ASVAB study guide: how to study for the ASVAB
The best ASVAB study guide follows the official subtests: start with the four AFQT subtests (Arithmetic Reasoning, Mathematics Knowledge, Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension), then the technical subtests your target job needs. The official ASVAB program does not endorse any particular method of test preparation, but it points to free practice tests and sample questions you can use from day one.

How to study for the ASVAB
The official advice on how to study for the ASVAB is short: prepare well in advance, familiarise yourself with the contents of the subtests, take sample questions, review the content areas where your skills need freshening up, and get plenty of rest the night before.
Turned into a plan, ASVAB study looks like this: take a diagnostic across all subtests, rank them by weakness, study the AFQT subtests first, and retest yourself every week or two to see whether the weak areas are moving.

What to study for ASVAB subtests
Plan the time you study for ASVAB subtests by what they measure. The ASVAB covers four domains: verbal, math, science and technical, and spatial. The official program adds that a solid core of math, English and science courses helps, and that technical courses help with Auto Information, Shop Information and Electronics Information.
- Verbal: Word Knowledge (words in context, synonyms) and Paragraph Comprehension (information from written passages)
- Math: Arithmetic Reasoning (word problems) and Mathematics Knowledge (high school math principles)
- Science and technical: General Science, Electronics, Auto, Shop and Mechanical Comprehension
- Spatial: Assembling Objects

Choosing an ASVAB book or ASVAB prep book
The official ASVAB program does not recommend specific commercial study guides, and it states that it does not provide actual test questions to any third-party test preparation service. Any ASVAB book is therefore the publisher’s own material, not real test questions.
When you compare ASVAB study books, check three things: that the book covers all 10 subtests in the official names, that its math practice is meant to be done without a calculator (none is allowed on test day), and that it explains the AFQT as a percentile rather than a percentage. Be skeptical of any ASVAB prep book or service that promises guaranteed results.

ASVAB math study guide
Math is half of the AFQT, so an ASVAB math study guide deserves a dedicated block of time. Arithmetic Reasoning is word problems; Mathematics Knowledge is high school math principles. On the CAT-ASVAB, Arithmetic Reasoning allows 55 minutes for 15 scored questions and Mathematics Knowledge 31 minutes, without tryout items.
Practise without a calculator, write out every step, and keep a list of the problem types you miss. That list becomes the core of your own math review.
