What is the SHRM-CP certification?
SHRM-CP stands for SHRM Certified Professional. It is issued by SHRM, the Society for Human Resource Management, which describes it as the global standard certification for HR professionals functioning at the operational level, covering day-to-day HR knowledge and competencies.
It is the first of SHRM’s two certifications. The SHRM-SCP (Senior Certified Professional) sits above it for strategic, senior-level roles. Both exams are built on the SHRM Body of Applied Skills and Knowledge (BASK), which combines behavioural competencies with HR knowledge, so the SHRM-CP tests how you apply HR knowledge in realistic situations, not only what you know.

SHRM-CP exam cost, testing windows and deadlines
SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP share one fee schedule. The early bird rate is US$350 for SHRM members and US$450 for non-members; the standard rate is US$399 and US$499. Early bird rates include a US$50 non-refundable application fee; standard rates add a US$49 non-refundable standard deadline fee on top of that application fee.
SHRM also lists reduced rates for military candidates (US$320 / US$420 early bird, US$369 / US$469 standard) and students (US$150 / US$250 early bird, US$199 / US$299 standard), plus member-only corporate team rates for groups of five or more.
As of October 2026, the early bird period for the winter window has closed, so new applications for that window pay the standard rate. Whether SHRM membership pays off for you is simple arithmetic: compare the US$100 exam saving with the membership cost shown on SHRM’s site.
You cannot take the SHRM-CP at any time of year. SHRM runs two testing windows, and you must apply during the application period that matches your window. In 2026 the windows are 1 May to 15 July 2026 and 1 December 2026 to 15 February 2027.
For the winter window, early bird applications ran from 3 June to 31 August 2026, and standard applications run from 1 September to 24 December 2026. Deadlines close at 11:59 pm Eastern Time. If you need a testing accommodation, request it on the application itself — SHRM requires all requests at the time of application.

SHRM-CP exam format: questions and time
The SHRM-CP exam has 134 multiple-choice questions: 80 stand-alone knowledge items and 54 situational judgment items. Twenty-four of the 134 are unscored field-test items that SHRM uses to trial new questions. They are mixed in at random, so treat every question as if it counts.
The appointment lasts four hours, including 3 hours and 40 minutes of testing time. The exam is split into two separately timed sections of up to 110 minutes each; the rest of the appointment covers an introduction and tutorial, a confidentiality reminder and a short survey.
The exam is computer-based and must be taken in person at an authorised Prometric test centre. SHRM does not list a remote or online-proctored option.

SHRM-CP passing score
SHRM does not publish a fixed number of correct answers needed to pass. The passing score is set using the Modified Angoff method, in which subject-matter experts judge how a minimally qualified candidate would perform on each question. Scores are reported on a scale of 120 to 200, and every candidate who passes receives the maximum score of 200.
SHRM publishes a global exam pass rate of 69% for the SHRM-CP, without stating the period it covers. Treat it as SHRM’s own headline figure, not as a prediction for any individual candidate.

What is on the SHRM-CP exam?
The SHRM-CP is weighted roughly half on behavioural competencies and half on HR knowledge. SHRM’s handbook gives the exact split for the SHRM-CP. By item type, 40% of the exam is situational judgment, 10% foundational knowledge and 50% HR-specific knowledge.
- Leadership (behavioural competency cluster) — 19%
- Business (behavioural competency cluster) — 17.5%
- Interpersonal (behavioural competency cluster) — 13.5%
- People (HR knowledge domain) — 19%
- Organization (HR knowledge domain) — 18%
- Workplace (HR knowledge domain) — 13%

SHRM-CP eligibility requirements
The SHRM-CP has a low entry bar: SHRM states that candidates are not required to hold an HR title and do not need a degree or previous HR experience to apply. SHRM summarises it as no degree or experience needed and ideal for early-career professionals.
The certification is intended for people who perform general HR or HR-related duties, or who are pursuing a career in HR management, and SHRM recommends a basic working knowledge of HR. Eligibility must be met at the time you apply, and SHRM may request a job description to confirm it.

SHRM-CP study materials
SHRM’s own prep programme is the SHRM Certification Prep System, formerly the SHRM Learning System, available in self-study, instructor-led and team formats. SHRM Certification Prep+ is the instructor-led version, offered year-round in classroom, virtual and hybrid formats through SHRM and approved partners. SHRM also links downloadable sample questions on the SHRM-CP page.
Whatever you use, anchor it to the BASK, which SHRM calls the blueprint for both exams. Because 40% of the exam is situational judgment, practise reading a workplace scenario and choosing the most effective response — not just the one that is technically correct.

How do you recertify SHRM-CP?
SHRM certification holders recertify every three years. You can earn 60 professional development credits (PDCs) within your three-year cycle and pay the recertification fee — US$165 for members, US$210 for non-members, or US$240 / US$285 if paid late during the 60-day grace period.
Alternatively, you can retake the certification exam within the last year of your cycle. Be careful with that option: if you fail the retest, SHRM revokes the credential, and you must reapply and pass the exam to regain it.

SHRM-CP vs SHRM-SCP
The two exams share the same format, fee schedule and testing windows. The difference is the level: SHRM-CP covers day-to-day operational HR knowledge and competencies, while SHRM-SCP targets strategic, senior-level roles. SHRM-SCP requires three or more years of strategic HR work, or holding the SHRM-CP for three years.
If you retest after a failed attempt, apply as a new candidate in the next window — testing for the same exam twice in one window is not allowed, but there is no limit on how many times you can reapply.

SHRM-CP practice questions
Certsqill’s SHRM-CP practice questions are expert-developed and mapped to the BASK clusters and domains the exam weights, including the situational judgment style that makes up 40% of the test. Every question explains each answer option, so you learn why one response is most effective and why the plausible alternatives fall short.
Your readiness score is shown per domain, so you can see whether Leadership, People or Workplace needs more work before your testing window. Certsqill comes with a 7-day money-back guarantee.
