What is the SIE exam?
The FINRA SIE exam assesses a candidate’s basic knowledge of the securities industry: capital markets, investment products and their risks, trading and customer accounts, prohibited activities and the regulatory framework. FINRA opened it to anyone aged 18 or older. You do not need to be associated with a broker-dealer, you do not need to be a U.S. citizen, and you may take it before you have a job offer.
The SIE is not a license on its own. FINRA states that the SIE does not have a registration category, and passing it alone does not qualify you to register with a member firm. To become a registered representative you pass the SIE together with a qualification exam for your type of business, such as the Series 7, and you need to be associated with a member firm to take that qualification exam. So when people call it the SIE license exam, they mean the first of two steps.

SIE exam breakdown: format and sections
Each candidate sees 85 multiple-choice items with four answer choices each: 75 scored and 10 unscored. The unscored items look like all the others, so treat every question as if it counts. You have 1 hour and 45 minutes, and you may not bring reference materials.
FINRA’s content outline splits the 75 scored questions into four sections. Products and their risks is the largest at 44%, followed by trading, customer accounts and prohibited activities at 31%.
- Knowledge of Capital Markets: 16% (12 questions)
- Understanding Products and Their Risks: 44% (33 questions)
- Understanding Trading, Customer Accounts and Prohibited Activities: 31% (23 questions)
- Overview of the Regulatory Framework: 9% (7 questions)

How much does the SIE exam cost?
The SIE exam cost is $100, paid by credit card or ACH when you enroll, or covered by a voucher from a firm or other organization. That answers how much is the SIE exam for a first attempt; each retake needs a new, paid enrollment.
Late changes cost extra. Rescheduling or cancelling a test center appointment within 3 to 10 business days costs $50 for the SIE; within 2 business days, or if you do not show up, you lose the full $100.

SIE exam sign up: create an account, enroll, schedule
The SIE exam sign up has three steps on FINRA’s side: create an account, enroll for the SIE and pay (or redeem a voucher), then schedule your appointment. Once you are enrolled, FINRA opens a 120-day window in which you must take the exam. Book early, because appointment availability varies by test center location.

How to take the SIE exam
Where to take SIE exam appointments is your choice: at a Prometric test center or online with a remote proctor. FINRA makes online delivery of the SIE available to any candidate with an open enrollment window.
At a test center you bring one valid, government-issued ID with a signature and picture, and Prometric provides a four-function calculator and an erasable note board. Online, you get an onscreen calculator and a virtual notepad instead, and no personal items or reference materials are allowed in either setting.

Scoring and retakes
Scores are placed on a common scale through equating, and the passing score is 70 on a scale of 0 to 100. You see your pass/fail status immediately, with performance feedback if you fail.
If you fail, the current waiting period is 30 days after the first and second failed attempts and 180 days after the third and any later one. FINRA has approved shorter waits of 15 and 60 calendar days in Regulatory Notice 26-18, effective January 19, 2027. The waiting period applies only to the exam you failed.

How hard is the SIE exam?
FINRA does not publish a pass rate on the pages we checked, so any figure you see elsewhere is not a FINRA number. What FINRA does publish shows where the SIE gets difficult: a scaled passing score of 70, roughly 74 seconds per item across 85 items, and a products section worth 44% that covers a wide range of securities and their risks.
Is the SIE exam hard for you? That depends on your starting point. The honest answer to how hard is SIE exam preparation for a finance student versus a career changer is very different, which is why measuring yourself per section matters more than general opinions.

Where to find a free SIE practice exam
FINRA offers a free SIE practice exam on its website: the FINRA SIE exam practice test. In short, FINRA’s SIE practice exam: 75 questions, multiple choice, not timed, with feedback at the end on what you know and what to review. FINRA says the questions are examples of the types that appear on the actual exam, but your result should not be taken as an absolute prediction of your real score.
FINRA’s practice test is an online test; the pages we checked do not offer an SIE practice exam PDF. The content outline itself is a free PDF, and together with the SIE Quick Reference Guide and FINRA’s exam tutorial it is the most reliable free SIE exam prep available.

Choosing SIE exam prep materials
FINRA does not endorse any vendor’s materials, but notes that a number of test providers have created them. When you compare an SIE exam prep course or book, check that it follows FINRA’s current content outline section by section, that it includes timed practice at the real pace, and that it explains why each wrong answer is wrong.
The best SIE exam prep course or book is the one that shows you which of the four sections still costs you points. Good FINRA SIE exam prep starts with the outline. A securities industry essentials SIE exam prep plan then adds the free FINRA practice test as a baseline and uses exam-style questions to close gaps before you book.
