What is the HashiCorp Vault certification?
HashiCorp’s Vault certification at the foundational level is called HashiCorp Certified: Vault Associate, and the current exam version is Vault Associate (003). The HashiCorp Vault Associate certification is the credential this page covers. It verifies that you understand and can perform the basic work of operating Vault, HashiCorp’s secrets-management tool.
HashiCorp describes the intended candidate as a cloud engineer with foundational Vault knowledge and skills, who may specialise in security, development or operations. The current exam tests against Vault 1.19.
There is a more advanced credential above it — the Vault Authoring and Operations Advanced exam, compared at the end — but the Associate is the entry point and the one most people mean by “the Vault certification.”

How much does the Vault Associate exam cost?
HashiCorp lists the Vault Associate (003) exam at US$70.50, plus locally applicable taxes and fees. A free retake is not included, so a failed attempt means buying another exam.
There is one way to get attempts without paying per exam: HashiCorp states that a HashiConf at TechXchange ticket comes with two free exams. Outside that, the US$70.50 fee is the standard price.

Vault Associate exam format
The Vault Associate (003) exam is online proctored and multiple choice, and it lasts one hour. HashiCorp also describes it plainly as an hour-long multiple-choice exam.
HashiCorp does not publish how many questions the exam contains or the score required to pass. Any specific figure you see quoted elsewhere does not come from HashiCorp, so this page states none.
HashiCorp’s sample-questions resource is the official way to see the question format, type and structure before exam day, which is the useful substitute for a published question count.

What is on the Vault Associate exam? The objectives
HashiCorp publishes an exam content list for Vault Associate (003) with nine objective areas. They move from day-to-day Vault use — authentication, policies, tokens, leases and secrets engines — through encryption as a service, and up to architecture and deployment topics.
The architecture objectives are what distinguish 003 from a pure hands-on test: you are expected to explain cluster strategy, storage backends, Shamir secret sharing and unsealing, and replication, as well as the Vault Agent and the Vault Secrets Operator.

Prerequisites and who should take it
HashiCorp lists no required prerequisite for the Vault Associate exam. It does recommend a baseline: basic terminal skills, an understanding of on-premises and cloud architecture, and an understanding of security.
Professional experience is recommended but not mandatory. HashiCorp explicitly says you can prepare by practising the exam objectives in a personal demo setup, so a home lab with a free Vault instance is a legitimate way to get ready without on-the-job access.

How long is the Vault certification valid, and how do you renew it?
The Vault Associate credential is valid for two years. HashiCorp lays out recertification by scenario based on the version you hold and whether it has expired.
If you hold an unexpired 003 credential, you can either pass the Vault Operations Advanced exam, which extends your Associate credential’s expiration date and earns a new advanced badge, or re-pass the 003 Associate exam starting six months before expiry. If your certification has already expired, the only route is to pass the current Associate exam again, which issues a new, separate credential with a new expiration date.

How to prepare for the Vault Associate exam
HashiCorp provides three official preparation resources for Vault Associate (003): an in-depth learning path, an exam content list for reviewing specific topics, and a set of sample questions to learn the question format before exam day.
A practical order is to work the learning path, then use the exam content list as a checklist — tick off each of the nine objective areas by actually doing it in a demo Vault. HashiCorp’s own guidance to practise the objectives in a personal setup is the strongest hint about how the exam is framed: it rewards having used Vault, not just read about it.
Finish with the sample questions so the exam’s phrasing and structure are familiar, which matters when you only have an hour.

Vault Associate vs Vault Advanced
Above the Associate sits the Vault Authoring and Operations Advanced exam. It is a different kind of test: lab-based scenarios plus multiple choice, four hours with one 15-minute break, priced at US$295 plus taxes, with a free retake included, and it tests Vault 1.16.
HashiCorp strongly recommends holding the Vault Associate certification (or equivalent experience) before the Advanced exam. Both credentials expire after two years. For most people the Associate is the right starting point, with Advanced as a later step once you are running Vault in production.

Vault Associate practice questions
Certsqill’s Vault Associate practice questions are expert-developed: every answer option carries an explanation, and your readiness score is shown per objective area, so you can see whether the architecture objectives are keeping up with the hands-on ones before you book your hour.
