RHCSA certification: EX200 hands-on exam, RHEL 10 and renewal
The RHCSA certification (Red Hat Certified System Administrator) is earned by passing exam EX200, a hands-on, practical exam based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10. Red Hat states it stays current for 3 years and offers one free retake after a failed first attempt; it does not publish price, duration or passing score on the exam page.

What is the RHCSA certification?
RHCSA stands for Red Hat Certified System Administrator. Red Hat states that the credential is earned after successfully passing the RHCSA exam, EX200. It certifies that you can carry out the core administration tasks on Red Hat Enterprise Linux — storage, users, networking, software, services and security — without assistance.
Red Hat lists among its intended audience experienced Red Hat Enterprise Linux administrators, students who have completed the RH124 and RH134 courses, administrators whose organisation or a DOD 8570 mandate requires certification, and IT professionals working towards RHCE.
RHCSA is the foundation of Red Hat’s certification path. Since 11 May 2026, Red Hat has organised its certifications into a five-level framework, and its FAQ states that EX200 serves as the foundational entry-level requirement for both the Enterprise Linux and Ansible tracks. The RHCE credentials in both tracks build on it.

How much does the RHCSA certification cost?
Red Hat does not show a price on the EX200 exam page without a location: you choose where you are and then see the purchase options. Because Red Hat does not state one figure on the page we can cite, this page does not either.
What Red Hat does publish affects the total cost. Its FAQ states that candidates who are unsuccessful on their first individual exam attempt are eligible for a free exam retake, with a maximum of one free retake per exam. So one purchase covers up to two attempts.
The certification is current for 3 years. Staying current after that means passing an exam again, so budget for at least one more exam purchase per three-year cycle if you need RHCSA on your CV long term.

What is the RHCSA exam format?
Red Hat describes EX200 as a hands-on, practical exam that requires you to undertake real-world tasks. There are no answer options: you are given systems and a list of tasks, and you configure the systems so they meet the requirements.
Internet access is not provided during the exam, and you may not bring any hard-copy or electronic documentation. Red Hat states that for most exams, the documentation that ships with the product is available during the exam — so man pages and installed documentation are your only reference.
The exam is based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10. Red Hat’s FAQ states that nearly any Red Hat exam can be taken from home or office through its remote exam delivery option, and that all delivery methods use the same performance-based testing. Red Hat does not state the exam duration or the number of tasks on the exam page.

RHCSA passing score
Red Hat does not publish a passing score for EX200 on the exam page or in its FAQ. The FAQ states that your results include a Pass/Fail status and an objective-based score breakdown, and that official results arrive by email within three U.S. business days.
For preparation, the absence of a published cut score means you cannot plan to skip an objective area and make up the points elsewhere with any confidence. The safer target is to be able to complete every objective group listed below reliably — and to check your own work, because the systems are evaluated on their final state.
The objective-based breakdown is useful if you do need the free retake: it tells you which areas to fix instead of starting over.

What is on the RHCSA exam?
Red Hat states that RHCSA exam candidates should be able to accomplish the listed tasks without assistance. The objectives are grouped into ten areas; Red Hat publishes no percentage weighting for them.
Each group expands into specific tasks on the exam page, so treat the list below as the table of contents and the exam page as the checklist.
- Understand and use essential tools
- Manage software
- Create simple shell scripts
- Operate running systems
- Configure local storage
- Create and configure file systems
- Deploy, configure, and maintain systems
- Manage basic networking
- Manage users and groups
- Manage security

RHCSA prerequisites
Red Hat’s exam page lists the preparation it expects: having taken Red Hat System Administration I (RH124) and Red Hat System Administration II (RH134), or the RHCSA Rapid Track course (RH199), or having comparable work experience as a system administrator on Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
The “comparable work experience” option means the courses are not a gate. There is no prior certification required to sit EX200; it is the entry point of the Enterprise Linux and Ansible tracks.

How long is the RHCSA valid?
Red Hat states that certifications are current for 3 years from the date earned, and that you must renew them before they expire.
Its FAQ lists three renewal routes: retake — pass the exam associated with your highest-level certification; expand (also called “level up”) — earn another certification at the same level as your highest one; or advance — earn a higher-level certification, which renews all your lower-level certifications.
For an RHCSA holder, the advance route means that earning a higher-level credential, such as one of the RHCE credentials, also renews the RHCSA underneath it.

RHCSA study materials and training
Red Hat’s own preparation path for EX200 is Red Hat System Administration I (RH124) followed by Red Hat System Administration II (RH134). Experienced administrators can take the RHCSA Rapid Track course (RH199) instead.
The authoritative scope is the objectives list on the EX200 exam page. It changes with the Red Hat Enterprise Linux version — the exam is currently based on RHEL 10 — so make sure any material you use was written for that version.
Because product documentation is available in the exam but the internet is not, practise finding answers in man pages and the documentation installed on the system. That habit is part of what the exam tests.

RHCSA vs LFCS
Both are performance-based Linux administration exams, but they test different things. RHCSA is based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10 and tests administration of that distribution. The Linux Foundation states that its LFCS exam is independent of distribution-specific tasks.
The publication policies differ too. The Linux Foundation lists the LFCS price ($445 for the exam only) and duration (2 hours) on its certification page. Red Hat shows the EX200 price only after you choose a location and does not state a duration on the exam page.
If your work is on Red Hat Enterprise Linux, RHCSA matches it directly and leads on to RHCE. If you work across distributions, LFCS is the vendor-neutral option.

RHCSA practice questions
Be clear about the limits: EX200 is scored on systems you configure, so knowledge questions complement hands-on practice on a RHEL 10 machine and cannot replace it. What they add is a fast check of the concepts behind each objective — which file makes a mount persistent, how SELinux contexts are restored, what a systemd target does — before you spend lab time on them.
Certsqill’s RHCSA practice questions explain each option and are grouped by Red Hat’s published objective areas.
