CFP certification: the CFP exam, requirements and preparation
CFP certification is the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER credential granted by CFP Board. To earn it you complete coursework through a CFP Board Registered Program and hold a bachelor’s degree, pass the 170-question CFP exam, gain 6,000 hours of experience (or 4,000 as an apprentice) and meet CFP Board’s ethics requirement. The exam is offered in March, July and November; the standard registration fee is $925, and 66% of candidates passed in July 2026.

What is a CFP certification?
The Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation is a credential for financial planners, granted and maintained by CFP Board. Many people search for it as certified financial planning (CFP) certification; the formal name is CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER certification, and holders are called CFP professionals.
Being CFP certified means you have met four requirements: education, the CFP exam, experience and ethics. CFP Board describes the ethics step as agreeing to act as a fiduciary, putting clients’ best interests first. The whole process typically takes 18 to 24 months, according to CFP Board.

CFP license or CFP certification?
People often call it a CFP license, but CFP Board calls it a certification, and CFP Board itself grants it. The CFP Board pages we checked describe certification requirements and annual certification fees, not a license.

What is on the CFP exam?
The CFP exam is a computer-based test with 170 multiple-choice questions. You get three hours for the first 85 questions and three hours for the last 85, with a 40-minute break between the two sections. The whole appointment lasts seven hours.
There are three question types: stand-alone questions of two or three sentences with four answer options, short scenarios with typically three questions each, and case studies with typically 8 to 12 questions each. The CFP test covers eight Principal Knowledge Domains:
- A. Professional Conduct and Regulation — 8%
- B. General Principles of Financial Planning — 15%
- C. Risk Management and Insurance Planning — 11%
- D. Investment Planning — 17%
- E. Tax Planning — 14%
- F. Retirement Savings and Income Planning — 18%
- G. Estate Planning — 10%
- H. Psychology of Financial Planning — 7%

How to be a CFP certified financial planner
Education comes first: you complete financial planning coursework through a CFP Board Registered Program before you can sit for the exam, and you need a bachelor’s degree in any discipline, which you can finish up to five years after passing. Then you pass the exam.
Experience can come before or after the exam: 6,000 hours of professional experience related to the financial planning process, or 4,000 hours on the apprenticeship path, completed within 10 years before and 5 years after passing. Finally you sign the Ethics Declaration and CFP Board runs a background check. The requirements page covers each step in detail.

CFP exam fees and certification costs
For the October to November 2026 exam, CFP Board charged $825 for early bird registration, $925 standard and $1,025 for late registration in the final week. After you meet all requirements, CFP Board charges a non-refundable $250 application fee and a certification fee of $575 a year, with the first year prorated.
CFP Board does not list prices for Registered Program coursework on the pages we checked, so check the program you choose. The cost page breaks down every published fee.

CFP exam dates and registration
The exam runs three times a year in 8-day testing windows in March, July and November, at Prometric test centers or by remote proctoring. CFP Board lists these upcoming windows:
- Oct. 29 to Nov. 5, 2026 (registration closed Oct. 13, 2026)
- March 16 to 23, 2027: registration opens Oct. 21, 2026; education verification deadline Feb. 23, 2027
- July 13 to 20, 2027: registration opens Feb. 17, 2027; education verification deadline June 22, 2027

CFP exam pass rate
CFP Board publishes the pass rate for every administration. In July 2026, 3,621 candidates sat the exam and 2,388 passed: an overall pass rate of 66%, with 69% for first-time takers and 57% for repeaters. In March 2026 the pass rate was 67% across a record 4,391 candidates; in November 2025 it was 64%.
The CFP exam is criterion-referenced and pass or fail. CFP Board sets a cut score through a standard-setting process but does not publish the number, so you cannot convert a percentage of correct answers into a pass.

How hard is the CFP exam?
Is the CFP exam hard? CFP Board’s own numbers give the clearest answer: about one in three candidates does not pass, even though candidates must complete their education coursework before they can sit. Repeaters pass at lower rates than first-time takers.
The difficulty comes from length and integration. Six hours of testing, case studies with up to 12 linked questions, and domains that interact: a retirement question can turn on tax rules, and an estate question on insurance. Tax questions use the tax year CFP Board publishes for each window, and the provided tax tables and formulas are available during the exam.

The CFP Board practice exam
The official CFP Board practice exam is a full-length, 170-question CFP practice exam made of retired exam questions plus some newer ones, timed at three hours per session. Practice Exam I comes with your exam registration; Practice Exam II costs $225.
The report shows your proficiency per Principal Knowledge Domain but no overall score. CFP Board reports that 69% of those who passed took a CFP Board Practice Exam during their preparation. Use it as a full-length CFP practice test under exam timing, not as your only source of questions.

CFP exam prep and CFP exam preparation
CFP Board’s advice on CFP exam preparation is consistent: you cannot cram this exam in a few weeks. Almost 80% of exam passers told CFP Board they studied 11 hours or more every week.
Official CFP exam prep materials include the Candidate Handbook, a study strategy guide, a study calendar for each window, the tax tables and formulas, and the practice exam. Review courses are optional; CFP Board lists some but does not endorse them. The study guide and training pages go deeper into both.

After you pass: keeping CFP certification
Once all four requirements are met, you pay the application and certification fees within six months. After that you pay the $575 certification fee every year and report continuing education on a two-year cycle: currently 30 hours, including a 2-hour CFP Board-approved Ethics course. CFP Board has announced an increase to 40 hours per cycle.

CFP practice questions
Certsqill’s CFP practice questions are expert-developed and mapped to CFP Board’s eight Principal Knowledge Domains, from professional conduct to the psychology of financial planning. They include stand-alone CFP exam questions as well as scenario-style CFP test questions, much like the CFP exam example questions CFP Board describes for its three question types.
Think of them as CFP practice questions and answers you learn from: every question has an explanation for each answer option, so CFP exam sample questions and CFP example questions teach the rule behind the answer, not just the letter. Your results build a readiness score per domain, so you can see where you stand before exam day. A 7-day money-back guarantee applies.
