Six Sigma Green Belt exam format
The computer-based six sigma green belt exam has 110 questions. ASQ scores 100 of them and uses 10 as unscored items, which look exactly like the rest. Exam time is 4 hours 18 minutes within a four-and-a-half-hour appointment, and the computer-based version is in English only.
In certain locations ASQ also offers a paper-and-pencil version in Mandarin: 100 questions in four hours. Computer-based exams have a basic scientific calculator on screen, and you may bring a silent, non-programmable hand-held calculator.

The ASQ Six Sigma Green Belt exam is open book
All ASQ exams are open book, which is unusual among certification exams. The rules are strict, though: every reference — including notes — must be bound and stay bound, loose stapled pages are not allowed, and collections of questions and answers or refresher-course quizzes are banned outright.
ASQ says its CSSGB Handbook may be used during the exam. Open book does not mean easy: with about two and a half minutes per question, there is little time to look up more than a few formulas.

Passing score and results
ASQ publishes the bar: 550 points out of a possible 750. On the computer-based six sigma green belt certification test you see your result as soon as you submit, and ASQ confirms it by email.
Retakes are unlimited but cost US$283 each, must happen within two years of your last attempt, and cannot fall in the same exam window as your first try.

What the Six Sigma Green Belt test covers
The six sigma green belt test follows ASQ’s Green Belt Body of Knowledge in six sections: an overview of Six Sigma and the organisation, then Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control. The statistical core sits in Measure and Analyze — probability, distributions, measurement system analysis, process capability and hypothesis testing. Improve includes design of experiments, and Control includes statistical process control.
- Overview: Six Sigma and the Organization
- Define Phase
- Measure Phase
- Analyze Phase
- Improve Phase
- Control Phase

Is there a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt exam?
Not from ASQ. If you are searching for a lean six sigma green belt certification exam, note that ASQ’s exam at this level is the CSSGB, and its Body of Knowledge already covers lean: lean principles in the overview, lean tools in Improve, and lean tools for process control in Control.
So a green belt lean six sigma exam from ASQ does not exist as a separate product. A lean six sigma green belt certification test sold with a training course is that provider’s own assessment, with its own rules. If you prepare for a lean six sigma green belt test of that kind, the ASQ Body of Knowledge is still a solid map of what a Green Belt is expected to know.
The same applies to any green belt lean six sigma test offered at the end of a course: check who issues the result before you treat it as a certification. A lean six sigma green belt exam at the end of a course is not the same as ASQ’s proctored exam with a published passing score.

How hard is the Six Sigma Green Belt exam?
ASQ publishes no pass rate, so nobody can tell you from ASQ data how hard the six sigma green belt exam is. What ASQ does publish tells you where the difficulty comes from:
- A scaled passing score of 550 of 750 — a clear bar, but not a fixed percentage of correct answers.
- Statistics: Measure and Analyze cover probability, distributions, capability and hypothesis testing, and questions can require calculation.
- Pace: 110 questions in 4 hours 18 minutes, with looking things up in references eating into that time.
- Breadth: six sections from project selection and team dynamics to design of experiments and SPC.

Six Sigma Green Belt project examples
ASQ does not require a completed project for the Green Belt — only three years of relevant work experience. Projects become a formal requirement at the Black Belt level, where ASQ asks for one completed project with a signed affidavit, or two.
ASQ’s Lean Six Sigma Green Belt classroom course does require participants to bring a management-approved project with a business impact of US$10,000 to US$50,000. To make the DMAIC sections concrete, here are illustrative examples of six sigma green belt projects — our own examples, not ASQ’s:
- Reducing data-entry errors on customer orders: define the defect, measure the error rate, analyse root causes, mistake-proof the form, control with a check sheet.
- Shortening invoice processing time: map the process, separate value-adding steps from waiting, remove a hand-off, track cycle time on a control chart.
- Cutting scrap on a production line: measurement system analysis first, then a designed experiment on two machine settings, then SPC on the chosen setting.

Lean Six Sigma Green Belt project example and how it relates to the exam
A typical lean six sigma green belt project example combines a lean tool with a statistical check — for instance, a 5S or setup-reduction change in Improve, verified with a capability study before and after. Lean six sigma green belt project examples like these mirror how the Body of Knowledge groups lean tools under Improve and Control.
For the exam, project experience helps with scenario questions, but it is not assessed directly. Practise exam-style questions per section to see where you stand. Certsqill’s question bank for this exam has expert-developed questions, an explanation for every answer option and a readiness score per section.
