ASVAB scores, score range and exam length

Your ASVAB score comes in two forms: standard scores for each subtest and an AFQT percentile from 1 to 99, built from Arithmetic Reasoning, Mathematics Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension and Word Knowledge. The AFQT decides enlistment eligibility, and the minimum varies by branch. The CAT-ASVAB has 135 scored questions and takes about 2 hours on average.

How ASVAB scoring works

ASVAB scoring produces two kinds of numbers, and both appear on your results from the ASVAB. Of score types, the first is the standard score each subtest gets, which has meaning relative to a national sample of youth aged 18 to 23. The AFQT score is computed from the standard scores of four subtests and reported as a percentile.

A percentile is not a percentage of correct answers. An AFQT percentile shows the share of examinees in a reference group who scored at or below your score: an AFQT of 90 means you did as well as or better than 90% of that group.

ASVAB score range

The AFQT score range runs from 1 to 99. The official ASVAB program groups AFQT scores into categories:

  • Category I: 93 to 99
  • Category II: 65 to 92
  • Category IIIA: 50 to 64
  • Category IIIB: 31 to 49
  • Category IVA: 21 to 30
  • Category IVB: 16 to 20
  • Category IVC: 10 to 15
  • Category V: 1 to 9

What is a good ASVAB score?

What is a good score on the ASVAB depends on your goal. There is no single passing score for the ASVAB as a whole: to enlist, you need at least the minimum AFQT of the branch you are joining, and that minimum varies across the services. For a specific job, the subtest standard scores matter as well, because each service sets its own job requirements.

So what are good ASVAB scores in general terms? On the AFQT, categories I and II (65 and above) are the top two categories in the official table. On the subtests, about half the population scores at or above a standard score of 50 and about 16% at or above 60.

Highest ASVAB score and ASVAB high scores

The highest ASVAB score on the AFQT is 99, the top of the percentile scale and of Category I (93 to 99). ASVAB high scores widen your choice of jobs, because job qualifications use the subtest scores on top of the AFQT.

ASVAB average score

The official ASVAB program does not publish a single average AFQT number on the pages checked. What it does publish explains the average score on ASVAB subtests: standard scores are set against a national sample of youth aged 18 to 23, and about half that population scores at or above a standard score of 50. Because the AFQT is a percentile, a score of 50 sits in the middle of the reference group.

Air Force ASVAB scores and the other branches

There is no separate Air Force exam: the AFQT is used to determine enlistment eligibility for the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps. The ASVAB score for Air Force enlistment is the same AFQT, measured against the Air Force minimum.

The official ASVAB site does not list the minimum per branch; it states that the minimum AFQT varies and refers you to recruiters and the service websites. Check the current Air Force minimum on airforce.com or with a recruiter, and do the same for the Army, Navy, Marine Corps or Coast Guard.

How long is the ASVAB test?

The proctored CAT-ASVAB takes about 2 hours on average. The paper-and-pencil version has 149 minutes of testing time, and the whole session, including instructions and administration, takes 3 to 4 hours. The at-home PiCAT takes about 2 to 3 hours and has no time limits on individual subtests.
