Six Sigma Green Belt training and courses
ASQ does not require any training for its Six Sigma Green Belt certification — the requirement is three years of work experience and a passed exam. Training is still how most candidates prepare, and ASQ itself sells three options: a 42-hour self-paced CSSGB prep course, a 67-hour Lean Six Sigma Green Belt classroom programme and a 49-hour Lean Six Sigma Green Belt e-learning course.

Do you need Six Sigma Green Belt training to get certified?
Not for ASQ’s credential. The Certified Six Sigma Green Belt (CSSGB) asks for three years of full-time, paid work in one or more areas of the Green Belt Body of Knowledge, and then an open-book exam. No course certificate is part of the application.
That changes how to read the many offers labelled six sigma green belt training and certification. With ASQ, the training and the certification are separate purchases: the course builds the knowledge, and the US$483 exam is what awards the credential. ASQ’s course pages do not say that the exam fee is included.

ASQ Six Sigma Green Belt training: the CSSGB preparation course
ASQ’s own exam-focused option is the Certified Six Sigma Green Belt Certification Preparation course — internet-based, self-paced modules totalling 42 hours, with 365 days of access. It reviews the six sections of the Green Belt Body of Knowledge with a pre-test, a post-test and knowledge checks, and ASQ points out that its practice questions are not actual ASQ exam questions.
As an ASQ Six Sigma Green Belt course it lists at US$824, or US$724 for ASQ members, and it carries 4.2 CEUs. If you want a six sigma green belt certification online course that follows the exam outline closely, this is the one ASQ built for that purpose.

ASQ Lean Six Sigma Green Belt training in the classroom
ASQ’s Lean Six Sigma Green Belt training is a different kind of programme. It is face-to-face, 67 hours long and runs as 10 days in total, five days a month over two months. Participants must bring a management-approved improvement project with a positive business impact of US$10,000 to US$50,000 and devote at least a quarter of their working time to it.
The list price is US$5,749, or US$5,179 for members, and the course carries 6.7 CEUs. At the time of checking, ASQ showed no scheduled offerings. As a lean six sigma green belt training program it is closer to an applied project coaching programme than to exam cramming.

Lean Six Sigma Green Belt online training
For a self-paced alternative, ASQ sells a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt e-learning course: 49 hours of internet-based modules with 365 days of access, at US$1,520 list or US$1,370 for members, carrying 5.5 CEUs.
This is ASQ’s lean six sigma green belt online course for people who cannot attend ten classroom days. Like the classroom version, the course page does not say it includes the CSSGB exam or a certificate.

Six Sigma Green Belt certification course or Lean Six Sigma course?
The names overlap, and that causes confusion. ASQ issues a Six Sigma Green Belt certification but no Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification. A lean six sigma green belt certification course from any provider is therefore a training programme with that provider’s own completion rules.
The good news is that the knowledge overlaps too: ASQ’s Green Belt Body of Knowledge already includes lean principles, lean tools in the Improve phase and lean tools for process control. A green belt lean six sigma course and a six sigma green belt training course both prepare you for much of the same exam content.

How to choose Six Sigma Green Belt certification training
Judge any course — live, recorded or six sigma green belt certification classes in a classroom — against three questions:
- Does it cover all six sections of the ASQ Green Belt Body of Knowledge: overview, Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control?
- Does it include statistics practice? The Measure and Analyze sections cover probability, distributions, measurement system analysis and hypothesis testing.
- Does it say clearly whether the exam fee is included, or is the six sigma green belt certification training sold as preparation only?

Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification training: what you get at the end
With lean six sigma green belt certification training from a provider, the certificate is that provider’s. With ASQ, the credential comes only from the exam. If what you want is a lean six sigma green belt certification training course and an ASQ credential, plan both: the course for the knowledge, the CSSGB exam for the certification.
Some candidates do the reverse: a short lean six sigma green belt training course for orientation, then self-study with the Body of Knowledge and ASQ’s CSSGB Handbook, which ASQ says you may use in the open-book exam.
