What is a Six Sigma Green Belt certification?
A Six Sigma Green Belt is the practitioner level of Six Sigma: someone who works on improvement projects using data, statistics and process tools, usually alongside or under the guidance of a Black Belt. ASQ, the American Society for Quality, describes its Green Belt exactly that way and aims it at professionals with at least three years of work experience.
What is the Six Sigma Green Belt certification from ASQ, then? It is the ASQ Certified Six Sigma Green Belt, or CSSGB — an exam-based credential. You do not earn it by attending a course; you earn it by documenting three years of relevant work and passing ASQ’s exam. That is the main difference from the many training programmes that also hand out a Six Sigma Green Belt certificate.
There is no single body that owns the term “Green Belt”, so the answer to “what is a green belt certification” depends on who issues it. ASQ’s version is the one this page covers, with ASQ’s own rules, fees and exam.

Six Sigma Green Belt certification cost
ASQ publishes its prices on the certification page: the exam fee is US$483, ASQ members save US$100 on the initial examination fee, and each retake costs US$283. ASQ’s application FAQ adds that US$130 of the fee is a non-refundable application fee.
So the six sigma green belt certification cost at ASQ is the exam fee, less the member saving if you join first. Training is optional and comes on top. ASQ’s own self-paced Certified Six Sigma Green Belt Certification Preparation course lists at US$824 (US$724 for members), and its Lean Six Sigma Green Belt classroom course at US$5,749 (US$5,179 for members) — so the Six Sigma Green Belt training cost, not the exam, is usually the larger line in the budget.
There is no separate lean six sigma green belt certification cost to quote from ASQ, because ASQ does not issue that certification; its Lean Six Sigma courses are priced as training. For the green belt–black belt Six Sigma certification comparison: ASQ’s Black Belt exam costs US$585, with retakes at US$385.
- Exam fee: US$483 (ASQ members save US$100 on the first attempt)
- Non-refundable part of the fee: US$130 application fee
- Retake: US$283 per attempt
- Renewal: none — the Green Belt is a lifetime certification

What is the exam format?
The computer-based CSSGB exam is a one-part, 110-question test. ASQ scores 100 of the questions; the other 10 are unscored, and you cannot tell which ones they are. Exam time is 4 hours 18 minutes inside a four-and-a-half-hour appointment. In some locations ASQ also runs a paper-and-pencil exam in Mandarin, with 100 questions in four hours.
ASQ delivers its exams through Prometric, at a test center or by live remote proctoring. The remote option is not available in China, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Pakistan. After you apply you have a 180-day eligibility period, starting with the exam window you picked.
All ASQ exams are open book. References must be bound and stay bound, and ASQ expressly bans collections of questions and answers or refresher-course quizzes in the exam room. ASQ notes that its CSSGB Handbook can be used during the exam.

Six Sigma Green Belt passing score
ASQ publishes the bar: you need 550 points out of a possible 750 to be certified. It is a scaled score, so it does not translate into a fixed number of correct answers. On a computer-based exam you see your result immediately after submitting, and ASQ confirms it by email within a few business days.
If you fail, there is no limit on the number of retakes, but each one costs the retake fee, must happen within two years of your last attempt and cannot be in the same exam window as your first try.

What is on the exam: the Green Belt syllabus
The CSSGB syllabus is ASQ’s Certified Six Sigma Green Belt Body of Knowledge. ASQ’s official preparation course describes it as six sections, and the outline it uses is the DMAIC cycle plus an organisational overview. Lean is part of it: lean principles appear in the overview, lean tools in the Improve section and lean tools for process control in the Control section.
ASQ marks each topic with the highest cognitive level at which it will be tested, so the Body of Knowledge doubles as a list of exam objectives. ASQ does not publish the question count per section on the pages checked for this article; download the Body of Knowledge from the certification page for the full subtext.

