What official GMAT course material GMAC offers

GMAC’s prep page lists official products rather than a GMAT course with an instructor. The free Official Starter Kit contains 70 sample questions with a guided review, two full-length practice exams and a study plan for learning the format. Beyond that, GMAC sells further practice exams that use the same algorithm, scoring and timing as the real exam, Official Practice Questions with hundreds of additional questions and progress checkpoints, and the Official Guide with an online question bank.

Whatever GMAT course material you use, these official questions are the benchmark: they are written by the organization that writes the exam.

GMAT prep courses and GMAT prep classes

GMAT prep courses and GMAT prep classes come from independent providers, not from GMAC. Formats range from self-paced video courses to live online classes for GMAT and in-person groups. We do not name or rank providers here; use the checklist below to compare them.

A GMAT test prep course is only as useful as its fit with the current exam. Some older material still teaches a different format and an old scoring scale.

How to choose the best GMAT prep course

There is no official ranking, so the best GMAT prep course is the one that closes your specific gaps. Before you pay for any GMAT exam prep course, check it against these points:

• It covers all three sections, including Data Insights with its five formats: data sufficiency, multi-source reasoning, table analysis, graphic interpretation and two-part analysis.
• Its Verbal lessons teach reading comprehension and critical reasoning, the two question types GMAC lists, rather than spending hours on sentence correction.
• It reports scores on the 205 to 805 scale, not the old 200 to 800 scale.
• It builds in official practice exams, so you measure progress with GMAC’s own scoring.
• It shows you where you are weak per section, so you can study selectively.

GMAT Focus Edition prep course: what changed

A GMAT Focus Edition prep course is simply a course for the current exam. GMAC describes the Focus Edition Total Score range as 205 to 805, while the previous 10th Edition used 200 to 800, and it says comparing scores across the two editions is not meaningful.

So when a course promises a target score, check which scale it means. The same goes for top GMAT courses that advertise past results: a number from the old scale does not translate one to one.

GMAT scores for top MBA programs

Many candidates choose a course based on the GMAT scores for top MBA programs. GMAC does not publish target scores for individual programs on the pages we checked. Each program publishes its own class profile, and that is the figure to use.

Check whether a program’s published figure is on the current 205 to 805 scale or the old 200 to 800 scale before you set your target, because GMAC treats the two as not directly comparable.
