TOGAF study guide: self-study materials and a study plan

The Open Group allows you to prepare for TOGAF certification by self-study instead of a training course. This guide covers the official self-study materials for the TOGAF Standard, 10th Edition certifications, and how to plan your study around the published exam plans for Part 1 and Part 2.

Can you self-study for TOGAF?

Yes. The Open Group describes two ways to prepare: attending an accredited training course or self-study. Self-study materials are sold in The Open Group Shop; with self-study you book the exam yourself, since only accredited courses include it in the fee.

Looking for a TOGAF self study pack?

If you are searching for a TOGAF self study pack, the current equivalent for the 10th Edition certifications comes in three pieces, all listed by The Open Group:

  • Study guides in PDF: the Enterprise Architecture Foundation Guide, the Enterprise Architecture Practitioner Guide and the Business Architecture Foundation Guide.
  • Online self-study courses with 60-day access — structured modules, exercises and exam-preparation resources — for Enterprise Architecture Foundation, Enterprise Architecture Practitioner and the Practitioner Bridge.
  • Practice tests, as PDF plus 60-day online access, for Enterprise Architecture Part 1, Part 2, the Practitioner Bridge and Business Architecture Foundation.

Picking the right materials for your level

Match the material to the exam you are booking. For Foundation (Part 1, OGEA-101), the Foundation Guide, the Foundation self-study course and the Part 1 practice test belong together. For Practitioner (Part 2, OGEA-102, or the combined OGEA-103), add the Practitioner Guide and the Part 2 practice test. If you hold TOGAF 9 Certified and are taking the Bridge exam, the Practitioner Bridge course and practice test are the ones written for you.

Hard copies exist too: The Open Group states that its authorised publisher prints the official guides.

A study plan for Part 1 (Foundation)

Part 1 is 40 questions in 60 minutes, closed book, and The Open Group publishes how many questions come from each area. Let that split decide where your hours go:

  • Introduction to the ADM — 14 questions: start here and spend the most time here.
  • Concepts — 8 questions.
  • Introduction to the ADM Techniques — 6 questions.
  • Architecture Content — 5 questions.
  • Introduction to Applying the ADM — 4 questions.
  • Introduction to Architecture Governance — 3 questions.

A study plan for Part 2 (Practitioner)

Part 2 is different in kind: 8 scenario-based questions in 90 minutes, open book, with the Body of Knowledge built into the exam. Each question has a best answer worth 5 points, a second-best worth 3, a third-best worth 1, and an incorrect answer worth 0.

So self-study for Part 2 is less about memorising and more about judgement and navigation. Practise reading a scenario, deciding which ADM phase and which concern it is really about, and then ranking the options. And practise finding things in the Body of Knowledge quickly — you will have it during the exam, but not unlimited time to search it.

Practice tests: stick to official sources

The Open Group names two official sources of TOGAF practice tests — The Open Group Shop and Accredited Training Courses — and warns against unauthorised third-party practice tests. Unofficial questions may not match the current exams, and for Part 2 they rarely reproduce the graded 5-3-1-0 answer key that decides your score.

Certsqill’s TOGAF question bank offers expert-developed questions with an explanation for every answer option and a readiness score per exam domain, with a 7-day money-back guarantee.
