What is the GPCS certification?
GPCS stands for GIAC Public Cloud Security. GIAC says it validates a practitioner’s preparedness to secure the cloud in both public and multicloud environments, and that holders understand the nuances of AWS, Azure and Google Cloud Platform.
That multicloud angle is what sets GPCS apart. Rather than testing one provider in depth, it asks you to know how identity, storage, serverless and network controls differ between the three big platforms.
GIAC names security analysts, engineers and researchers, cloud and DevOps engineers, security auditors, system administrators, operations staff, and anyone responsible for researching, evaluating or adopting cloud security offerings as the audience. GIAC lists no prerequisites.

How much does the GPCS certification cost?
GIAC’s pricing page lists a standalone GPCS certification attempt at US$999. A retake costs US$899, an attempt extension US$479, the renewal US$499 and an official practice exam US$399. GIAC sells no demo questions for GPCS.
Two smaller fees are worth knowing: a missed proctored appointment costs a US$175 reseating fee, and additional renewals within two years of paying a full-price renewal cost US$249. All prices are in US dollars and exclude sales tax.
For training, SANS lists the OnDemand version of SEC510 at US$8,780.

GPCS exam format and passing score
The GPCS exam is one proctored exam: 75 questions with a 2-hour time limit, which leaves about a minute and a half per question.
GIAC has set the passing score at 64% for all candidates who receive the exam version released on or after 16 August 2021, based on a psychometric standard-setting study. GIAC asks candidates to check their GIAC account for the format and passing score that apply to their own attempt.
GIAC offers two proctoring options for its exams — remotely with ProctorU or onsite at a Pearson VUE test center — and notes that both may not be available for every attempt. A standalone attempt gives you 120 days from activation to sit the exam.

Is the GPCS exam open book?
GIAC exams are open book format: printed books and printed or handwritten notes are allowed. They are not open internet or open computer, so you cannot open a cloud console, documentation site or local file during the exam.
For a three-cloud exam that rule shapes preparation. A printed comparison table — how each provider handles IAM policies, key management, storage access and instance metadata — is worth more than the full documentation of any single cloud.

What is on the GPCS exam?
GIAC publishes eight exam certification objectives for GPCS, without weightings. Two details stand out: AI services are named explicitly in the application-platform and storage objectives, and instance metadata APIs appear as a credential-attack topic in their own right.
- Accessing Cloud Services Securely — private service endpoints, secure network configuration, remote administrative access
- Cloud Data Protection — key management, security controls, encryption of sensitive data
- Cloud Identity and Access Management — IAM security concerns and securing IAM policies
- Cloud Integration and Benchmarking — auditing against benchmarks, long-term credentials, end-user identity and single sign-on
- Multicloud and Credential Management Fundamentals — current public cloud concerns, instance metadata APIs and credential attacks
- Securing Cloud Application Service Platforms — cloud application services, including AI services
- Securing Cloud Storage Platforms — cloud storage, including AI-specific storage, and data exfiltration risks
- Securing Serverless Functions — serverless misconfigurations and persistence attacks

GPCS training: SANS SEC510
GIAC links GPCS to SANS SEC510: Cloud Security Engineering and Controls. SANS offers it as five days instructor-led or 38 hours self-paced, worth 38 CPEs, and lists the OnDemand version at US$8,780. The course covers AWS, Azure and Google Cloud.
SANS recommends coming in with SEC502: Cloud Security Tactical Defense or hands-on experience with AWS and Azure, a basic grasp of cloud IAM and networking concepts, and being comfortable with Bash commands.
The course is optional for the exam. GIAC does not require training, so engineers who already work across the three clouds can prepare from the objectives on their own.

GPCS practice test and how to prepare
Work through the eight objectives one cloud at a time, then side by side. For each, note how AWS, Azure and Google Cloud implement it and where the defaults differ — that is where multicloud questions catch people.
GIAC sells an official GPCS practice exam for US$399. GIAC states that practice exams are a simulation of the real exam, that they never include actual exam questions, and that the practice bank is limited, so repeated tests can show the same question.
GIAC’s exam integrity policy treats any use of “exam dump” sites with actual or possible GIAC questions as misconduct, with sanctions up to revocation of GIAC certifications and bans from future GIAC programmes.

GPCS renewal
GIAC certifications are kept active by collecting 36 credits over four years. The GPCS renewal fee is US$499, and further renewals within two years of a full-price renewal cost US$249 — useful if you hold several GIAC certs.

GPCS vs GCLD
GCLD, GIAC Cloud Security Essentials, is GIAC’s broader cloud security cert. On paper the exams look alike — 75 questions in 2 hours, US$999 per attempt — but GCLD’s passing score is 61% on its version released on or after 9 April 2021, against 64% for GPCS.
The difference is depth and focus. GIAC frames GCLD as fluency in the cloud security landscape, while GPCS is about securing services across AWS, Azure and Google Cloud in detail, down to serverless functions and instance metadata. GIAC publishes no salary data for either, so choose by how hands-on your cloud work is.

GPCS practice questions
Certsqill’s GPCS practice questions come with an explanation for every answer option and a readiness score for each of GIAC’s eight objectives, so you can see whether serverless, IAM or storage is the area holding you back.
