What is the GPHR certification?
GPHR stands for Global Professional in Human Resources. It is issued by HRCI, the HR Certification Institute, and HRCI describes it as designed for HR leaders with multinational responsibilities, including global strategy and the development of HR policies and initiatives that support organizational growth.
Where PHR and SPHR are built around US employment practice, GPHR is built around running HR across borders: global talent strategy, international assignments, cultural dynamics, rewards for local and expatriate employees, and compliance in several jurisdictions at once.
It is a small credential by volume. HRCI’s exam statistics show 428 people tested for GPHR in 2025 and 2,807 GPHR holders as of January 5, 2026 — useful context if you want a credential that signals a specific, international specialism.

GPHR certification requirements
HRCI sets one requirement — professional-level HR experience — and scales it with your education. You qualify with any one of the three options below.
The experience has to be in a professional-level HR role. HRCI’s GPHR page does not require that experience to be international, but the exam content assumes you understand how HR works in multinational organizations, so global exposure makes a real difference in preparation.
- At least 2 years of professional-level HR experience plus a master’s degree or higher
- At least 3 years of professional-level HR experience plus a bachelor’s degree
- At least 4 years of professional-level HR experience with less than a bachelor’s degree

How much does the GPHR certification cost?
The GPHR exam fee is $495, plus a $100 application fee, so $595 in total for the exam itself. HRCI states that the application fee is non-refundable and that once an exam application is approved, no refunds are made if you withdraw or no longer wish to take the exam.
At application, HRCI also offers optional add-ons: GPHR Second Chance Test Insurance for $250, and its own preparation products (listed further down). HRCI notes that you can only build a bundle at the time of your exam application.
- Exam fee: $495
- Application fee: $100 (non-refundable)
- Optional Second Chance Test Insurance: $250

GPHR exam format and how it is delivered
The GPHR exam has 100 scored questions, mostly multiple-choice, plus 25 pretest questions that do not count towards your score. You get 2 hours and 15 minutes of exam time, plus 30 minutes of administration time.
It is a computer-based exam taken at a Pearson VUE testing center or, for residents of the United States and Canada, online at home or in the office through OnVUE. HRCI offers year-round testing, and appointments are first come, first served, so book soon after approval.
Once your application is approved, you have an eligibility period of 180 calendar days to sit the exam.

GPHR passing score and pass rate
HRCI uses scaled scores. Its handbook states that the passing score for each exam type is set at 500, regardless of the version of the exam you take. That is a scaled score, not a percentage of questions answered correctly.
Unusually, HRCI publishes its pass rates, because accreditation standards require accredited certification programs to make pass rate data public every year. As of December 31, 2025, HRCI reports a GPHR pass rate of 56% — noticeably lower than its 72% for PHR, which tells you GPHR is not a formality even for experienced HR professionals.
If you do not pass, the handbook sets a 90-day cooling-off period from the unsuccessful exam date before you can retake.

What is on the GPHR exam?
HRCI’s GPHR exam content outline took effect in 2020 and defines six functional areas. Strategic global HR is the largest at a quarter of the exam; the remaining areas are close together, so none can be skipped.
Expect questions framed around multinational organizations: aligning HR strategy with global business strategy, comparing sourcing approaches across countries, preparing employees for overseas assignments, rewarding local and expatriate staff, and applying principles of the EU General Data Protection Regulation.
- Strategic Global Human Resources — 25%
- Global Talent Management — 20%
- Global Mobility — 15%
- Workplace Culture — 15%
- Total Rewards — 15%
- Risk Management and Compliance — 10%

How to keep your GPHR: recertification
Your GPHR certification is valid for three years. To maintain it, you earn 60 recertification credits in that period — 45 HR credits and 15 Global credits — or you retake the exam.
The 15 Global credits are what set GPHR recertification apart from PHR and SPHR, so track them separately from your general HR credits instead of discovering a shortfall at the end of the cycle.

Official GPHR study materials and practice exams
Start with the GPHR exam content outline: it is HRCI’s own definition of what the exam measures, area by area. Then read the Certification Policies and Procedures handbook for the rules on application, eligibility period, scheduling and retakes.
HRCI also sells its own preparation. HRCI GPHR Cert Prep costs $499 ($449 in a bundle with your application) and includes full-length pre- and post-test practice exams, flashcards and a study plan tool; versions with video ($699) and with a companion textbook ($549) exist too. Access lasts 180 days from purchase.
For practice exams only, HRCI offers a timed GPHR practice exam with 50 questions and a score analysis by content area, and an untimed one with 30 questions and rationales for correct and incorrect answers, at $85 each or $150 together.

GPHR vs SPHR
GPHR and SPHR are both senior HRCI credentials and cost the same — $495 plus the $100 application fee — but they measure different things. SPHR is designed for leaders who shape HR strategy and policy, and its credits include 15 Business credits; GPHR is designed for multinational HR responsibility, with 15 Global credits.
The entry bar differs too. SPHR requires four years of professional HR experience with a master’s, five with a bachelor’s or seven without — GPHR requires two, three or four. The SPHR exam is longer: 115 scored questions in 2 hours 30 minutes, against 100 in 2 hours 15 minutes for GPHR.
If your role spans several countries, GPHR is the more precise signal. If your work is strategic but mainly within one country, SPHR fits better.
