Certified Treasury Professional (CTP): cost, exam and requirements
The Certified Treasury Professional (CTP) is the treasury credential of AFP, the Association for Financial Professionals. You sit one exam of 170 multiple-choice questions (150 scored) in three and a half hours at a Pearson testing centre, and you pass with a scaled score of 300 on a 200–500 scale. Applying costs US$925–1,025 for AFP members and US$1,320–1,420 for non-members, depending on the deadline. To hold the credential you need two years of full-time treasury or corporate finance experience and 36 continuing education credits every three years.

What is a Certified Treasury Professional?
A CTP (Certified Treasury Professional) is someone who has passed AFP’s CTP exam and documented at least two years of full-time work in corporate cash and treasury management or corporate finance. AFP describes the CTP as recognised worldwide as the leading credential for treasury and finance professionals, demonstrating mastery in cash management, corporate finance and treasury operations.
The certified treasury professional designation is not tied to one country’s rules. The exam is built on AFP’s Essentials of Treasury Management body of knowledge and on test specifications written by treasury and finance practitioners, which AFP updates every three years.
In everyday terms, the Certified Treasury Professional certification signals that you understand how a company keeps enough cash to meet its obligations, funds itself over the long term, manages its banks and other relationships, controls financial and operational risk, and uses treasury technology.

How much does the CTP certification cost?
AFP charges one application fee that covers the exam, and the amount depends on your membership status and how early you apply. All fees are in US dollars and AFP notes they are subject to change.
So the certified treasury professional cost for a first attempt is between US$825 and US$1,420. The non-member fee is higher, but AFP states that it includes one year of membership. If you need another attempt, re-examination costs US$250, and missing your appointment without notice costs a US$95 no-show penalty.
Study materials are a separate line in your CTP certification cost: AFP lists the Essentials of Treasury Management (8th edition) at US$195 for members and US$295 for non-members, and its Exam Prep Platform at US$810–1,010, with US$100 off when you buy both together.
- AFP member: US$925 early, US$1,025 by the final deadline
- Corporate member: US$825 early, US$925 by the final deadline
- Non-member: US$1,320 early, US$1,420 by the final deadline (includes one year of membership)
- Re-examination or re-registration: US$250

Certified Treasury Professional requirements
AFP sets one experience rule: a minimum of two years of full-time work in a career-based corporate cash or treasury management or corporate finance position. Internships, holiday jobs and volunteer roles do not count. An advanced business degree from a graduate-level programme counts as one year of that experience; AFP asks for a transcript or copy of the graduate degree, not a bachelor’s transcript.
You can enrol and sit the exam before you meet the experience requirement, but you do not receive the credential until you do. Your application stays valid for six consecutive testing windows, so the experience has to be complete within that period. The AFP Certification Committee makes the final eligibility decision.

How to become a Certified Treasury Professional
The route has five steps, and the deadlines matter more than for most exams because the CTP runs in fixed windows rather than all year:
- Check that you have, or will have within three years, two years of qualifying full-time experience.
- Apply to AFP before the deadline for your window — the early deadline is cheaper. For the window running 1 December 2026 to 31 January 2027, the final application deadline is 28 October 2026.
- Schedule your appointment with Pearson for any day in the 60-day window.
- Pass the exam with a scaled score of 300 or more.
- Earn 36 continuing education credits in each three-year cycle to keep the credential.

The CTP exam: format, timing and passing score
The CTP is a single exam of 170 multiple-choice questions. Only 150 are scored; the other 20 are unscored pretest items that AFP is trialling, and you cannot tell which is which. Your appointment lasts four hours: three and a half hours for the questions, plus an optional 15-minute tutorial before and a short questionnaire after.
AFP reports a scaled score from 200 to 500 and sets 300 as the passing score. Because the score is scaled, AFP does not say how many questions you need to answer correctly. There is no penalty for a wrong answer, so leave nothing blank. Candidates who pass are told only that they passed; candidates who fail receive their scaled score and diagnostics by domain.
AFP administers the exam through Pearson testing centres and allows one attempt per window, with no limit on the total number of retakes. Exam dates, pass rate questions and how hard the test is are covered on the CTP exam page.

What is on the CTP exam?
AFP’s current CTP Test Specifications (published as CTP-26) group the exam into five domains with a range of questions for each. Liquidity is by far the biggest: roughly a third of the scored questions.
- Maintain corporate liquidity to meet current and future obligations — 55–60 questions
- Manage capital structure, long-term capital costs and capital investments — 33–37 questions
- Monitor and control financial, regulatory and operational risk, including emerging and reputational risk — 23–27 questions
- Assess the impact of technologies on the treasury function — 23–27 questions
- Manage internal and external relationships — 12–17 questions

Certified Treasury Professional training and courses
AFP sells its own preparation, and it is the reference point for any certified treasury professional course. The core is the Essentials of Treasury Management, which AFP calls the body of knowledge the exam is based on, and the CTP Exam Prep Platform, an online course with instructor-led videos, chapter tests, full 170-question practice exams and flashcards.
For live certified treasury professional training, AFP Learn lists a CTP Exam Intensive Review Course and a six-hour CTP Exam Bootcamp for the December 2026 – January 2027 window, and AFP points to CTP preparation classes run by regional AFP associations and conferences. Among certified treasury professional courses, check whichever you choose against the five domains of the CTP-26 specifications: material written for the older specifications may not match the current exam.
If you prefer a certified treasury professional online course you can take at your own pace, the Exam Prep Platform is AFP’s self-paced option. Study plans, practice tests and sample questions are covered in detail on the CTP study guide page.

Certified treasury professional salary and jobs
AFP states that CTP-certified professionals enjoy higher salaries, stronger job security and greater career mobility, but it attaches no CTP-specific figure to that claim on its CTP pages. Its Compensation and Benefits Survey reports that base salaries for treasury and finance professionals rose by 3.7% in 2025, and says salaries vary with education, certifications, experience, job title, region and company size.
Certsqill does not publish its own certified treasury professional salary or CTP certification salary estimates, because no official source gives one. If you are comparing certified treasury professional jobs, read what each posting actually asks for — whether the CTP is required, preferred or not mentioned — because AFP publishes no data on how many employers ask for it. Remember the two-year experience rule: AFP awards the credential only once that experience is documented.

How long is the CTP valid, and how do you renew it?
The CTP is valid for three years. To keep it, you earn 36 recertification credits in each cycle, which runs from 1 July of your exam year to 30 June of the third year, and report them online with a fee.
AFP members pay US$85 if they report by 15 August and US$135 by 15 October; non-members pay US$200 and US$250. Paper reporting costs US$25 more. Record credits as you earn them rather than at the end of the cycle.

CTP practice questions
Certsqill’s CTP practice questions are expert-developed and weighted to the five domains of the CTP-26 specifications: every question explains each answer option, and a readiness score per domain shows whether liquidity, a third of the scored exam, is ready before you study for and book a window.
