in total
  • Teaching Reading: Elementary (5205): 90 selected-response and 3 constructed-response questions in 150 minutes
  • Speech-Language Pathology (5331): the Praxis speech language pathology test, 132 selected-response questions in 150 minutes
  • Biology (5236): the Praxis biology test
  • World and U.S. History: Content Knowledge (5941): the Praxis history test
  • Mathematics (5165): the Praxis math exam for secondary mathematics

The SLP Praxis exam

The SLP Praxis exam is Speech-Language Pathology (5331). ETS lists 132 selected-response questions in 150 minutes, split evenly across three categories of 44 questions each: Foundations and Professional Practice; Screening, Assessment, Evaluation, and Diagnosis; and Planning, Implementation, and Evaluation of Treatment.

The fee is $146. As with every Praxis test, the passing score is set by the state or agency that receives your score, not by ETS.

The ParaPro Praxis test for paraprofessionals

The ParaPro Assessment is the ETS test for paraprofessionals, often searched as the Praxis paraprofessional exam. ETS describes it as a general aptitude test for prospective and practicing paraprofessionals that measures skills and knowledge in reading, writing and math, and says it is required for certification in many states.

ParaPro can be taken at a test center or at home. ETS refers to the qualifying score in your state; the number of questions, time and fee were not shown on the ETS pages we checked.

Source: ETS — ParaPro Assessment, about the test. Checked 19 October 2026.

How much does the Praxis exam cost?

The 2026-27 Praxis Information Bulletin lists $90 for one Core test, $180 for two, $270 for three taken separately, and $150 for Core Combined (5752). Subject Assessments cost $130 for selected-response tests and $156 for tests with constructed-response questions; Speech-Language Pathology costs $146. The Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects master test costs $180, or $64 per subtest.

ETS runs a fee waiver for students on financial aid with an Expected Family Contribution of $3,000 or less; it covers up to three Core tests or one Subject Test, once per testing year.

Looking for a Praxis test promo code? On the ETS pages we checked, promotional codes applied to official ETS test prep, not to the test fee. The documented way to lower the test fee is the fee waiver. Register only through your ETS Praxis account.

Scores, passing and retakes

Most Praxis tests report a scaled score from 100 to 200. ETS does not set passing scores: each state or agency sets its own qualifying score for each test, so the same result can pass in one state and fall short in another.

If you need to retake a test, the new test date must be at least 28 days after the previous one. Score reports stay available in your ETS account for ten years from the score reporting date.

Praxis test preparation: official ETS materials

Good Praxis preparation starts with the study companion for your test code. ETS offers these study companions free; each one has a test-at-a-glance table, content categories, sample questions and answers with explanations. ETS also sells interactive practice tests, for example $24.95 per Core practice test form, plus prep eBooks and short quiz sets.

For Praxis Core test prep, ETS has a free resources page for the Core tests. Praxis test prep materials beyond that are paid. If you are comparing a Praxis test prep course or Praxis test prep classes, check that the content follows the current ETS content categories for your code; ETS itself offers self-paced courses for Elementary Education and Speech-Language Pathology.

Where to find a free Praxis practice test

ETS labels its study companions as free, and they include sample questions with explanations. That is the closest official thing to a free Praxis practice test. ETS’s full interactive practice tests are paid.

ETS did not offer a Praxis question of the day, or an SLP Praxis question of the day, on the pages we checked. For daily practice, a fixed number of questions from your own test code works just as well, as long as you review every explanation.

The ETS Praxis practice test for Praxis Core and math

The official ETS Praxis practice test for the Core is sold per subtest: a Praxis Core practice test form for Reading (5713), Writing (5723) or Math (5733) costs $24.95 on the Core Combined page. If you are looking for a Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators practice test that covers all three, you need one form per subtest.

For a math Praxis practice test, match the code first. Core Math (5733) has 56 questions in 90 minutes with a four-function calculator; the Elementary Education mathematics subtest (5003) gives you a scientific calculator in 65 minutes. Praxis math practice questions written for one of these tests may not match the content and tools of the other.

Praxis practice questions

Certsqill’s Praxis practice questions are expert-developed and organized by test and content category, from Praxis Core practice questions in reading, writing and math to subject tests such as 5001, 5003, 5205 and Speech-Language Pathology.

Every question comes with an explanation for each answer option, and your results build a readiness score per content category, so you can see what still needs work before you book. A 7-day money-back guarantee applies.