Six Sigma Green Belt requirements
ASQ has one requirement, and it is about work, not courses: three years of on-the-job experience in one or more areas of the Green Belt Body of Knowledge, in a full-time, paid role. ASQ grants no educational waivers for this exam, so a degree does not shorten the three years.
Unlike the Black Belt, the Green Belt has no project affidavit requirement, and ASQ does not require any training before you apply. That is how to get the ASQ Six Sigma Green Belt certification in short: check your three years, apply, pick an exam window, pass with 550 points.

Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification: what ASQ offers
Many people search for a lean six sigma green belt certification. ASQ’s Six Sigma catalog lists four certifications — Black Belt, Green Belt, Yellow Belt and Master Black Belt — and no separate ASQ Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification. Lean content is tested inside the CSSGB Body of Knowledge instead.
What ASQ does sell under the Lean Six Sigma name is training. Its Lean Six Sigma Green Belt course is a 67-hour, 10-day face-to-face programme that requires you to bring a management-approved project, and there is a 49-hour e-learning version. The course pages do not say that they include the CSSGB exam or award a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certificate, so treat them as preparation, not as the certification itself.
So what is Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification in practice? Mostly a programme name used by training providers. If you want an exam-based credential from ASQ, the route is a lean six sigma green belt certification program of your choice for the knowledge, and the CSSGB exam for the credential.

Can you take the Six Sigma Green Belt certification online?
Yes, for the exam. ASQ offers live remote proctoring through Prometric in most countries, so a six sigma green belt certification online is possible without visiting a test center. The exceptions are China, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar and Pakistan, where you test at a Prometric center.
Training is where formats differ: self-paced e-learning, live online classes, multi-day classroom courses and intensive boot camp formats all exist, and the green belt six sigma training cost depends on the format and provider. ASQ requires no training at all, so a Green Belt bootcamp is a study choice, not a prerequisite.
For study, ASQ’s Certified Six Sigma Green Belt Certification Preparation course is self-paced e-learning with 42 hours of content and 365 days of access, and ASQ’s Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification online preparation runs as a 49-hour e-learning course. ASQ notes that the practice questions in its prep course are not actual exam questions.

Six Sigma Green Belt certification renewal
There is none. ASQ lists Six Sigma Green Belt among its lifetime certifications and states that they have no recertification requirements. Once you pass, the CSSGB does not expire and there are no renewal fees or recertification units to collect.
That is different from the Black Belt: ASQ’s CSSBB is on the recertification list, with 18 recertification units every three years or a re-examination.

Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt certification?
At ASQ the two differ in scope, prerequisites and upkeep. The Black Belt exam has 165 questions (150 scored) in the same 4 hours 18 minutes, costs US$585, and requires completed projects backed by signed affidavits in addition to work experience. It must be renewed every three years.
The Green Belt needs experience but no project affidavit, costs less and never expires. ASQ positions the Green Belt as working in support of, or under the supervision of, a Black Belt — so if you are not yet leading improvement projects yourself, the Green Belt is the matching level.

Six Sigma Green Belt practice questions and dumps
ASQ sells an official CSSGB Question Bank with sample questions based on the Body of Knowledge, and its prep course includes exam-style practice. Use practice tests to check pace, too: 110 questions in 4 hours 18 minutes is generous, but looking things up in an open-book exam takes time.
Exam dumps are a different matter. ASQ’s testing agreement prohibits sharing exam questions online or in forums and using study materials with questions from past exams or leaked exam material. ASQ can invalidate scores, revoke certifications and ban candidates from future exams.
Certsqill’s Six Sigma Green Belt practice questions are expert-developed: every question explains each answer option, and you see a readiness score for each section of the Body of Knowledge.

They are different things: Lean Six Sigma Green Belt is usually a training programme, while ASQ’s CSSGB is a certification with an experience check and a proctored exam. ASQ publishes no Lean Six Sigma Green Belt salary data either.
What is the best Six Sigma Green Belt certification?
There is no official ranking, and no one body owns the Green Belt name. The same questions are worth asking of any best lean six sigma green belt certification claim.

Apply on asq.org, choose an exam window, then schedule with Prometric at a test center or by live remote proctoring within your 180-day eligibility period. Source: ASQ, checked 10 October 2026.
