SAT score range and how scores on SAT sections add up

The SAT score range is 400 to 1600 for your total score. Reading and Writing and Math each have a score range of 200 to 800, and your total is the sum of the two. There is no pass mark: the score range on SAT reports is simply the scale colleges read your result on.

Your score report also shows a Score Range in a second sense: how much your scores would likely vary if you took the test again under the same conditions. Percentiles compare your scores with other students who took the same test.

Average SAT scores

According to College Board’s 2025 annual report, 2,004,965 students in the class of 2025 took the SAT. Their mean total score was 1029, with a mean of 521 in Reading and Writing and 508 in Math.

So the average score on SAT reports for that class sits close to the middle of the 400 to 1600 scale. An average is a national benchmark, not a target: the score that matters for you is the range the colleges on your list expect.

  • Average SAT test score, class of 2025: 1029
  • Reading and Writing average: 521
  • Math average: 508

What is a good score on the SAT?

College Board’s answer: it depends on what you want to do with your score. A score that is average at a highly selective school might be in the top percentiles at another, and a strong application can offset a score below a school’s target.

What are good SAT scores for you, then? Look up the desired score range of each college on your list and set your target from that. College Board publishes no single good score.

SAT score calculator: scoring a practice test

On the pages we checked, College Board does not publish an SAT score calculator that converts correct answers into a scaled score. Because each section adapts in its second module, rely on official scoring rather than unofficial conversion tables.

The official way to score a practice test is to take a full-length test in Bluebook while signed in to your College Board account. Your score then appears in My Practice, where Score Details shows every question, your answer and the correct answer, and Get Tailored Practice builds a question set for your weak skills.

How long is an SAT exam?

The testing time is 2 hours and 14 minutes: 64 minutes for Reading and Writing (two 32-minute modules, 54 questions) and 70 minutes for Math (two 35-minute modules, 44 questions). A 10-minute break separates the two sections.

Bluebook tells you when to take your break. Full-length Bluebook practice tests are timed like the real test, so one complete practice run shows you how the 2 hours 14 minutes feel.

If you take the SAT more than once, Score Choice lets you choose which scores to send. Without it, College Board sends all your SAT scores from your most recent six administrations.
