What is AWS Cloud Practitioner?

AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner, often shortened to AWS Cloud Practitioner, is Amazon’s foundational certification, and AWS describes it as validating a broad understanding of the AWS Cloud, its services and its terminology.

AWS positions it as the starting point for people with no prior IT or cloud experience moving into a cloud career, and for people in business roles who need the vocabulary. It is a describing certification rather than a building one, and AWS requires no training before you sit it.

How much does AWS Cloud Practitioner cost?

AWS publishes the figure: 100 USD. Its FAQ states that exams in the business category and at foundational level cost 100 USD, and the certification page repeats it with a pointer to published exam prices, because local amounts follow exchange rates.

An exam voucher is the same seat bought in advance; AWS sells vouchers online for teams and runs a 50% discount on the next exam for people who are already certified.

What is the AWS Cloud Practitioner exam format?

The exam is 65 questions in 90 minutes, in multiple-choice or multiple-response form.

What is the passing score for AWS Cloud Practitioner? 700. The CLF-C02 exam guide reports results as a scaled score of 100–1,000 and sets the minimum passing score at 700. Scoring is compensatory, so you need to pass the exam overall, not each section. Of the 65 questions, 50 count towards your score and 15 are unscored and not identified on the exam. The certification page and FAQs name no figure; the FAQs add that pass marks are set by statistical analysis.

How hard is the AWS Cloud Practitioner exam? AWS publishes no pass rate. What it does publish is the shape of the day — Pearson VUE test centre or online proctoring, results within five business days, and a 14-day wait before a retake if you fail.

The exam is offered in twelve languages. Two of them are going away: AWS states that the Italian and German versions will be discontinued after 31 December 2026, so if you were planning to sit it in German, the date matters.

Where can you find AWS Cloud Practitioner practice questions?

This site holds 1,400 AWS Cloud Practitioner practice questions. Every question shows all options, which one is correct, and why each of the others is wrong — on a 65-question paper, a handful of plausible-looking wrong answers is the whole margin.

You can start free. AWS runs an official practice question set and an official practice exam of its own on Skill Builder; they are a different bank from this one, and there is no reason not to use both.

What you will not find here are AWS Cloud Practitioner dumps, cheat sheets or pdf files sold as exam questions and answers: they mean recycled live exam content. AWS states that it rotates exam questions regularly, which is exactly why a dump ages badly; these questions are written against the published exam guide instead.

AWS reports a scaled score with a pass mark of 700, and 15 of the 65 questions are unscored, so no practice percentage converts directly into that score. What it can tell you is which content area still costs you points.

What AWS Cloud Practitioner study guide and material do you need?

AWS publishes an exam guide that lists the services and features in scope, and runs a four-step preparation plan on Skill Builder with digital courses, Builder Labs, Cloud Quest and an official practice exam. That is the reference point any AWS Cloud Practitioner study guide should be measured against.

The same goes for other study material and books.

One thing worth checking before you buy: the exam code. Codes such as CLF-C01 and CLF-C02 appear in AWS’s exam guide documents rather than on the certification page, which is why material is advertised under a code such as CLF-C02, or CLF-C01 for an older version. Match it against the current exam guide, because AWS states that a new service has to be generally available for three months before it can appear in questions — the content moves.

How long should you study? AWS sets no study-hours figure. Its own preparation plan is a sequence of steps, not a number of weeks.

How long does AWS Cloud Practitioner certification last?

Three years. AWS states it plainly in the FAQ on the certification page, and its certification FAQ repeats it: you recertify every three years.

AWS also gives certificate holders a 50% discount voucher towards the next exam, so recertifying or moving up costs less than the first attempt.

AWS Cloud Practitioner vs Solutions Architect is a level question inside AWS: Cloud Practitioner is foundational and describes the cloud, Solutions Architect Associate is the next tier up and designs on it. AWS sets no requirement to pass the first before the second.

AWS Cloud Practitioner vs AI Practitioner splits by subject rather than level — both are foundational, one covers the AWS cloud broadly and the other artificial intelligence on AWS.

