What is the CNPE certification?
CNPE stands for Certified Cloud Native Platform Engineer. CNCF describes it as a community-driven certification designed to validate advanced, real-world platform engineering expertise, from architecting internal developer platforms (IDPs) to enabling self-service infrastructure for development teams.
CNCF announced the global availability of the CNPE on 11 November 2025 and positions it as building on the Certified Cloud Native Platform Engineering Associate (CNPA). The Linux Foundation rates it at intermediate level, and CNCF names its intended audience as experienced platform engineers, senior DevOps and SRE practitioners and platform architects.
Unlike the associate-level CNPA, the CNPE is a hands-on cert. You do not pick answers from a list; you configure GitOps workflows, platform APIs, observability and policy on real Kubernetes clusters.

How much does the CNPE exam cost?
The CNPE exam costs $445. CNCF states that the price includes one free retake, so a failed first attempt does not mean buying a second exam.
The Linux Foundation also sells the exam bundled with a THRIVE-ONE annual subscription, which gives access to its e-learning catalogue, for $625. The Linux Foundation advertises this bundle as a 40% saving on CNPE compared with buying the parts separately.
After purchase you have 12 months of exam eligibility to schedule and sit the exam, and the free retake has to fall within that window as well.

CNPE exam format
The CNPE is an online, proctored, performance-based exam. According to the Linux Foundation’s exam instructions, it consists of 15 to 20 performance-based tasks, and you have 2 hours to complete them. Each task is done on a designated host that you reach over SSH, with kubectl (aliased to k), yq, curl, wget and man pages preinstalled.
The exam environment currently runs Kubernetes v1.35. During the exam you may use the Kubernetes documentation and the Kubernetes blog, plus any task-specific documentation shown in the task’s quick reference box; other sites are prohibited.
The exam is taken on PSI’s proctoring platform, Bridge, using the PSI Secure Browser, and the tasks are available in English. Results are scored automatically, and the score report is emailed within 24 hours of finishing.

What is the CNPE passing score?
The Linux Foundation’s CNPE FAQ states that a score of 64% or above must be earned to pass. For comparison, the Linux Foundation’s pass mark for its multiple-choice exams is 75%.
With 15 to 20 tasks in 120 minutes, you have roughly six to eight minutes per task on average. A task left half-finished can leave a resource in the wrong state, so time management is part of the exam, not an afterthought.

CNPE exam domains and curriculum
The Linux Foundation publishes five domains with fixed weights, and CNCF has open-sourced the CNPE curriculum. GitOps and continuous delivery and platform APIs with self-service capabilities carry a quarter of the exam each, so together they make up half of your score.
Read the competencies as lab tasks: implementing GitOps workflows for applications and infrastructure, building CI/CD pipelines integrated with Kubernetes, rolling out with blue/green or canary strategies, designing Custom Resource Definitions, using Kubernetes operators, and enforcing policy with policy engines and admission controllers.
- Platform Architecture and Infrastructure — 15%: networking, storage and compute best practices, cost management for right-sizing and scaling, multi-tenancy resource usage
- GitOps and Continuous Delivery — 25%: GitOps workflows, CI/CD pipelines integrated with Kubernetes, progressive delivery such as blue/green or canary
- Platform APIs and Self-Service Capabilities — 25%: Custom Resource Definitions, self-service provisioning workflows, Kubernetes operators, automation frameworks
- Observability and Operations — 20%: monitoring, alerting, logging and tracing, deployment metrics, diagnosing and remediating platform incidents
- Security and Policy Enforcement — 15%: secure service-to-service communication, RBAC, audit trails and SBOMs, policy engines and admission controllers, security scanning in pipelines

CNPE prerequisites and who it is for
There are no prerequisites for the CNPE exam. You do not need the CNPA, CKA or any other certification to register, and the Linux Foundation lists no experience requirement.
The intended audience, however, is clearly experienced: CNCF names platform engineers, senior DevOps and SRE practitioners and platform architects, and people working towards senior or principal platform engineer roles. In practice the tasks assume you are comfortable with kubectl and YAML on a live cluster, because the exam gives you a shell, not a tutorial.

How long is the CNPE certification valid?
The CNPE certification is valid for 2 years. According to the Linux Foundation’s FAQ, you renew it by retaking and passing the exam, the renewal must be completed before the expiration date, and the renewed certification stays current for a further 2 years.
There is no continuing-education route; renewal means sitting the exam again on the then-current curriculum and Kubernetes version.

CNPE exam prep and official training
Every CNPE exam registration includes access to an exam simulator provided by Killer.sh. The Linux Foundation grants two simulation attempts per registration, and each attempt gives 36 hours of access from activation, so you can rehearse the exam interface and task style before the real thing.
For scope, the open-sourced CNCF curriculum and the five weighted domains are the reference to plan against. The Linux Foundation’s THRIVE-ONE bundle adds its e-learning catalogue if you want structured training alongside the exam.
A practical prep plan: build a small cluster, then work through each competency from a blank state using only kubernetes.io — set up a GitOps sync, write a CRD, run a canary rollout, add an admission policy, wire up alerting. If you need a resource the exam does not allow to finish a task, that task still needs work.

CNPE vs CNPA
Both are CNCF platform engineering certifications, but they test different things. The CNPA is an online, proctored, multiple-choice exam that costs $250 including one free retake and checks foundational knowledge across six domains. The CNPE costs $445 and is performance-based: you solve tasks on live clusters.
CNCF describes the CNPE as building on the CNPA, but the CNPA is not a formal prerequisite. If you already work on a platform team and use Kubernetes daily, you can go straight to the CNPE; if platform engineering concepts are new to you, the CNPA is the lower-risk first step.

CNPE practice questions
Certsqill’s CNPE practice questions are expert-developed and organised by the five official domains. Every answer option comes with an explanation — why the right one is right and why each of the others is wrong — and your readiness score is shown per domain, so you can see whether GitOps, platform APIs or security is the weak spot.
Because the CNPE is a hands-on exam, practice questions complement lab time rather than replace it: they check that you know which resource, tool or approach a task calls for before you spend minutes building it. Access comes with a 7-day money-back guarantee.
