CAPM certification: exam format, requirements and cost
CAPM is PMI’s Certified Associate in Project Management, the entry-level credential below PMP. The exam has 150 questions (135 scored, 15 unscored pretest) in 180 minutes; to apply you need a secondary degree and 23 hours of project management education, and you keep it with 15 PDUs every three years. PMI publishes no single price and no passing score.

What is the CAPM certification?
CAPM stands for Certified Associate in Project Management. It is issued by PMI, the Project Management Institute, and it is the entry point of PMI’s project management track: no project experience is required, only a secondary degree and 23 hours of project management education.
PMI puts it plainly: you do not need experience for CAPM. That makes it the credential for people who want a recognised baseline in project management before they have the years of documented project work that PMP demands.
In the path, CAPM sits directly below PMP. PMI states that an active CAPM certification also fulfils the PMP training requirement, so CAPM is not a dead end: it covers the 35 hours of training you would otherwise need for PMP later.

How much does the CAPM certification cost?
PMI does not publish a single CAPM exam price on the certification page or in the CAPM Handbook. The Handbook states that the fees are subject to membership and regional pricing, that the PMI membership rate applies only to members in good standing, and that membership is not required to obtain the CAPM.
So the answer to “how much is the CAPM exam” depends on two things: whether you are a PMI member and where you are. PMI points candidates to the Certification menu on PMI.org for up-to-date prices, and the binding figure is shown during the application.
Budget for one more line item: the Handbook states that reexamination fees apply to the second and third attempts. PMI does not print that amount in the Handbook either, so a retake should be planned as a separate cost rather than assumed to be free.

What is the CAPM exam format?
The CAPM exam consists of 150 multiple-choice questions. Of those, 15 are unscored pretest questions that PMI uses to trial new items, so 135 questions count towards your result. You cannot tell which ones are pretest items, so every question has to be treated as scored.
You get 180 minutes — three hours — which works out to a little over a minute per question if you use the full time.
Delivery is through Pearson VUE, either at a Pearson VUE testing center, which PMI marks as recommended, or securely online with a remote proctor. Once your application is approved you have a one-year eligibility period and may sit the exam up to three times within it.
On languages, PMI’s own pages disagree: the certification page says the exam is offered in 8 languages but lists more, and the Handbook lists 14. Confirm your language when you schedule rather than relying on a count.

CAPM passing score
PMI does not publish a CAPM passing score. The Handbook states only that the passing score for all PMI exams is determined by sound psychometric analysis, and that each scored question is worth one point. Any specific percentage you see quoted elsewhere does not come from PMI.
For preparation, that has a practical consequence: there is no number to aim for, so aim for consistency across all four domains instead. The weighting below tells you where the 135 scored questions are concentrated, and a weak domain cannot be safely written off when nobody knows how close to the line it leaves you.

What is on the CAPM exam?
PMI publishes the CAPM Examination Content Outline, labelled the 2023 Exam Update, with four domains and fixed weightings. Read the split before you plan: the fundamentals domain alone carries more than a third of the exam, and business analysis — a topic many project management courses treat as a side note — carries 27%, more than either the predictive or the agile domain.
Predictive and agile together account for 37%. CAPM therefore tests both delivery approaches side by side rather than favouring one, and a candidate who knows only waterfall planning or only Scrum vocabulary leaves a large share of the scored questions to chance.
- Project Management Fundamentals and Core Concepts — 36%
- Predictive, Plan-Based Methodologies — 17%
- Agile Frameworks/Methodologies — 20%
- Business Analysis Frameworks — 27%

CAPM prerequisites and eligibility requirements
PMI lists three CAPM requirements: a secondary degree (a high school diploma, GED or global equivalent), being at least 18 years old, and at least 23 hours of project management education completed before the exam. No project experience is required.
The Handbook calls the education requirement 23 contact hours of formal education and specifies who can provide it, including PMI Registered Education Providers (R.E.P.s) and PMI Approved Training Partners (ATPs). Self-directed learning — reading books, watching videos, or sessions with a coach — does not count. PMI also names its own on-demand CAPM Exam Prep Course and an instructor-led CAPM course as ways to meet it.
If you fail three times within the one-year eligibility period, the Handbook requires you to wait one year from your last exam before reapplying.

How long is the CAPM certification valid?
CAPM runs on a three-year cycle. PMI states that CAPM holders need to earn 15 Professional Development Units (PDUs) in each 3-year cycle to maintain the certification, through PMI’s CCR programme.
Fifteen PDUs over three years is a light load compared with PMP, but it is not optional: a credential that is not maintained lapses. Log PDUs as you earn them rather than at the end of the cycle.

CAPM study materials and training
The authoritative scope is PMI’s CAPM Examination Content Outline. Everything else — courses, books, question sets — should be checked against it, because it defines the four domains and their weightings.
PMI itself offers an on-demand CAPM Exam Prep Course and instructor-led CAPM courses (online and in person), both of which also satisfy the 23-hour education requirement. The CAPM Handbook covers the rules: application, eligibility period, scheduling, retakes and certification maintenance.
Since self-study does not count towards the 23 hours, the order matters: complete qualifying education first, then apply, then book the exam within the one-year window.

