SIE exam study guide: what to study and how

The best SIE exam study guide starts with FINRA’s own content outline, because it lists every topic and how many of the 75 scored questions each section carries. FINRA adds free study materials (a practice test, a quick reference guide and an exam tutorial), does not endorse any vendor’s books, and gives no official study-time recommendation.

The FINRA SIE exam study guide is the content outline

FINRA does not publish a book. Its FINRA SIE exam study guide in practice is the content outline PDF, which names the topics in each section and their weight. Use it as the table of contents for everything else you read.

  • Section 1, Knowledge of Capital Markets (12 questions): regulatory entities, agencies and market participants; market structure; economic factors; offerings
  • Section 2, Understanding Products and Their Risks (33 questions): products; investment risks
  • Section 3, Understanding Trading, Customer Accounts and Prohibited Activities (23 questions): trading, settlement and corporate actions; customer accounts and compliance considerations; prohibited activities
  • Section 4, Overview of the Regulatory Framework (7 questions): SRO regulatory requirements for associated persons; employee conduct and reportable events

Free FINRA SIE exam study materials

FINRA’s student page lists four free FINRA SIE exam study materials: the content outline, the SIE Quick Reference Guide, an exam tutorial video and the practice test. The practice test has 75 questions, is not timed and ends with feedback on what you need to review.

These are the only securities industry essentials SIE exam study material that comes from FINRA itself. Everything else, from SIE exam books to flashcards, is created by test providers, and FINRA states that it does not endorse any particular vendor’s materials.

How to study for the SIE exam

Weight your time by the outline. Products and their risks is 33 of 75 scored questions, and trading, accounts and prohibited activities another 23. Together they are three quarters of your score. That is how to study for SIE exam sections with the most weight: go deep there first, then cover capital markets and the regulatory framework.

You cannot bring reference materials into the exam, so studying for SIE exam day means recall without notes. Practice answering from memory, and when you miss a question, write down the rule behind it rather than the answer.

An SIE exam study plan around the 120-day window

Once you enroll, FINRA gives you 120 days to take the exam. A practical SIE exam study plan therefore starts before you enroll, or at least fixes your test date early in the window. The plan below is our own suggestion, not a FINRA recommendation:

  • Step 1: take FINRA’s free practice test cold as a baseline and note your weakest section.
  • Step 2: work through the outline section by section, starting with products and their risks.
  • Step 3: switch to timed practice at the real pace of 85 items in 1 hour 45 minutes.
  • Step 4: book your appointment once your weakest section is no longer a gap.

How long to study for SIE exam readiness

FINRA does not say how long to study for SIE exam readiness, and any number of hours you see quoted is not an official figure. Your background decides it: someone who already works with securities needs less time on products than a student meeting most of these investment products for the first time.

A better question than hours is evidence. If you consistently pass timed, outline-based practice in every section, you are ready; if one section keeps failing, you are not, however long you have studied.

SIE exam prep books and flashcards

SIE exam prep books and SIE exam flashcards can help, but check them against FINRA’s current content outline before you buy. FINRA does not endorse any vendor, so the outline is your only neutral test of coverage. Flashcards suit definitions and rules; scenario questions on accounts and prohibited activities need practice questions with explanations.

Use one main resource and one source of practice questions. Several overlapping SIE exam books mostly add reading time, not readiness.
