What is GSEC certification?
GSEC stands for GIAC Security Essentials — GIAC’s broad, practitioner-level security certification, aimed at people who need to demonstrate hands-on security skill rather than only security terminology.
What sets it apart from most entry-to-mid security exams is CyberLive. GIAC builds part of the exam around real code, real exploits and real machines, so a portion of the 106 questions is answered by doing the task rather than by picking an option.

What is the GSEC exam format and passing score?
One proctored exam, 106 questions, a time limit of four hours, and a minimum passing score of 72 per cent. GIAC prepares, administers and scores the exam itself as a standardised assessment.
Unlike the scaled scores used by ISC2 and Microsoft, 72 per cent here is a straight percentage — which makes it one of the few security certifications where a practice percentage means something directly comparable.

How much does GSEC cost?
GIAC does not publish a figure. We checked the GSEC certification page and GIAC’s get-certified pages on 24 September 2026 and neither carries a price. The fee is quoted at registration.
One thing worth knowing before you compare quotes: GIAC prices an exam attempt differently depending on whether it is bought with SANS training or on its own. That is why the numbers you find on third-party pages disagree with each other.

GSEC vs CISSP
GSEC vs CISSP is a difference of kind, not of rank. CISSP is ISC2’s management-facing credential across eight domains, scored to 700 of 1,000, with an enforced five-year experience requirement. GSEC is hands-on, percentage-scored at 72, and GIAC states no experience requirement on the certification page.
In practice GSEC is the one that proves you can do the work at a keyboard, and CISSP is the one that gets past an HR filter for a management role. They are often held together rather than chosen between.

GSEC practice questions and practice exams
Certsqill’s GSEC practice questions come with an explanation for every answer option and a readiness score per objective area.
A caution that applies to any GSEC practice material: no third-party question set can reproduce the CyberLive portion, because those tasks are performed in a live environment. A practice percentage will therefore always flatter you slightly against the real 72 per cent.

GIAC GSEC certification: what the 72% now means
GIAC has fixed the passing score of the GIAC GSEC certification at 72% for all candidates, for exam versions released on or after 6 April 2026. GIAC also tells candidates to check their own GIAC account for the format and passing score that apply to their specific attempt — so if you bought an attempt earlier, confirm there rather than relying on general information.

GSEC certification price and exam price: where to find the figure
GIAC still prints no GSEC certification price on the certification page. The “Register now” button leads to a SANS cart, where the GSEC exam price for your purchase is shown — and it depends on whether the attempt is bought with SANS training or on its own.
So when you compare offers, compare like with like: an exam attempt alone, or an attempt bundled with a course. Both are sold through the official GIAC and SANS channel.

Official GSEC practice exam
GIAC sells practice tests for GSEC through its own site. Two notes from GIAC are worth reading before you buy: the bank of practice questions is limited, and practice exams never include actual exam questions. Treat the official GSEC practice exam as a rehearsal of the format and timing, not as a preview of the content.
Because the practice bank is limited, repeating the same practice test quickly measures memory rather than readiness. Take one early to find your weak areas and save another for the end.

SANS training or a GSEC bootcamp?
GIAC states that GSEC training is available in a variety of modalities, including live training and OnDemand, through SANS. Training is not required — GIAC states no formal prerequisite — but it notes that practical work experience helps ensure you have mastered the skills.
If you are considering a bootcamp, check that it covers the hands-on CyberLive side of the exam, not only the knowledge questions. A four-hour exam with tasks in real machines rewards practice at the keyboard far more than slides.

Is the GIAC Security Essentials GSEC certification worth it?
The GIAC Security Essentials GSEC certification is worth it if you want a broad security credential that proves hands-on skill: CyberLive tasks make it harder to pass on memorised answers alone. Weigh that against the cost, which you only see at registration and which rises when the attempt is bundled with training. GIAC publishes no salary or pass-rate data, and we do not quote unofficial figures.
