Fortinet NSE 5 Secure Networking certification: exams and cost
NSE 5 in Secure Networking is one of Fortinet’s new level-5 certifications, introduced when the NSE program moved to eight levels on July 15, 2026. You need NSE 4 FortiOS and must pass one of three proctored exams — FortiSwitch, Secure Wireless LAN or SD-WAN Core Administrator — at $200 each. Exams run 60 to 70 minutes at Pearson VUE or online, and the certification is valid for two years.

What is the Fortinet NSE 5 Secure Networking cert?
NSE 5 in Secure Networking validates your ability to deploy, manage and monitor Fortinet core network security products. It sits on level 5 of Fortinet’s NSE program, directly above NSE 4 FortiOS, in the Secure Networking track — one of four tracks next to SASE, Cloud Security and Security Operations.
NSE 5 Secure Networking lets you specialise: you choose one exam on switching, wireless or SD-WAN. The certification is the same whichever of the three you pass.

NSE 5 after the July 2026 program change
Effective July 15, 2026, Fortinet moved its certification program from five levels to eight. If you knew “NSE 5” from before, the content has changed: the FortiManager and FortiNAC Administrator exams moved to NSE 6, and the NSE 5 FortiSandbox Administrator exam was retired, with its course moved to Fortinet’s other technical training.
For people who already held an active FCP in Secure Networking on July 15, 2026, Fortinet’s transition examples show NSE 5 in Secure Networking being awarded on the basis of a passed FortiSwitch Administrator or Secure Wireless LAN Administrator exam. Existing certifications stay valid until their expiry, and only active certifications are renewed.

NSE 5 Secure Networking exam options
You pass one of three proctored exams. All are pass or fail, with multiple-choice and drag-and-drop questions, and the score report is available from your Pearson VUE account.
One inconsistency to know: the NSE 5 certification page still says the SD-WAN exam “will be available in Q3 2026”, while the SD-WAN exam page itself shows the status “Available”. Check the exam page when you book.

What is on the NSE 5 exams?
FortiSwitch Administrator covers FortiSwitch concepts (VLANs, QoS and LLDP-MED, stacking, switching and routing, STP), deployment and management including multi-tenancy, Layer 2 control and security (port security, antispoofing, ACLs) and monitoring and troubleshooting, including FortiLink issues.
Secure Wireless LAN Administrator covers wireless fundamentals and FortiAP management, wireless network security and access, wireless monitoring and protection, and wireless diagnostics and analytics.
SD-WAN Core Administrator is the only one with published weightings: SD-WAN architecture and concepts 15–25%, traffic control, rules and routing 35–45%, and centralised management, visibility and troubleshooting 35–45%.

How much does the NSE 5 exam cost?
Fortinet lists NSE 4 to 6 exams at $200 each, in US dollars and excluding tax. That price stays the same after Fortinet’s November 2, 2026 price change, which raises NSE 7 exams but not NSE 4 to 6.
Because NSE 4 FortiOS is a prerequisite, budget for that exam too if you do not hold it yet. Recertification assessments for NSE 4 to 6 are also listed at $200. Note that vouchers bought for Pearson VUE exams cannot be used for recertification assessments, and the other way round.

NSE 5 exam scoring and passing
Fortinet does not publish a passing score; results are simply pass or fail. What it does publish is strict: answers must be 100% correct to receive credit, there is no partial credit, and there are no deductions for incorrect answers.
So on a multi-select or drag-and-drop item, three correct choices out of four score nothing. Since wrong answers cost nothing extra, never leave a question blank.

Prerequisites and recommended experience
You must hold the NSE 4 FortiOS certification and pass one NSE 5 Secure Networking exam within two years. Renewing NSE 5 later also requires an active NSE 4.
The exam pages add recommended experience. For FortiSwitch, Fortinet recommends at least six months of hands-on experience with FortiSwitch devices in a network. For Secure Wireless LAN, it recommends two years of network security experience, one year with wireless networks, one year with FortiGate and its integrated wireless controller, and one year with FortiEdge Cloud management.

NSE 5 training courses
Fortinet recommends taking the associated NSE course before the exam. Each exam has a matching course with hands-on labs: FortiSwitch 7.6 Administrator, Secure Wireless LAN 7.6 Administrator and SD-WAN 7.6 Core Administrator, all in the Fortinet Training Institute library.
Match the course to the exam version. The current exams are on the 7.6 releases, so studying older material risks gaps in features and menus.

NSE 5 exam dumps and Fortinet’s misconduct policy
Fortinet’s misconduct policy names “using prior knowledge of test content”, using unauthorised test aids, and disclosing or discussing test content as misconduct. That covers what exam dumps are: leaked test content.
Fortinet may rescind exam scores, revoke certifications and restrict participation in its programs, and misconduct may lead to program suspensions of three to twelve months.

Retakes, validity and recertification
If you fail, you must wait 15 days before retaking; you cannot retake an exam you have already passed. The certification is valid for two years from the date the most recent requirement is completed.
While it is still active, you can extend it by two years by passing an NSE 5 Secure Networking exam, by completing the online recertification assessment where eligible, by achieving or renewing NSE 7 in Secure Networking, or by passing an NSE 8 practical exam if you hold NSE 7 in Secure Networking. Once it has expired, you have to meet the initial requirements again.
