GMAT study guide: plan, books and timing
To study for the GMAT, GMAC recommends at least six weeks of serious revision with a week-by-week study plan, starting with a baseline practice exam. The GMAT Official Guide, sold by GMAC as the Official Guide Bundle 2025-2026 with an online question bank, is the flagship official book; the free Official Starter Kit includes a study plan and two full-length practice exams.

How long to study for the GMAT
GMAC’s registration guide advises allowing at least six weeks of serious revision time using a week-by-week study plan. That is a minimum, not a fixed number: GMAC’s prep page stresses setting a pace that works for you and your lifestyle, and it gives no total number of hours.
How long does it take to study for GMAT readiness in your case? Your baseline decides. Take GMAC’s free Practice Exam 1 first; the gap between that score and your target tells you whether six weeks is enough or whether you need longer. GMAC recommends taking the exam about four weeks before your application deadline, so count backwards from there.

A six-week GMAT study plan
GMAC offers a free 6-Week Study Planner and a study plan inside the Official Starter Kit. Built around the three 45-minute sections, a GMAT study schedule can look like this. The week-by-week split below is our suggestion, not a GMAC plan:
- Week 1: Practice Exam 1 as a baseline, then learn the format of Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Data Insights.
- Weeks 2 and 3: your weakest section first; untimed practice to fix concepts, then timed sets.
- Week 4: the other two sections, with Data Insights formats practiced one by one.
- Week 5: mixed timed sets and review of every error; a full practice exam at the end of the week.
- Week 6: Practice Exam 2 under test-day conditions, final review of recurring mistakes, then the exam.

How to study for the GMAT
How to study for GMAT success comes down to three habits. Measure before you study, so your time goes to your weakest section. Practice under real timing, because each section gives you 45 minutes for 20 to 23 questions. Review every error, including lucky guesses, until you can say why each wrong option is wrong.
Mix official and other questions with care. The official questions show you GMAC’s style; other GMAT study material is useful for volume, as long as it follows the current three-section format. Regular GMAT study in shorter blocks also makes it easier to keep reviewing errors while they are fresh.

GMAT Official Guide
The GMAT Official Guide is GMAC’s flagship prep resource. GMAC describes it as having all the tools you need to succeed on each section, plus an online question bank for customized practice. The current product on mba.com is the Official Guide Bundle 2025-2026, as an eBook with the online question bank.
The official guide for GMAT preparation is most useful after your baseline: use the online question bank to filter by section and question type, and keep the full practice exams for checkpoints.

GMAT books and GMAT prep books
GMAT books fall into two groups. Official books and bundles from GMAC contain questions written by GMAC, the organization behind the exam. GMAT prep books from other publishers explain strategies and add practice; we do not name them here.
When you choose GMAT practice books from any publisher, check the edition: books written before the current exam may still teach sentence correction or report scores on the old 200 to 800 scale.
