Medical assistant courses and training for the CMA (AAMA)

Medical assistant courses lead to the CMA (AAMA) exam only if the program qualifies: CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited, or meeting AAMA’s Alternative Pathway rules. Accredited programs can be taught online, but every student still completes an on-ground practicum of at least 160 hours, and Alternative Pathway programs must cover at least 560 contact hours plus the practicum.

Accredited certified medical assistant programs

For the main CMA (AAMA) route, accredited certified medical assistant programs means programs accredited by CAAHEP or ABHES. CAAHEP describes its role as reviewing individual education programs to make sure they meet the standards of the profession, and it offers a search for accredited programs on its student page.

Under the policies for CAAHEP-accredited medical assisting programs, students must achieve all psychomotor and affective competencies and complete a practicum of at least 160 hours, where they practice clinical and administrative skills. The main campus grants the associate degree, diploma or certificate.

Online medical assistant certificate programs

Online medical assistant certificate programs can be accredited. A CAAHEP distance education program lets students complete the entire curriculum through distance education, including the teaching and assessment of the competencies, but students must be placed in an on-ground practicum. Hybrid programs combine on-ground and distance instruction.

So an online course alone is not enough. When you compare online options, ask where and how the practicum is arranged and confirm the program’s accreditation through CAAHEP or ABHES.

How long is a medical assistant course?

CAAHEP and AAMA do not publish a standard length for accredited programs on the pages checked; each school sets its schedule. The clearest official minimum is AAMA’s Alternative Pathway: the program must be at least the equivalent of two semesters with at least 560 academic contact hours, excluding the practicum, plus a practicum of at least 160 hours in an outpatient setting.

If you are asking how long is medical assistant course work for a program that is neither accredited nor meets those minimums, the answer for CMA (AAMA) purposes is that it will not make you eligible, however long it takes.

Medical assistant classes for certification: what they cover

Classes for medical assistant certification should line up with what the exam tests. AAMA’s content outline groups the exam into clinical competency, general and administrative content. Good medical assistant certification courses cover each area, and courses for medical assistant students in accredited programs must teach and assess all required cognitive objectives and competencies.

  • Clinical: clinical workflow from patient intake to discharge, safety and infection control, procedures and examinations, pharmacology
  • General: legal and ethical issues, communication
  • Administrative: billing, coding and insurance, scheduling appointments and health information management

Clinical and administrative medical assistant classes

Some medical assistant classes focus on one side of the job. Administrative medical assistant classes and administrative medical assistant courses cover office work such as scheduling, records and billing; NHA’s Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) is an example of an administrative-only credential. Certified clinical medical assistant training relates to a different credential again: NHA’s Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA).

For the CMA (AAMA), a program has to cover both sides plus the general content, including injections and phlebotomy, and meet the accreditation or Alternative Pathway rules.

Free medical assistant courses

AAMA, CAAHEP and ABHES do not list free medical assistant courses on the pages checked. What AAMA does provide free is practice material: 50 questions each in anatomy and physiology and in medical terminology. If you find free classes for medical assistant training, check whether the program is accredited; a course that does not meet AAMA’s rules does not make you eligible for the CMA (AAMA), even if it costs nothing.

Continuing education classes for medical assistant recertification

After you pass, continuing education classes for medical assistant recertification keep the CMA (AAMA) current. You need 60 CEUs every 60 months, at least 10 each in administrative, clinical and general topics, and 30 of them must be AAMA CEUs. AAMA’s e-Learning Center sells, for example, the CMA (AAMA) Review Exam, which carries one general, one administrative and one clinical CEU.

Emergency medical assistant course: a different field

If you searched for an emergency medical assistant course, note that the CMA (AAMA) is a credential for medical assistants, who according to AAMA work alongside physicians mainly in outpatient or ambulatory care facilities. An emergency medical assistant course is not one of the eligibility routes AAMA lists for the CMA (AAMA).

Once you are in an eligible program, practise exam-style questions per content area. Certsqill’s CMA (AAMA) question bank has expert-developed questions, an explanation for every answer option and a readiness score per exam category.