AZ-900 vs AWS Cloud Practitioner crosses vendors: Microsoft’s Azure Fundamentals against Amazon’s foundational exam. Same idea, same entry level, different cloud — so the question is which platform you will be working on, not which exam is easier.

What AWS does publish is the whole cost of entry: 100 USD, 65 questions, 90 minutes, no required training, a 14-day wait after a failed attempt, results in five business days, three years of validity and a 50% discount on the next exam afterwards — and, in its exam guide, the pass mark: 700 on a scale of 100–1,000. For a foundational certification that is an unusually complete picture.

AWS does not use the word syllabus — the exam guide calls it content domains and task statements — but it serves the same purpose. The largest exam topic: AWS Cloud Practitioner candidates get about a third of their scored content from Cloud Technology and Services.

AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner: foundational, not associate

AWS places Cloud Practitioner in its Foundational category. The exam guide describes a target candidate with up to six months of exposure to AWS Cloud design, implementation or operations, and the certification page says the exam is designed for people new to the cloud who may not have an IT background.

The abbreviation you will see most often is CCP, as in the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner (CCP) certification. AWS’s own exam code is CLF-C02.

How to get AWS Cloud Practitioner certification, step by step

The exam is booked through AWS Certification. Cloud Practitioner appointments are delivered by Pearson VUE, at a test centre or online. The route from zero to certified:

• Read the CLF-C02 exam guide and its list of in-scope services.
• Prepare — AWS states training is recommended but not mandatory.
• Sign in to your AWS Certification Account and choose “Schedule New Exam”.
• Choose how to take AWS Cloud Practitioner exam appointments: at a Pearson VUE test centre or online proctored.
• On the day of the AWS Cloud Practitioner test, bring valid government-issued ID and a secondary ID.
• Receive your result within five business days; if you fail, you can retake after 14 calendar days.

Your credential and the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner badge

When you pass, you are an AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner. AWS provides digital badges to offer, in its words, flexible options for recognition and verification — useful for a CV or a professional profile, because an employer can check the credential instead of taking your word for it.

Being certified also unlocks a 50% discount on other AWS Certification exams, according to the certification page. Once certified, AWS Cloud Practitioner holders can therefore take the next exam at half the price.

Essentials is a course, not a certification

There is no AWS Cloud Practitioner Essentials exam and no AWS Cloud Practitioner Essentials certification. AWS Cloud Practitioner Essentials is AWS’s foundational digital course, listed at 12 hours 45 minutes; the certification comes only from passing the exam. A search for “AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner Essentials” mixes the two names.

If you prefer a bootcamp or instructor-led class instead, AWS offers AWS Classroom Training, in person or virtually. Check that any course targets CLF-C02 and covers all four domains.

AWS Cloud Practitioner: recertify or move up

The certification is valid for three years. Before it expires, AWS lists three ways to recertify: pass the latest version of the Cloud Practitioner exam, pass an associate-level or professional-level exam, or complete AWS Cloud Quest: Recertify Cloud Practitioner.

The Cloud Quest route is game-based and needs no exam. When AWS made it generally available in June 2025, it described it as open to people with six months or fewer until their Cloud Practitioner expires, and completing it recertifies you for another three years.

Passing an associate exam also renews Cloud Practitioner. AWS certification rules make that the efficient route if you were planning to move up anyway.

Moving on from AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner: Solutions Architect and other associate exams

The certification page names three associate exams as next steps: Solutions Architect – Associate, Developer – Associate and SysOps Administrator – Associate, which other cloud professionals have earned to advance in cloud architect, cloud engineer, developer and systems administrator roles. None of them requires the Cloud Practitioner certification. AWS sets no such prerequisite, so experienced candidates can go straight to an associate certification. AWS Cloud Practitioner itself remains the entry point for people who need the vocabulary first.

Is an AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner cheat sheet useful?

A one-page summary you write yourself from the exam guide’s task statements is a good revision tool: which service does what, who is responsible for what under the shared responsibility model, which pricing model fits which workload. A sheet sold as containing real exam questions is something else — AWS’s program agreement prohibits using exam content disclosed without its permission.
