What is the SAS Certified Specialist: Machine Learning Using SAS Viya?
It is SAS’s specialist certification for building supervised machine learning models in SAS Viya. SAS lists it as the Machine Learning Specialist credential in its advanced analytics track, and you earn it by passing a single exam: A00-406, SAS Viya Supervised Machine Learning Pipelines.
As the exam name suggests, the focus is on pipelines in SAS Viya’s visual tooling: preparing data, building models with nodes such as decision trees, gradient boosting, neural networks and support vector machines, then comparing, assessing and deploying them.
The credential is current. SAS retired several data science exams on 30 June 2025, but A00-406 was not among them and the credential page carries no retirement notice.

SAS machine learning certification exam: format and passing score
Exam A00-406 has 50–55 multiple-choice and short-answer questions, and you have 90 minutes to complete it. The passing score is 62%.
Short-answer items mean you cannot rely purely on recognising the right option; some questions expect you to supply a value or term yourself. SAS states that the exam is based on SAS Viya 4.0, so practise in that environment.
SAS uses scaled scores to convert raw scores to a standard scale, and lists the passing criteria within each exam — for A00-406, 62%.

How much does the SAS Viya machine learning exam cost?
The exam fee is $180 in the U.S. and most other countries; SAS links to a country-specific price list for the rest. Students, educators and employees of degree-granting institutions can take SAS exams for US$75 per exam.

What is on the A00-406 exam?
SAS publishes three content areas with weight ranges. Building models is the largest at 40–46%, and data sources and model assessment together make up the rest.
The exam content guide lists the objectives node by node. Under data sources, for example: using the Data Exploration node, event-based sampling for rare events, and the Impute node to impute missing values and create missing-value indicators. Under building models: the Decision Tree, Gradient Boosting, Neural Network and SVM nodes. Under assessment and deployment: the Model Comparison node, the Pipeline Comparison tab, interpreting fit statistics, lift and ROC reports and the event classification chart, and exporting score code.

Where to take the SAS certification exam
SAS states that the exam is administered by SAS and Pearson VUE. SAS exams are generally scheduled through Pearson VUE, and SAS also runs exams at pre-scheduled locations worldwide.
Pearson VUE offers online SAS exams through OnVUE but does not list on that page which SAS exams are available online, so check whether A00-406 is offered remotely when you schedule.

SAS machine learning training and course options
SAS provides a certification pathway on learn.sas.com for this credential, combining training courses, the exam content guide, sample questions and practice exams. That pathway is the official route to prepare.
The exam content guide is the most useful single document: it is the complete list of objectives, and each one maps to a concrete task in SAS Viya — a node to use, a report to interpret or an export to perform.
SAS lists no formal prerequisite for the exam on the credential page.

Retakes, validity and renewal
You may attempt each SAS certification exam up to five times in a 12-month period, with at least 14 days between attempts. Once you pass, no further attempts on that exam are allowed.
The credential expires after 5 years. To renew, SAS lets you retake the associated exam you previously passed any time after one year. If you let the credential expire, you must retake the exam to earn it again.

Machine Learning Specialist and the SAS AI & Machine Learning Professional
The Machine Learning Specialist is also one of three building blocks of the SAS Certified Professional: AI and Machine Learning credential. The other two are the SAS Certified Specialist: Forecasting and Optimization and the SAS Certified Specialist: Natural Language Processing and Computer Vision.
SAS notes one shortcut: holders of the SAS Certified Predictive Modeler credential (version 7 or higher) do not need to take the Machine Learning Specialist exam for the professional credential. The AI & Machine Learning Professional credential expires five years from the date it is earned.

SAS practice exam and exam integrity
SAS lists an official Machine Learning Specialist practice exam on its practice exams page. Once activated, SAS practice exams are available for 180 days, have no timer and include explanations and a score report.
Materials advertised as brain dumps are a different story. SAS’s exam integrity page warns specifically about materials sold as “dumps”, candidates agree not to disclose or share exam questions, and violations can lead to revoked certifications, invalidated results, suspension or a permanent ban, with no refund of testing fees.
