The CAPM exam: format, difficulty, passing score and dates
The CAPM exam has 150 multiple-choice questions in 180 minutes, delivered by Pearson VUE at a test center or online. PMI publishes the content outline and the format — but not a passing score and not a pass rate. This page covers what is known, what is not, and how to plan around both.

How many questions is the CAPM exam?
The CAPM exam has 150 multiple-choice questions. Of those, 15 are unscored pretest questions that PMI uses to trial new items, so 135 count towards your result. The pretest items are mixed in and not marked, so every question has to be answered as if it counts.
How long is CAPM exam time? 180 minutes, or three hours — a little over a minute per question if you use all of it. There are no scheduled breaks.

PMI CAPM exam content outline
The scope of the exam is defined by the PMI CAPM Examination Content Outline. The current version is labelled the 2023 Exam Update, and it divides the exam into four domains with fixed weightings:
- Project Management Fundamentals and Core Concepts — 36%
- Predictive, Plan-Based Methodologies — 17%
- Agile Frameworks/Methodologies — 20%
- Business Analysis Frameworks — 27%

CAPM exam content outline 2026: is there a new version?
As of 9 October 2026, the CAPM exam outline PMI publishes is still the 2023 Exam Update, and PMI’s CAPM page announces no new CAPM exam. The PMP exam changed in July 2026; CAPM did not change with it. If you search for the CAPM exam content outline 2026, the 2023 document is the one that applies.

How hard is the CAPM exam?
PMI publishes no difficulty rating, so any answer is about what makes the exam demanding, not a score out of ten. Three features stand out.
First, breadth. The CAPM covers fundamentals, predictive planning, agile and business analysis in one sitting. Many candidates come in strong in one area — often whichever approach their workplace uses — and weak in another.
Second, business analysis. At 27% it carries more weight than either agile or predictive methods, and it is the domain project management courses tend to treat lightly.
Third, stamina and pace. 150 questions in three hours with no scheduled break leaves little time to dwell on any one item.

Is the CAPM exam difficult for beginners?
The CAPM is designed for people without project experience: PMI requires none. So the CAPM exam difficulty is not about having managed projects — it is about knowing the concepts, terms and approaches in the content outline well enough to apply them to short scenarios.
That makes the CAPM test difficulty very dependent on preparation. Is CAPM exam hard? For someone who has covered all four domains and practised under time pressure, it is a manageable exam; for someone who knows only one delivery approach, the gaps show quickly.

CAPM exam passing score
PMI does not publish a CAPM exam passing score. The Handbook states only that the passing score for all PMI exams is determined by sound psychometric analysis. A specific percentage quoted as the passing score for CAPM exam results elsewhere does not come from PMI.
At the end of the exam you see an overall pass or fail result. The Handbook explains that the number of questions you answer correctly also places you in one of the performance rating categories shown on your score report — useful feedback, but not a published cut score.

CAPM pass rate
PMI does not publish a CAPM pass rate. Figures you see for the CAPM passing rate or CAPM exam pass rate on other sites are not PMI data, and we do not repeat them.
The useful question is not how many people pass, but whether you are ready. That is measurable: take a full-length practice exam under real timing and check your results domain by domain against the content outline weightings.

CAPM exam dates 2026 and how scheduling works
There is no fixed CAPM exam calendar to wait for. Once PMI approves your application, a one-year eligibility period starts, and you schedule the CAPM exam with Pearson VUE on a date you choose within it. The Handbook recommends booking as soon as you have picked a date, and at least three months before your eligibility period ends, because PMI cannot guarantee seats or online appointment times.
So the CAPM testing dates in 2026 — or any year — are simply the appointments Pearson VUE has available when you book. If you need to move your appointment, do it early: rescheduling or cancelling within 30 days costs US$70, and within 48 hours of the appointment it is no longer possible.

CAPM testing centers and online delivery
The CAPM is delivered by Pearson VUE. You can sit it at a Pearson VUE CAPM test center — PMI marks this as recommended — or securely online with a remote proctor. Both are proctored, and the exam is not open book: the Handbook lists access to notes or any prohibited aid as grounds for dismissal.

How long does it take to get CAPM certification?
PMI gives no total, because most of it depends on you. The fixed steps are: complete 23 hours of project management education, apply, pay, schedule and pass. The Handbook states that applications are processed in 24 hours or less unless selected for audit, so the waiting time is mostly your own preparation and the next available exam appointment.
How long does CAPM certification take, then? Roughly as long as it takes you to finish the 23 hours, prepare, and get a slot. The upper bound is the eligibility rule: once approved, you have one year and up to three attempts.

How long to study for CAPM
PMI does not publish a recommended study time, and we will not invent one. How long it takes to study for CAPM depends on your starting point: someone who already works with agile teams may need less time on that domain and more on predictive planning and business analysis.
A practical way to set your own timeline: take a timed practice test early, note your weakest domains, study those in proportion to their weight, and book the exam when your practice results are consistent across all four domains — not just high on average.
How to pass the CAPM exam
Passing comes down to a few habits:
- Study by the outline. Use the four domains and their weightings as your checklist; spend roughly a third of your time on fundamentals.
- Do not neglect business analysis — at 27% it outweighs agile and predictive.
- Learn both delivery approaches. Predictive and agile together make up 37% of the exam.
- Practise under real conditions: 150 questions, 180 minutes, no breaks.
- Review every wrong answer and understand why the right option is right.

How long does CAPM certification last?
CAPM runs on a three-year cycle. To keep it, you earn 15 professional development units in each cycle and pay a renewal fee; PMI does not publish the amount of that fee.
