How to get certified as a medical assistant: the steps

If you are wondering how to get medical assistant certification from AAMA, the order matters: eligibility comes from your education, so the program decision comes first. AAMA’s eligibility survey on its apply page is the starting point once you have finished, or nearly finished, your program.

  • Complete an eligible program: CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited, or one that meets the Alternative Pathway rules
  • Take AAMA’s eligibility survey and submit the online application with the fee
  • Wait for AAMA’s approval, then schedule with PSI by email invitation within your 90-day period
  • Pass the exam with a score of 405 or more on the 200 to 800 scale
  • Keep the credential current by recertifying every 60 months

Medical assistant education requirements

The education requirements for medical assistant certification through AAMA are specific. The fact sheet says the postsecondary education must include basic anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and relevant mathematics, along with the theory and technique of venipuncture and of intramuscular, subcutaneous and intradermal injections.

For the main route, the program must be accredited by CAAHEP or ABHES. A program that was accredited at any time during your enrollment counts, and so does graduating within the 36 months before the program became accredited. Medical assistant schooling requirements beyond that, such as admission criteria, are set by the program, not by AAMA.

Students and recent graduates: when you can sit the exam

Completing students and recent graduates of CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited programs may take the exam either after completing all required psychomotor and affective competencies and cognitive objectives, excluding the practicum, or no earlier than 30 days before completing all coursework, including the practicum.

Recent graduates are those who apply within 12 months of graduation. They send no documents themselves and pay $125; the program director verifies the completion dates. The credential is only awarded once that verification is in. Graduates who apply later than 12 months after graduation need an official transcript and pay $125 as AAMA members or $250 as nonmembers.

Alternative Pathway requirements for medical assistant certification

The Alternative Pathway covers graduates of postsecondary medical assisting programs and apprenticeship programs that are not CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited but meet AAMA’s criteria. The documentation review is free; the exam fee applies once you are approved.

  • Institution accredited by a body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA)
  • At least the equivalent of two semesters, with a minimum of 560 academic contact hours excluding the practicum, leading to a diploma, certificate or associate degree
  • A practicum or externship of at least 160 hours in an outpatient setting, or 1,000 hours of medical assisting experience after program completion instead
  • Anatomy and physiology, infection control, pharmacology and applied mathematics, including dosage calculations and metric conversions
  • Theory and technique of injections and phlebotomy, with at least 10 injections and at least 10 phlebotomy procedures performed successfully
  • An unofficial transcript for the first review (official transcript if approved) and a signed Attestation Form

Certified medical assistant requirements for educators and former CMAs

Medical assisting educators qualify with at least 1,000 hours in a teaching or program director role in a postsecondary program at an institution accredited by a USDE- or CHEA-recognized body. They submit an attestation form signed by their immediate supervisor and pay $125 as members or $250 as nonmembers.

Anyone who has passed the CMA (AAMA) exam before can apply again without documents by giving their certificate number and most recent certification date. On exam day, for every route, the first and last names on your ID must match AAMA and PSI records exactly.

How to get my medical assistant certification renewed

Passing is not the last requirement. CMAs (AAMA) recertify every 60 months, either with 60 continuing education units, at least 10 each in administrative, clinical and general topics and 30 from AAMA, or by passing the exam again. Current status is required to use the credential and the title Certified Medical Assistant.

What are the requirements to be a medical assistant without certification?

The requirements of medical assistant jobs and the requirements for certification are not the same thing. AAMA’s legal counsel notes that a license is required by law, while a certification is, with limited exceptions, not. Some states set their own rules: AAMA names the MA-C and MA-R licenses issued by the Washington State Department of Health as examples.

In practice, medical assistant requirements are set by your state and your employer. Check your state’s rules and the job posting; where an employer asks for the CMA (AAMA), the eligibility rules above apply.
