CRISC certification: requirements, exam format and cost

What is CRISC, and what does CRISC stand for?

CRISC stands for Certified in Risk and Information Systems Control. It is ISACA’s risk certification, the one aimed at people who identify and manage enterprise IT risk rather than at auditors or security managers.

The certification covers four domains. ISACA names them Corporate IT Governance, Risk Assessment, Risk Response and Reporting, and Technology and Security. In practice, the core is that middle pair: assessing risk and then deciding and reporting what to do about it, which ISACA weights at 22 and 32 per cent of the exam.

What are the CRISC requirements and prerequisites?

The CRISC certification requirements are experience-based. ISACA requires three or more years of CRISC professional work experience across at least two of the four CRISC domains, and the exam must have been passed within the last five years when you apply.

That is the whole list — the prerequisites do not include a degree or another certification. Nor do they stop you sitting the exam: you can take it first and meet the CRISC experience requirements afterwards, as long as you apply within five years.

There is also a one-time US$50 application processing fee once your scores are released.

How much does CRISC cost?

ISACA’s CRISC page shows the exam fee with a member and a non-member rate: US$575 for ISACA members and US$760 for non-members, checked 10 October 2026.

On top of that, ISACA publishes everything around it: a one-time US$50 application processing fee, and an annual maintenance fee of US$45 for members or US$85 for non-members. Those recur for as long as you hold the credential, alongside 20 CPE hours a year.

CISA vs CRISC, CISM vs CRISC, and CGRC vs CRISC

All three ISACA credentials sit next to each other and split by job, not by level. CISA is the audit certification, CISM is the security-management one, and CRISC is risk. The CISA vs CRISC question usually resolves on what your job title says: if you test controls, CISA; if you own the risk register, CRISC.

CISM vs CRISC is closer, because both are management-facing. CISM governs an information-security programme; CRISC governs IT risk across the business, including risk that has nothing to do with security. Note the experience bar differs — CISM asks for five years, CRISC for three.

CGRC vs CRISC crosses vendors: CGRC is ISC2’s governance, risk and compliance certification, with its own authorisation-focused scope. CRISC vs CISSP is a wider gap again — CISSP is a broad security credential from ISC2 with a five-year requirement, not a risk specialisation.

What is on the CRISC exam?

ISACA states the exam as 150 questions covering the four job practice domains. The weighting is published: Governance 26 per cent, Risk Assessment 22 per cent, Risk Response and Reporting 32 per cent, Technology and Security 20 per cent.

The exam duration and the CRISC passing score are in ISACA’s Exam Candidate Guide (version 1.26), not on the certification page itself: CRISC runs 4 hours (240 minutes) with 150 multiple-choice questions, and “candidates must receive a score of 450 or higher to pass the exam” on ISACA’s 200-to-800 scale.

CRISC study guide, books and courses

ISACA publishes the exam content outline itself, and that outline is the scope any CRISC study guide has to follow. ISACA also sells CRISC courses — group training and self-paced — plus a CRISC Questions, Answers and Explanations database with 833 items as a six-month subscription.

Worth knowing before you buy third-party CRISC books or study material: because 450 is a scaled score, not a percentage of questions answered correctly, no book and no practice percentage can tell you exactly where the line is. Use the domain weighting instead — a third of the exam sits in Risk Response and Reporting.

ISACA’s CRISC certification page now shows the exam price directly: US$575.00 for ISACA members and US$760.00 for non-members, as checked on 9 October 2026. So the cost of the CRISC exam depends mainly on whether you hold an ISACA membership.

CRISC certification prerequisites: the details that trip people up

The headline requirement — three or more years of CRISC work experience across at least two of the four domains — is shown above. ISACA’s “Get CRISC certified” page adds two conditions worth checking before you apply:

• The work experience must have been gained within the 10-year period preceding your application.
• You must apply for certification within five years of passing the exam.
• After certification, you report a minimum of 120 CPE hours over each three-year reporting period.

What is CRISC certification good for in practice?

A CRISC cert says you can run the risk side of IT: identify risk, assess it, decide on a response, and report it to the people who own it. It is the ISACA credential that fits risk managers, IT risk analysts and control owners — people who own the risk register rather than audit it.

The full name, Certified in Risk and Information Systems Control (CRISC), already describes the scope: risk, and the information systems controls that treat it.

The CRISC syllabus: start with the exam content outline

ISACA does not call it a syllabus. The equivalent is the CRISC exam content outline, with the four domains and their weightings listed higher up this page. Every study plan should be built against it, because it is the only document that defines what the exam covers.

ISACA CRISC training and study materials

ISACA’s own CRISC certification training on the certification page is the CRISC Online Review Course, which is self-paced. ISACA also mentions group training for teams. For CRISC study materials, ISACA offers the CRISC Review Manual, 8th edition, in digital and print, and the CRISC Questions, Answers & Explanations Database as a six-month subscription.

If you are choosing between options, the review manual and the outline cover the scope; the online course adds structure; the question database adds exam-style practice. You do not need all three — pick what fills the gap you actually have.

Choosing a CRISC bootcamp

ISACA’s CRISC page does not list a bootcamp format of its own. If you are considering a CRISC boot camp from a training provider, check that it follows the current exam content outline domain by domain, that it uses or includes ISACA’s official materials, and whether the exam registration is included or extra.

A bootcamp suits candidates who already have the three years of risk experience and need to translate it into ISACA’s vocabulary. It does not replace that experience, which you need for certification anyway.

ISACA publishes no free set of CRISC sample questions on the certification page; its exam-style CRISC test questions come in the paid Questions, Answers & Explanations Database. When you look for sample CRISC questions elsewhere, judge them by the explanations: a good question explains why each wrong option is wrong in risk terms, not just which letter is right.

CRISC salary: why we do not quote a number

ISACA’s CRISC page shows a headline average-salary figure, but it does not state the source, sample or method behind it. Without that, we do not repeat it as a CRISC salary or CRISC certification salary figure here.

Is CRISC worth it? It is worth it if risk is your job or the job you want, and you already have — or will soon have — the three years of experience needed to be certified. The exam alone does not make you certified; the experience does.
