What is the CNPA certification?
CNPA stands for Certified Cloud Native Platform Engineering Associate. CNCF and Linux Foundation Education launched it in June 2025 to validate the knowledge of professionals who design, build and maintain cloud native platforms — the internal tooling, automation and self-service infrastructure that lets development teams ship and run applications without filing a ticket for every environment.
The Linux Foundation positions it as an early-career credential: the experience level is listed as Beginner, and the certification page describes it as a way to validate skills for early-career platform engineering roles and as a first step toward IT team leadership. CNCF calls CNPA the first step in a new platform engineering certification path, with the hands-on CNPE as the next level.
The exam is knowledge-based rather than hands-on. You answer multiple-choice questions about platform engineering concepts, practices and measurement; you do not configure a live cluster during the exam.

How much does the CNPA exam cost?
The CNPA exam costs $250 when bought on its own. The Linux Foundation also sells it as a bundle for $495, which adds a THRIVE-ONE annual subscription — access to more than 100 Linux Foundation educational products and SkillCreds for a year.
Both options include one retake, and you have 12 months from purchase to take the exam. That makes the real cost of a first failed attempt zero, as long as the retake happens inside the 12-month eligibility window.
The prices above are list prices in US dollars as shown on the certification page; the binding figure is the one shown at checkout.

CNPA exam format: questions, time and delivery
The CNPA exam is an online, proctored, multiple-choice exam. You take it from your own computer with a remote proctor watching through audio, video and screen sharing, so there is no test centre to book.
You get 120 minutes. The Linux Foundation FAQ points out that this is an exception: its other multiple-choice exams, such as KCNA and KCSA, allow 90 minutes, while CNPA candidates are allowed 120.
The Linux Foundation does not publish how many questions the CNPA exam has. Plan your pacing on the clock, not on a question count you read elsewhere. Results arrive by email: the FAQ states that a score report is sent within 24 hours of finishing the exam.

CNPA passing score
The Linux Foundation’s Multiple Choice Exams FAQ, which covers CNPA, states that a score of 75% or above must be earned to pass the multiple-choice exam. The CNPA certification page itself does not repeat a number, so treat 75% as the published threshold for Linux Foundation multiple-choice exams.
A 75% bar leaves little room for a weak domain. With a third of the exam on core fundamentals and the rest spread across five smaller areas, a gap in observability or delivery is enough to drop a candidate below the line even with strong fundamentals.

What is on the CNPA exam? The six domains
The Linux Foundation publishes six weighted domains for the CNPA exam. Core fundamentals carry more than a third of the exam on their own; observability, security and conformance come next at a fifth.
The smaller domains still matter. Internal developer platforms (IDPs), developer experience and platform measurement together account for 16%, and they are the topics where general cloud native knowledge helps least, because they test how a platform team thinks about its users and its own success.
- Platform Engineering Core Fundamentals — 36%
- Platform Observability, Security, and Conformance — 20%
- Continuous Delivery & Platform Engineering — 16%
- Platform APIs and Provisioning Infrastructure — 12%
- IDPs and Developer Experience — 8%
- Measuring your Platform — 8%

CNPA prerequisites: who should take it
There are no prerequisites for the CNPA exam. The certification page does not ask for another CNCF certification first or for proof of work experience.
The Linux Foundation’s launch announcement names three groups the credential is aimed at: cloud engineers and DevOps professionals moving into platform engineering, software engineers interested in infrastructure automation, and IT professionals looking at leadership paths. Basic familiarity with containers, Kubernetes and CI/CD makes the domains much easier to follow, but it is advice, not a requirement.

How long is the CNPA certification valid?
The CNPA certification is valid for two years. The Linux Foundation FAQ describes renewal as retaking and passing the exam before the certification expires.
Because platform engineering practice moves quickly, plan the renewal as a fresh exam rather than a formality: the domains and their weightings can change between your first attempt and your renewal.

CNPA course and official study resources
The official starting point is the domain list on the Linux Foundation’s CNPA page. The same page links two CNCF resources that map closely to the exam: the CNCF Platforms White Paper, which defines what a cloud native platform is and why teams build one, and the CNCF Platforms Working Group.
If you want a structured course from the exam provider, the $495 bundle includes a THRIVE-ONE annual subscription with access to more than 100 Linux Foundation educational products. The certification page does not name a single course as required for the exam, and no course is a prerequisite.
Whatever course you choose, check it against the six domains and their weightings. A course that spends most of its time on Kubernetes administration covers only part of what the CNPA exam asks.

CNPA vs CNPE
CNPA and CNPE sit on the same platform engineering path. CNPA is the associate level: multiple choice, 120 minutes, $250, experience level Beginner. CNPE, the Certified Cloud Native Platform Engineer, is an online, proctored, performance-based test with 2 hours to complete hands-on tasks, priced at $445 and listed at Intermediate level.
Neither has a formal prerequisite. The CNPE page lists CNPA among the credentials to consider before attempting CNPE, alongside CKA, CGOA, OTCA and CBA, so CNPA works as the knowledge foundation and CNPE as the proof that you can do the work in a live environment.

CNPA practice questions
Certsqill’s CNPA practice questions are expert-developed and follow the six published domains. Every question comes with an explanation for every answer option, so you learn why the wrong answers are wrong as well as why the right one is right.
Your results roll up into a readiness score per domain, which shows whether you are clearing the 75% bar evenly or leaning on core fundamentals to carry weaker areas such as measurement or developer experience.
Leave exam dumps alone. The Linux Foundation’s certification agreement names braindump material — recollections of others or materials from previous administrations of an exam — as misconduct, and the Linux Foundation may revoke any certifications you have earned and permanently ban you.
