SAT prep courses and classes
A good SAT prep course teaches the four Reading and Writing domains and the four Math domains that College Board publishes, and builds in official full-length practice tests, which College Board offers for free in Bluebook. Before you pay for an SAT prep class, check that it follows the current digital, adaptive test and that it measures your progress with official material.

What an SAT test prep course should cover
Whatever the format, an SAT test prep course should map its lessons to the domains College Board tests. In Reading and Writing that means Information and Ideas, Craft and Structure, Expression of Ideas and Standard English Conventions, practised on short passages of 25 to 150 words with one question each.
In Math, the weight sits in Algebra and Advanced Math (13 to 15 questions each), with Problem-Solving and Data Analysis and Geometry and Trigonometry at 5 to 7 questions each. A course that spends most of its time on geometry tricks has its priorities backwards. It should also train both answer formats: multiple choice and student-produced responses.

Free official practice to pair with SAT prep courses
No course replaces official practice. College Board offers full-length practice tests for free in Bluebook that use the same multistage adaptive model as the real SAT, so a course should schedule at least a few of them and review the results with you.
Between tests, the Student Question Bank holds thousands of real SAT and PSAT questions from the makers of the test, and My Practice can generate questions tailored to your results. College Board’s practice page also points to free, live, small-group tutoring sessions led by trained peer tutors through a partner.

Questions to ask before you book an SAT prep class
These are our own criteria, not College Board rules. They help you compare offers that all claim to be the best SAT preparation class:
- Is the material written for the current digital SAT with two adaptive modules per section?
- Does the syllabus follow the official Reading and Writing and Math domains, with time weighted towards Algebra and Advanced Math?
- Are progress checks based on official Bluebook practice tests, or only on the provider’s own tests?
- How much live teaching, homework review and feedback on your missed questions is included?
- What happens if your test date moves: can you switch to a later class?
Course or self-study?
A course adds structure, deadlines and someone to explain what you got wrong. Self-study with official material costs less and lets you spend time only where you are weak, because the Student Question Bank can be filtered by test, domain, skill and difficulty.
A practical rule: take one full-length Bluebook practice test first. If your weak spots are spread across many domains and you struggle to keep a schedule, a class helps. If two or three skills hold you back, targeted self-study lets you go straight at them.

Using practice tests during the course
College Board recommends keeping track of the questions you missed to spot patterns, then practising those skills. Ask your course to work the same way: after each full practice test, review the explanations in My Practice and use Get Tailored Practice for the skills that came up.
Practising pacing matters because the second module of each section adapts to how you did in the first. A course that only uses untimed worksheets will not prepare you for that.

Checking your readiness alongside a course
A course tells you what is on the SAT; practice under exam conditions tells you whether you are ready. Certsqill’s SAT question bank has expert-developed questions organized by the official domains, an explanation for every answer option and a readiness score per domain.
