What is the SPHR certification?
SPHR stands for Senior Professional in Human Resources. It is issued by HRCI, the HR Certification Institute, and HRCI describes it as designed for leaders who shape HR strategy and policy, align people practices with business goals and guide organizational direction in the United States.
So what is a SPHR certification in practical terms? It is a senior credential that HRCI only lets you attempt once you have several years of professional-level HR work behind you, followed by an exam weighted heavily towards leadership and strategy. The SPHR certification meaning, in one line: proof that you work on HR at the policy level, not only in day-to-day administration.
The full name of the credential is the Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) certification, and it is the senior step above HRCI’s PHR. For an HR SPHR certification holder, the letters after the name signal that the experience bar and the strategic exam were both cleared; for employers, the certification SPHR is a quick filter for senior HR roles in the US.

SPHR certification cost
HRCI publishes two SPHR fees: an application fee of US$100 and an exam fee of US$495, so the total is US$595. HRCI states that once an exam application is approved, there are no refunds if you withdraw or no longer wish to take the exam, so apply when you are ready to sit it within the eligibility period.
Asked as “what is the cost of SPHR exam” or “SPHR exam fee”, the answer is US$495 for the exam itself; the US$100 application fee comes on top. HRCI’s fee page does not publish a separate retake fee, so a second attempt should be budgeted as a new cost rather than assumed to be free.
For anyone comparing PHR/SPHR certification cost: the PHR costs US$495 in total (US$100 application plus US$395 exam), the SPHR US$595. Preparation material is a separate cost that depends on what you buy.
- Application fee: US$100
- SPHR exam cost: US$495
- Total: US$595
- PHR for comparison: US$100 + US$395 = US$495

SPHR certification requirements
The SPHR certification requirements are experience-based, and the degree only changes how much experience you need. HRCI lists three routes: at least four years in a professional-level HR role plus a master’s degree or higher; at least five years plus a bachelor’s degree; or at least seven years with no degree requirement.
The key word in all three requirements for SPHR certification is professional-level. HRCI’s handbook defines professional-level HR experience by, among other things, the ability to use independent judgment and discretion in your work — so years in a purely clerical HR role do not count the same way.
If you are weighing PHR/SPHR certification requirements side by side: the PHR asks for one year with a master’s, two with a bachelor’s or four without a degree. Many candidates who do not yet meet the SPHR bar take the PHR first.
- 4 years of professional-level HR experience + master’s degree or higher
- 5 years of professional-level HR experience + bachelor’s degree
- 7 years of professional-level HR experience, no degree requirement

How to get SPHR certification
The route has four steps. Check that your experience meets one of the three eligibility options, apply to HRCI and pay the fees, schedule the exam with Pearson VUE, and pass with a scaled score of at least 500.
HRCI offers year-round testing, and its handbook gives you an eligibility period of 180 calendar days from the date your application is approved; you must schedule and take the exam within that period. If you do not pass, the handbook sets a 90-day cool-off period before you can test again.
SPHR certification online is possible for the exam itself: HRCI offers it at a Pearson VUE testing center or at home or in your office through OnVUE online proctoring.

SPHR exam format and passing score
The SPHR exam has 115 scored questions, mostly multiple-choice, plus 25 pretest questions that do not count. You cannot tell which questions are pretest items, so treat all 140 as scored. You get 2 hours and 30 minutes for the questions, plus 30 minutes of administration time.
HRCI’s handbook states that the passing score for each exam type is set at 500, regardless of which version of the exam you take, and that a scaled score of at least 500 is needed to pass. That is a scaled score, not a percentage of questions correct.
HRCI also publishes pass rates, because its NCCA accreditation requires it: as of 31 December 2025, HRCI reports a 76% pass rate for the SPHR exam. That figure describes candidates who already met the experience requirement, so it says little about how an unprepared candidate would do.

What is on the SPHR exam?
HRCI’s SPHR Exam Content Outline, in effect since 2024, splits the exam into five functional areas. Leadership and strategy alone is a third of the exam — the clearest sign that the SPHR tests strategic HR, not transactional HR.
Talent management at 23% is the second-largest area. Workforce planning and talent acquisition and total rewards carry 17% each, and HR information management, safety and security the remaining 10%. Plan your study and prep time roughly in proportion.
- Leadership and Strategy — 33%
- Talent Management — 23%
- Workforce Planning and Talent Acquisition — 17%
- Total Rewards — 17%
- HR Information Management, Safety, and Security — 10%

What is PHR and SPHR certification? PHR or SPHR?
Both are HRCI certifications focused on US HR practice, at two levels. HRCI describes the PHR as designed for HR professionals focused on implementing programs and supporting day-to-day operations; the SPHR is aimed at leaders who shape HR strategy and policy.
The exams differ in length and price: the PHR has 90 scored questions plus 25 pretest questions in 2 hours, the SPHR 115 scored plus 25 pretest in 2 hours 30 minutes. The PHR exam fee is US$395, the SPHR’s US$495. Renewal differs too: PHR holders need 60 HR credits every three years, SPHR holders 60 credits of which 15 must be Business credits.
Choosing between the PHR or SPHR certification comes down to your experience and your role. If you meet the SPHR experience bar and your work is about strategy and policy, the SPHR is the better fit; if your role is operational or you do not yet have the years, start with the PHR. Holding the PHR and SPHR certification in sequence is a common path.

SPHR certification courses, classes and training
HRCI does not require a course before you sit the SPHR. Training is optional, and HRCI itself sells preparation: the HRCI SPHR Cert Prep digital learning system, plus timed and untimed SPHR practice exams. It also links to a “Find a Preparation Provider” directory for third-party SPHR certification courses.
If you are looking at SPHR certification classes near me, that directory is the place to start; formats range from live online classes to self-paced study. An SPHR certification course online and a classroom course cover the same exam, so the choice is about how you learn best.
Whatever SPHR certification training or SPHR exam prep course you consider, check it against HRCI’s 2024 content outline — five functional areas, with leadership and strategy at 33% — and confirm it is current. The same applies to PHR/SPHR certification online programs that bundle both levels: make sure the SPHR material reflects the SPHR outline, not the PHR one.

SPHR certification verification
HRCI’s handbook states that the names of currently certified individuals are not considered confidential and may be published or verified by HRCI. HRCI also links to a Directory of Certified HR Professionals on its website.
So to verify SPHR certification for a candidate or employee, use HRCI’s own directory or contact HRCI rather than relying on a copy of a certificate. Because the SPHR is valid for three years, a check also shows whether the credential is still current.

How to keep the SPHR: renewal every three years
HRCI states that the SPHR is valid for three years after testing. To keep it, you earn 60 recertification credits over the three years — 45 HR credits and 15 Business credits — or you retake the exam.
The Business credit requirement is what sets SPHR renewal apart from PHR renewal. Plan those 15 credits deliberately rather than discovering at the end of the cycle that all your credits are HR credits.

SPHR certification salary and SHRM
HRCI does not publish a current SPHR certification salary figure. The only salary study on its site is a PayScale report based on data from 2012 to 2013, which is too old to describe pay today, so no number is quoted here.
A frequent search is SHRM SPHR certification. The SPHR is issued by HRCI, not by SHRM; SHRM runs its own, separate credentials, including the SHRM-SCP. They are different certifications with different exams.

SPHR practice questions
Certsqill’s SPHR practice questions are expert-developed: every question explains each answer option, and a readiness score for each of the five functional areas shows whether leadership and strategy, a third of the exam, is ready before you spend an attempt.
