FE exam study guide: how to study for the FE exam

The best FE exam study guide is built from two NCEES documents: the exam specification for your discipline, which lists every knowledge area with a range of questions, and the NCEES reference handbook, which is the only reference you get on screen. Study the areas in proportion to their weight, practise every formula lookup in the handbook, and finish with timed practice exams.

FE exam study materials that matter most

Three kinds of FE exam study materials come straight from NCEES. The specification for your discipline tells you what is tested. The reference handbook, which you can open from the dashboard of your MyNCEES account, is the same document you will search on screen during the exam. The interactive practice exams (two volumes per discipline, US$50 each) show the question style and include a timed mode.

Everything else, from FE exam prep books to video lessons, is a supplement. Use it when it helps you understand a knowledge area, and check that it follows the current specification and handbook edition.

Is there an NCEES FE exam study guide?

NCEES does not publish a document called an NCEES FE exam study guide on the pages we checked. Its exam specifications and reference handbook do the job of an official study guide for the FE exam: the first defines the content, the second the formulas and tables you may use.

The exam is closed book with an electronic reference, and the Ctrl + F shortcut is not available in the on-screen handbook. Studying for the FE exam therefore includes learning the structure of the handbook well enough to find a formula in seconds.

How to study for the FE exam in five steps

If you are wondering how to study for FE exam content efficiently, work from the specification outward rather than from a textbook inward:

  • Download the specification for your discipline and mark each knowledge area as strong, medium or weak.
  • Study the weak areas with the most questions first; they move your result most.
  • Solve every practice problem with the NCEES reference handbook open, never from memory.
  • Use one NCEES-approved calculator for all practice, the model you will bring.
  • Finish with full timed practice: 110 questions in 5 hours 20 minutes, with no individually timed sections.

FE exam study guide civil: what to weight

The FE Civil specification we read on ncees.org lists 18 knowledge areas for 110 questions. It is dated effective January 2014, so confirm the current version in MyNCEES before you build your plan. In that document geotechnical engineering has the widest range (9 to 14 questions), followed by hydraulics and hydrologic systems and transportation engineering (8 to 12 each).

Mathematics, statics and mechanics of materials have 7 to 11 each; structural analysis, structural design and environmental engineering 6 to 9 each. The smaller areas, such as surveying, construction and engineering economics, are worth 4 to 6 questions each and are often quick wins.

Mechanical: where the questions are

The FE Mechanical specification (effective July 2020) concentrates its weight in six areas: dynamics, kinematics and vibrations; fluid mechanics; thermodynamics; and mechanical design and analysis carry 10 to 15 questions each, and statics and mechanics of materials 9 to 14 each. A mechanical study plan that skimps on thermal and fluids topics leaves a large share of the exam uncovered.

An FE exam study plan, schedule and calendar

NCEES does not publish a recommended study time, so how long to study for the FE exam depends on how recently you covered the material. The FE exam study schedule below is our own example for a candidate who works full time, not an NCEES rule. Turn it into an FE exam study calendar by putting each week on fixed days.

  • Weeks 1 to 2: mathematics, probability and statistics, engineering economics, ethics. Learn the handbook layout.
  • Weeks 3 to 8: the heaviest discipline areas, one or two per week, with handbook-based practice problems.
  • Weeks 9 to 10: the smaller areas and your weakest topics from earlier weeks.
  • Weeks 11 to 12: two full timed practice exams, then targeted review of what you missed.

How long to study for FE exam success if you are out of school

There is no official answer. As a planning rule, add time for every knowledge area you rated weak and for every year since you last used it. If your first timed practice exam shows clear gaps across many areas, extend the plan rather than scheduling the test anyway: NCEES allows one attempt per testing window and no more than three in 12 months.

FE Exam study guide: questions people ask

What is the best study guide for FE exam preparation?

Start with the NCEES specification for your discipline and the NCEES reference handbook in your MyNCEES account; add practice exams and books as supplements.

How long to study for the FE exam?

NCEES does not publish a recommended study time. Base it on how many knowledge areas you rate weak; the 12-week plan above is our own example.

Do I need FE exam prep books?

They are optional. The exam is closed book with an electronic reference, and the NCEES reference handbook is the only reference available on screen.

How do I study for the FE exam with the handbook?

Solve every practice problem with the handbook open, because Ctrl + F is not available in the exam and you need to know where formulas are. Source: NCEES Examinee Guide, checked 19 October 2026.

Can I study for FE exam topics in any order?

Yes, but start with the weak areas that carry the most questions in your discipline’s specification.
