GMAT scores, percentiles and test dates

A GMAT score is a Total Score from 205 to 805, always ending in 5, plus three section scores from 60 to 90. GMAC’s July 2025 concordance table puts a Total Score of 645 at the 86.7th percentile and 705 at the 98th. There are no fixed GMAT test dates: you book an online or test center appointment that fits your application timeline.

GMAT score range

The GMAT score range for the Total Score is 205 to 805, in steps of 10, so every Total Score ends in 5. Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Data Insights each get a section score from 60 to 90, in steps of 1. GMAC gives a standard error of measurement of about 30 to 40 points for the Total Score and about 3 points per section.

The older 10th Edition used a 200 to 800 scale. GMAC says comparing scores across the two editions is not meaningful, so a target written as 700 is not the same as a 705 on today’s exam.

Highest GMAT score

The highest GMAT score is 805, the top of the Total Score scale; 90 is the highest section score. In GMAC’s concordance table, 805 sits at the 100th percentile.

Reaching the highest score on the GMAT has one odd consequence: GMAC’s exam policies say that after a perfect score you must wait at least five years to test again.

GMAT score percentiles

A percentile tells you what percentage of test takers you performed better than; a 75th percentile means you beat 75% of them. GMAC updates percentiles every year. Its current concordance table, updated July 2025, is based on test takers between July 1, 2020 and June 30, 2025.

These are the Total Score percentiles from that GMAT score range percentile table, rounded to the nearest tenth as GMAC publishes them:

  • 805: 100.0%
  • 755: 99.9%
  • 705: 98.0%
  • 685: 95.8%
  • 655: 90.5%
  • 645: 86.7%
  • 605: 70.3%
  • 555: 47.8%
  • 505: 27.1%

What percentage of GMAT scores are 647 or higher?

No GMAT Total Score is exactly 647, because all Total Scores end in 5. The nearest scores are 645 and 655. In GMAC’s July 2025 table, 645 is at the 86.7th percentile, meaning 86.7% of test takers in that period scored below it, and 655 is at the 90.5th percentile.

GMAC also notes that scores have shifted over the years and the distribution is uneven, which is why percentiles are recalculated annually.

Average GMAT score and what is a good GMAT score

GMAC does not publish an average GMAT score on the score pages we checked, so we do not quote one. The percentile table is the official way to place your result: a 555 is just below the 50th percentile (47.8%).

What is a good GMAT score depends on the programs you apply to, not on a GMAC definition. Look up the class profiles of your target programs, convert any figure from the old 200 to 800 scale with care, and set your target in today’s 205 to 805 terms.

GMAT score calculator: can you calculate your GMAT score?

GMAC does not offer a GMAT score calculator on the pages we checked. Your Total Score is based on your performance across all three sections, and because the exam is computer adaptive there is no simple formula from correct answers to points.

If you want to estimate GMAT score results before test day, take an official practice exam: GMAC’s Official Practice Exams use the same algorithm, scoring and timing as the real exam. Unofficial converters that map section scores to a Total Score are not GMAC tools.

GMAT test dates and the GMAT testing schedule

There is no fixed national calendar of GMAT test dates. You create an mba.com account, choose an online or test center appointment, and pick your date and time. GMAC tells candidates to schedule the GMAT around their application timeline and warns that test center slots from August to November fill up quickly.

Plan your GMAT testing schedule backwards from your deadlines. Online score reports typically arrive within 3 to 5 days but can take up to 20, and GMAC advises leaving at least 20 days before an application deadline. Remember the retake rule of at least 16 days between attempts if you may need a second try.

GMAT verbal topics

GMAT verbal topics are not a list of subjects to memorize. The Verbal Reasoning section tests two skills: reading comprehension, with passages of up to 350 words, and critical reasoning, where you draw conclusions from short arguments. Passages can be on any subject; the knowledge you need is in the text.
