GCIA certification: cost, exam format and training
GCIA — GIAC Certified Intrusion Analyst — is GIAC’s certification for people who detect intrusions by reading network traffic: packets, protocols, IDS rules and network forensics. A standalone certification attempt costs US$999. The proctored exam has 106 questions in 4 hours, the minimum passing score is 67%, and the exam is open book for printed material. You renew with 36 credits every four years and a US$499 fee.

What is the GCIA certification?
The GIAC Certified Intrusion Analyst (GCIA) certification is issued by GIAC, the certification body that works alongside SANS training. It is a network-side credential: it tests whether you can look at raw traffic and decide what is normal, what is an attack, and what the evidence says happened.
GIAC groups the content into three areas: fundamentals of traffic analysis and application protocols; open-source intrusion detection systems, namely Snort and Zeek; and network traffic forensics and monitoring. Where GCFA works on the host, GCIA works on the wire.
GIAC names who the cert is for: practitioners responsible for intrusion detection, system analysts, security analysts, network engineers and administrators, and hands-on security managers. In practice that means SOC analysts, detection engineers and anyone who writes or tunes IDS rules.

How much does the GCIA certification cost?
GIAC publishes its prices in US dollars. A standalone GCIA certification attempt costs US$999. If you do not pass, an exam retake costs US$899. If you run out of time before sitting the exam, an attempt extension costs US$479. A GCIA practice exam bought on its own costs US$399.
A missed proctored appointment carries a US$175 reseating fee, which comes with a seven-day extension from your current deadline — so book a slot you can actually keep.
The attempt does not include training. If you buy it together with a SANS course, the bundle price is set on the SANS course page; the SEC503 OnDemand listing showed US$8,780 for the course itself.

GCIA exam format: questions, time and passing score
The GCIA exam is one proctored exam with 106 questions and a 4-hour time limit, which is roughly two and a quarter minutes per question if you use all of it. The minimum passing score is 67% for candidates who receive the exam version released on or after 21 January 2023.
GCIA includes CyberLive, which GIAC describes as a hands-on format that replaces traditional multiple-choice testing with performance-based challenges. GIAC does not publish how many of the 106 questions are CyberLive tasks, so prepare to work hands-on with traffic, not just to recognise the right option.
A standalone attempt gives you 120 days from activation to sit the exam. Extensions and retakes push that out, but GIAC caps the total access period for any certification attempt at 570 days.

Is the GCIA exam open book?
Yes. GIAC exams are open book, but not open internet or open computer. You may bring an armful of hardcopy books and notes, including your own index. Electronic devices — extra computers, tablets, USB flash drives, phones — are not allowed.
Printed material that looks like practice test or exam questions and answers is not permitted either. For GCIA, a good printed reference for TCP/IP header fields and tcpdump filter syntax tends to earn its desk space.

What is on the GCIA exam?
GIAC lists fifteen exam certification objectives for GCIA. They start at the link layer and IP headers, go through TCP, UDP, ICMP, IPv6 and fragmentation, and end with IDS rules, traffic analysis tools and network forensics. GIAC does not publish a weighting, so no objective can safely be skipped.
- Advanced IDS Concepts
- Application Protocols
- Concepts of TCP/IP and the Link Layer
- Fragmentation
- IDS Fundamentals and Network Architecture
- Intrusion Detection System Rules
- IP Headers
- IPv6
- Network Forensics and Traffic Analysis
- Packet Engineering
- SiLK and Other Traffic Analysis Tools
- TCP
- Tcpdump Filters
- UDP and ICMP
- Wireshark Fundamentals

GCIA training and course: SANS SEC503
GIAC does not require a course before you buy a GCIA attempt — the GCIA page lists no prerequisites. The training SANS maps to the certification is SEC503: Network Monitoring and Threat Detection In-Depth, which SANS lists with the GIAC Certified Intrusion Analyst certification.
SANS lists SEC503 as six days instructor-led or 46 hours self-paced, worth 46 CPEs, delivered in person, virtually or self-paced with four months of access. The OnDemand price on the SANS page was US$8,780.
SANS rates the course intermediate and says there are no specific prerequisites, though some knowledge of network monitoring helps. For the labs it asks for a modern 64-bit laptop with at least 8GB of RAM, 16GB recommended.

How to study for the GCIA exam
Start from the fifteen objectives, not from a tool. GCIA rewards people who can read a header field by field, so spend early study time on IP, TCP, UDP and ICMP structure and on fragmentation, then move to tcpdump filters, Wireshark and IDS rule logic.
Because the exam is open book, build an index of your printed material as you go: topic, book, page. Finding the right offset or filter in seconds matters over four hours.
Use practice exams to measure, not to memorise. GIAC states that practice exams never include actual exam questions and that its practice pool is limited, so the same item can come back on a second test. Take one after your first full pass through the material and another when you feel ready.

GCIA dumps and exam integrity
GIAC’s exam integrity policy lists any use of or reference to exam dump sites containing actual or possible GIAC questions and answers as a violation, and says candidates must not share or accept knowledge of test content, including questions, answers or scenarios.
The sanctions include revocation of previously issued GIAC certifications back to the date they were issued, and bans from future GIAC programmes and certification attempts. With live packet analysis in the exam, memorised answers would not carry you far anyway.

How do you renew GCIA?
GIAC certifications are kept active by collecting 36 credits over four years. The renewal fee listed for GCIA is US$499; additional renewals within two years of paying a full-price renewal cost US$249.
Log credits as you earn them. Training, conferences and relevant work can count, and catching up in the final months of the cycle is harder than it sounds.

GCIA practice questions
Certsqill’s GCIA practice questions are expert-developed: every answer option comes with an explanation, and a readiness score for each domain helps when GIAC lists fifteen objectives without weights and you need to know which ones are still weak.
