What is AWS Solutions Architect Associate?
AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate is Amazon’s associate-level certification for designing on AWS: choosing services, sizing them, connecting them, and making the trade-offs between cost, resilience and performance. It is the design seat rather than the operations one.
AWS recommends at least one year of hands-on experience before you sit it, and says so through the exam guide — recommended, not required. There is no prerequisite certification, and no training you must attend.

What is the exam format?
The exam is 65 questions in 130 minutes, in multiple-choice or multiple-response form. That is twice the time the foundational exam gets for the same number of questions, which tells you something about the questions: they are scenarios, not definitions.
AWS publishes no pass rate for the exam. The passing score is in the SAA-C03 exam guide rather than on the certification page: results are a scaled score of 100–1,000, the minimum passing score is 720, and scoring is compensatory — you need to pass the exam overall, not each section.
AWS sets no study-hours figure. The one number it does give is the recommended year of hands-on experience.

How much does it cost?
AWS publishes the figure: 150 USD, with local amounts following exchange rates.
An exam voucher is the same seat bought in advance. AWS also gives people who are already certified a 50% discount towards their next exam, so this one is cheaper if you came through the Cloud Practitioner first.

Where can you find practice questions?
This site holds 1,314 practice questions for the exam. Every question shows all options, which one is correct, and why each of the others is wrong — on a design exam, two of the wrong answers usually work, just more expensively or less durably than the right one.
Practice exams, practice tests and sample questions all serve the same need: meeting the exam’s scenario style before exam day.
What you will not find here are dumps. Exam dumps, braindumps, SAA-C03 dump PDFs and cheat sheets all mean recycled live exam content. AWS states that it rotates exam questions regularly, which is why a leaked set ages badly. These questions are written against AWS’s published exam guide instead.
AWS reports a scaled score with a pass mark of 720, so no practice percentage converts directly into that score. What it can tell you is which content area still costs you points.

What study guide and material do you need?
AWS publishes an exam guide that lists the services in scope, runs preparation plans and an official practice exam on Skill Builder, and there is an official study guide for the Associate exam published under the AWS name. Those are the reference points any other study guide should be measured against.
The same goes for books. Check the exam code on the cover: SAA-C03 appears in AWS’s exam guide documents rather than on the certification page, and material advertised with that code is telling you which version it was written for. AWS states that a new service must be generally available for three months before it can appear in questions, so the content does move.

Associate vs Professional is a level question inside the same role. Associate designs; Professional designs at a scale and complexity AWS puts two tiers up, and its exam is longer and harder. AWS sets no requirement to pass the Associate first.

The AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate SAA-C03 exam guide
The current version is the AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate SAA-C03, and its exam guide is now published as a web page in the AWS documentation. It is the closest thing to an AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate exam blueprint: it sets out the target candidate, the scoring and the four content domains.
According to the guide, the exam has 50 scored questions and 15 unscored questions, which you cannot tell apart. Results are reported as a scaled score from 100 to 1,000, and the minimum passing score is 720. Scoring is compensatory: you do not need to pass each domain, only the exam as a whole.

AWS Solutions Architect Associate syllabus: the four domains
AWS does not call it a syllabus, but the domain list in the exam guide is exactly that. Each domain is broken into task statements, and the guide also lists the in-scope and out-of-scope services:
Security is the largest single domain, and cost optimisation runs through the others as well: many scenarios ask for the cheapest design that still meets a requirement. That is why the AWS SAA-C03 exam rewards knowing trade-offs more than knowing feature lists.

How hard is AWS Solutions Architect Associate exam day?
AWS publishes no pass rate, so there is no honest number for how hard the AWS Solutions Architect Associate exam is. What the exam guide does make clear is the level: it is written for someone with at least one year of hands-on experience designing cloud solutions on AWS, and the questions are scenarios with two or more workable answers.
So, is AWS Solutions Architect Associate exam hard for you specifically? For someone who has built on AWS, the challenge is mainly reading precisely — which requirement rules out the otherwise sensible answer. For someone without that experience, AWS’s own advice is to earn AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner first if they have no IT work experience at all.

How much is AWS Solutions Architect exam: fee, taxes and rebooking
The AWS Solutions Architect Associate exam cost is the standard associate-level price in AWS’s FAQ: 150 USD, the same as every associate exam. AWS adds that taxes such as VAT may apply and that some local currencies are offered, so the AWS Solutions Architect Associate exam price on your receipt can differ from the headline figure.
The AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate exam cost applies per attempt, so what you pay overall can be more than one fee. Two rules decide that. You can cancel or reschedule without extra fees up to 24 hours before the appointment, and an exam can only be rescheduled twice. If you miss the appointment, you forfeit the exam fee. A failed attempt costs the full fee again, after a 14-day wait.

Booking the AWS certified solutions architect exam
You register by signing in to aws.training, choosing Certification and booking through your AWS Certification account with Pearson VUE. You can sit it at a Pearson VUE testing centre or as an online proctored exam.
The AWS solutions architect certification exam is offered in English, French (France), Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish (Latin America), Spanish (Spain), Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese. AWS notes that the Italian version will be retired after 31 December 2026.

AWS solutions architect certification path
AWS has two levels for the role. The Associate is the entry point; AWS Certified Professional Solutions Architect — formally AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional — is the next step. Its exam is 75 questions in 180 minutes, costs 300 USD, and AWS recommends two or more years of experience using AWS services to design and implement cloud solutions. AWS lists no formal prerequisite, so passing the Associate first is a choice, not a rule.
The Professional exam is being updated: AWS states that registration for the new version, SAP-C03, opens on 27 October 2026. Earning the Professional also recertifies your Associate automatically. Beyond that, AWS names AWS Certified Security – Specialty as a common next step for solutions architects.

AWS certified solutions architect vs developer
Both are associate-level certifications with the same exam shape: 65 questions, 130 minutes, 150 USD, valid for three years, with about a year of hands-on experience recommended. The difference is the job. AWS describes Developer – Associate as a starting point for people in IT or cloud developer roles, building and deploying applications; the Solutions Architect exam is about choosing and combining services into a design.
