Fortinet NSE 4 certification: exam, cost and training

What is the NSE 4 certification?

NSE 4 FortiOS is Fortinet’s certification for people who run FortiGate firewalls day to day. Fortinet says it validates your ability to configure, operate and administer FortiGate devices, and aims it at network and security professionals who need the expertise to configure and administer firewall solutions.

There is one requirement: pass the NSE 4 FortiOS proctored exam. The exam currently available is Fortinet NSE 4 - FortiOS 7.6 Administrator, built on FortiOS 7.6.0. Passing it gives you the NSE 4 certification, which stays active for two years from the date of the exam.

What changed in the Fortinet certification program in July 2026?

Fortinet restructured its certification programme with effect from 15 July 2026, moving from five certification levels to eight across four tracks: Secure Networking, Security Operations, Cloud Security and SASE. NSE 4 FortiOS is the level-4 certification in that structure.

If you held a certification from the previous programme, Fortinet states that existing certifications remain valid until their expiration date, and that holders of the earlier professional-level certifications are awarded NSE 4, 5 or 6 based on Fortinet’s 15 July mapping. Only active certifications are carried over, so check your own record on the Fortinet Training Institute portal.

One more change to watch: the exam page lists a Fortinet NSE 4 - FortiOS 8.0 Administrator exam as coming soon, without a date. Until it goes live, the FortiOS 7.6 exam is the one you book.

How much does the Fortinet NSE 4 exam cost?

Fortinet lists NSE 4 to NSE 6 exams at US$200, tax not included. Its helpdesk notes that this price stays unchanged when NSE 7 and new industry certification exams move to US$400 on 2 November 2026.

You book and pay through Pearson VUE. If your employer or a training partner gives you a Pearson VUE exam voucher, note Fortinet’s rule that Pearson VUE vouchers cannot be used for recertification assessments, and recertification assessment vouchers cannot be used for Pearson VUE exams.

A failed attempt means paying again: Fortinet requires a 15-day wait after a failed attempt before you retake. You cannot retake an exam you have already passed.

NSE 4 exam format: questions, time and passing score

The Fortinet NSE 4 - FortiOS 7.6 Administrator exam has 50–55 questions in 100 minutes, in English and Japanese. Questions are multiple choice and drag-and-drop, and Fortinet states that answers must be 100% correct to receive credit — there is no partial credit on a multi-part question.

Fortinet does not publish a passing score. The exam page says only that the result is pass or fail, with a score report available from your Pearson VUE account.

You can take the test at a Pearson VUE test centre or online through OnVUE. The upcoming FortiOS 8.0 version is listed with 50–60 questions in 100 minutes, in English.

What is on the NSE 4 FortiOS exam?

Fortinet publishes five topic areas with weightings for the FortiOS 7.6 exam. Content inspection is the largest single block — encrypted traffic inspection with certificates, web filtering, application control, antivirus and IPS — so it deserves more study time than its place in the list suggests.

Deployment covers initial configuration, logging, FGCP high-availability clusters, diagnostics, FortiGate in the public cloud and FortiSASE onboarding. Firewall policies includes SNAT and DNAT, firewall authentication methods and Fortinet Single Sign-On. Routing covers static routes and SD-WAN, and the VPN area asks you to implement a meshed or partially redundant IPsec VPN.

Fortinet NSE 4 training and course options

Fortinet recommends taking the associated NSE course before the exam. For the current exam that is the FortiOS 7.6 Administrator course with its hands-on labs; the Fortinet Training Institute library now also lists FortiOS 8.0 Administrator Self-Paced, updated in September 2026, for the upcoming exam version.

The self-paced courses include interactive labs on firewall policies, user authentication and high availability. Fortinet Authorized Training Centers also deliver Fortinet courses; the library page does not show course prices or durations, so check those when you enrol.

For study, Fortinet points to its own documentation as well: the FortiOS 7.6.0 Administration Guide and New Features guide, plus the FortiSASE and public cloud guides that match the deployment objectives.

NSE 4 prerequisites and recommended experience

Fortinet’s recertification policy lists no renewal prerequisites for NSE 4, and the NSE 4 page names only one requirement: passing the proctored exam. You do not need a lower-level NSE certification first.

The exam page does describe the candidate Fortinet has in mind: one to two years of networking experience, up to a year of network security experience, and at least six months of hands-on experience with FortiGate. Treat the last point seriously — the objectives are about configuring and diagnosing real devices.

How long is NSE 4 valid and how do you recertify?

NSE 4 is active for two years from the date of the exam. Fortinet’s recertification policy gives two routes: pass the proctored exam again, or complete a recertification assessment when one is available for a later exam version.

The assessment route has conditions: your certification must not have expired, you must have passed a prior version of the exam at Pearson VUE less than two years ago, and the assessment must be for a higher version than the exam you passed. NSE 4 to 6 recertification assessments cost US$200.

NSE 4 dumps and exam misconduct

Fortinet’s candidate misconduct policy lists using prior knowledge of test content, using unauthorised test aids, and disclosure or discussion of test content as misconduct. NSE 4 dump files are exactly that kind of prior knowledge of test content.

The sanctions are concrete: Fortinet may rescind exam scores, revoke certifications and restrict participation in its programmes, and misconduct can lead to programme suspensions of three to twelve months. Studying the objectives and practising on a FortiGate is the way to pass that does not put the certification at risk.

Is the NSE 4 certification worth it?

That depends on how much FortiGate you touch. NSE 4 is a product-specific certification: it proves you can deploy, secure and troubleshoot FortiGate firewalls, which is directly useful if your organisation or your customers run Fortinet, and less so if they do not.

Fortinet does not publish salary figures for NSE 4 holders, so this page does not quote any. What Fortinet does publish is the cost side — US$200 per attempt and a two-year validity — which you can weigh against how central FortiGate is to the role you want.
