What is the GCLD certification?
GCLD stands for GIAC Cloud Security Essentials. GIAC says the certification validates a practitioner’s knowledge and skills across the full picture of cloud security: preventive, detective and reactive techniques for defending workloads that run in a cloud service provider’s environment.
The audience GIAC names is wide on purpose. Security engineers, analysts, managers and auditors are on the list, as are system administrators, risk managers and anyone responsible for securing cloud environments. That breadth is the point of an essentials credential: it covers identity, networking, data, logging, automation and incident response at a level everyone in a cloud security team should share.
GIAC shows no retirement or “In Abeyance” notice for GCLD; its pricing page marks five other certifications that way, not this one. As of 14 October 2026 the GCLD cert is an active, bookable GIAC certification.

How much does the GCLD certification cost?
A standalone GCLD certification attempt costs $999. GIAC lists its prices in USD and states that they exclude applicable sales tax.
The other figures GIAC publishes for GCLD are worth planning for: an exam retake is $899, an attempt extension is $479, and an official practice exam is $399. Miss a proctored appointment and you pay a $175 reseating fee, which comes with a seven-day extension from your current deadline.
Many candidates buy the attempt together with SANS training instead. GIAC does not print the price of such a bundle on its pricing page, so the binding figure is the one shown when you register.

GCLD exam format
The GCLD exam is one proctored exam with 75 questions and a two-hour time limit. GIAC offers two proctoring options: remote proctoring through ProctorU, or onsite proctoring at a Pearson VUE testing center.
After a standalone attempt is activated you have 120 days to sit the exam. Treat that as the deadline for your study plan and book the slot early rather than in the last week of the window.
Like every GIAC exam, GCLD is open book but not open internet or open computer. You may bring printed books and notes into the testing area; printed material that looks like practice test or exam questions with answers is strictly prohibited. A well-organised printed index of your notes saves far more time than a large pile of paper.

GCLD passing score
GIAC has set the GCLD passing score at 61% for all candidates who receive the exam version released on or after 9 April 2021. GIAC advises checking the Certification Information section of your GIAC account to confirm the format and passing score of your own attempt.
On 75 questions, 61% is a lower bar than the 66% GIAC sets for GCSA, but the objective list is long. A topic you skip is not a few points lost; with 16 objectives and no published weighting, it can be the difference between passing and buying a $899 retake.

What is on the GCLD exam?
GIAC publishes 16 exam certification objectives for GCLD. Read together, they follow the life of a cloud workload: accounts and identities, networks, compute and containers, sensitive data and secrets, logging and network monitoring, automation and secure development, and finally compliance, attacks and incident response.
GIAC does not name specific cloud providers on the certification page — it speaks of cloud service provider environments in general — and it does not publish a weighting per objective. Treat every objective as examinable.

GCLD prerequisites
GIAC lists no formal prerequisites for GCLD. You can buy an attempt without proving experience or completing a course first.
The SANS course built for GCLD is more specific about the starting point it expects: an understanding of networking fundamentals such as IP addressing, subnets, firewalls and DNS, a working knowledge of both Linux and Windows, some prior exposure to cloud computing concepts, and foundational security principles such as encryption and authentication. If those are shaky, fix them before you start on the cloud objectives.

GCLD training: SANS SEC502
SANS, GIAC’s official training partner, maps one course to this certification: SEC502: Cloud Security Tactical Defense, which SANS says is built around the exam objectives that make up the GIAC Cloud Security Essentials (GCLD) certification. It runs five days instructor-led or 36 hours self-paced and carries 36 CPEs.
The self-paced OnDemand version lists at $8,780 USD with four months of access; prices for live events vary by location and currency. Training is optional — GIAC sells the exam attempt on its own — but it is the official route if you want structured preparation against the objectives.

How long is the GCLD certification valid?
GIAC certifications run on a four-year cycle: you collect 36 credits over four years to keep the certification active. The certification renewal fee GIAC lists for GCLD is $499, and additional renewals within two years of paying a full-price renewal cost $249.
Start logging credits early. SANS states that the CPEs from its courses can be applied to renew certifications; SEC502 itself is listed at 36 CPEs.

GCLD vs GCSA
Both are GIAC cloud certifications with 75 questions in two hours. GCLD is the broad one: identity, networks, compute, data, logging, compliance and incident response, with a 61% passing score.
GCSA, GIAC Cloud Security Automation, is narrower and closer to engineering — CI/CD pipelines, containers and Kubernetes, infrastructure as code and policy as code — and its passing score is 66%. If you are building a general cloud security foundation, GCLD fits; if you already secure delivery pipelines and container platforms, GCSA describes that work more closely.

GCLD practice tests and exam dumps
GIAC sells an official GCLD practice exam for $399. GIAC states that the bank of practice questions is limited, so the same question can appear on more than one practice test, and that practice exams never include actual exam questions.
Exam dumps are not a shortcut. GIAC’s Exam Integrity Policy names any use of or reference to exam dump sites containing actual or possible GIAC questions as a violation, with sanctions that include revocation of previously issued GIAC certifications and bans from future GIAC certifications.

GCLD practice questions
Certsqill GCLD practice questions are expert-developed for the GIAC exam. Every question comes with an explanation for every answer option, so a wrong pick teaches you why the alternative is right and why the others are not.
Your readiness score per domain shows which areas of the GCLD objectives are solid and which still need work before you activate your 120-day attempt. Access comes with a 7-day money-back guarantee.