CAPM vs PMP
CAPM and PMP are both PMI certifications, but they gate on different things. CAPM needs no project experience — a secondary degree and 23 hours of education are enough. PMP requires documented project management experience: five years with a high school diploma, four with an associate’s degree, three with a bachelor’s degree, or two with a degree from a PMI Global Accreditation Center programme, plus 35 hours of training.
The two connect directly. PMI states that an active CAPM certification fulfils the PMP training requirement, so holding CAPM removes the 35-hour training step when you move up. What it does not remove is the experience requirement — that still has to be earned.

CAPM practice questions
Certsqill’s CAPM practice questions come with an explanation for every option, and the bank is weighted the way PMI weights the exam — 36% fundamentals, 27% business analysis, 20% agile, 17% predictive — so your practice time matches where the scored questions are.

How to get CAPM certification, step by step
The Project Management Institute CAPM certification follows a fixed sequence, and doing the steps out of order costs time. Here is the route from first course to CAPM certificate:
- Complete the 23 hours of project management education first. Self-study does not count, so the hours have to come from qualifying education before you apply.
- Submit your CAPM exam application to PMI. The Handbook states that applications are processed in 24 hours or less — unless yours is selected for audit, in which case the audit has to be completed first.
- Pay the exam fee once your application is accepted. Your one-year eligibility period starts when the application is approved.
- Schedule the exam with Pearson VUE, at a test center or online. PMI recommends booking as soon as you have a date, and at least three months before your eligibility period ends.
- Pass the exam and keep the credential with 15 PDUs in each three-year cycle.

CAPM certification requirements in practice
The CAPM certification requirements themselves are short — a secondary degree, age 18 or over, and 23 hours of project management education — and they are listed above. What trips candidates up is the evidence. PMI states that all applications are subject to an audit, although only a percentage are selected, and that refusing to comply with an audit results in an audit failure and a one-year suspension from applying for any PMI certification.
So keep your course certificate and your diploma where you can find them before you submit. The CAPM exam requirements on the day are separate again: the conduct rules of the test center or the online proctor, which the Handbook sets out.

CAPM exam fees, rescheduling and payment
How much does the CAPM exam cost? As covered above, PMI does not print one figure: the CAPM exam fee depends on membership and region and is shown when you pay after acceptance. The Handbook adds that all payments are converted into US dollars and may include additional fees for currency conversion.
Before you register for CAPM exam appointments, know two further costs. If you reschedule or cancel within 30 days of your appointment, PMI charges a fee of US$70. And you must reschedule or cancel before you are within 48 hours of the appointment; if you then miss the exam, the fee is forfeited.
If someone offers you a CAPM exam voucher or discount code, check the amount on PMI’s own payment screen: the PMI CAPM certification cost is paid to PMI directly, after your application is accepted.

Where can I take the CAPM exam?
The CAPM certification test is delivered by Pearson VUE, PMI’s testing partner. You can take the Pearson VUE CAPM exam at a testing center — the option PMI marks as recommended — or securely online with a remote proctor. The CAPM test centers are Pearson VUE centers, so the available CAPM test locations and dates are the ones Pearson VUE offers when you schedule.
The Handbook notes that PMI cannot guarantee seats or online appointment times, which is why it recommends booking early rather than waiting until the end of your eligibility year.

Is the CAPM exam proctored?
Yes, in both formats. At a test center you sit the exam under supervision; online, a remote proctor watches the session. There are no scheduled breaks during the exam.
The CAPM is not open book. The Handbook lists having access to or using notes or any prohibited aid as grounds for dismissal. Calculators and scrap paper may not be brought into the test site; at a center you are given an erasable note board and a marker instead.

Is the CAPM exam changing in 2026?
PMI has announced no CAPM change that we could find. The current CAPM Examination Content Outline is labelled the 2023 Exam Update, and neither the CAPM certification page nor PMI’s “What’s next” page mentions a new CAPM exam, checked 9 October 2026.
The confusion is understandable: PMI did launch a new PMP exam in July 2026. That change applies to PMP, not to the PMI CAPM exam. Before you start studying, check the CAPM certification page and the version label on the content outline.

The CAPM syllabus: what to use as your checklist
The closest thing to an official CAPM syllabus is the Examination Content Outline with its four domains. On its exam prep page PMI says the best way to know what is covered is to review that outline, and it publishes a reference list alongside it, including the PMBOK Guide, the Agile Practice Guide and PMI’s business analysis guides.
Treat the outline as the master list and everything else — courses, books, CAPM exam questions — as material to be checked against it.

CAPM practice test questions from PMI
PMI publishes a short PDF of CAPM sample questions with the correct answers marked. These PMI CAPM sample questions show the question style, but they are a handful of items, not a practice exam.
For a full-length run, PMI sells its own practice products. PMI’s online CAPM Practice Exam gives access to 150 practice questions with immediate feedback on each one. CAPM PMI Study Hall includes a 150-question practice exam that PMI says mirrors the CAPM experience, mini practice exams and flashcards. Either can serve as a CAPM exam simulator: a full PMI CAPM practice exam of 150 questions, sat in one go, is the closest rehearsal of the 180 minutes. If you only have time for one PMI CAPM practice test, take it under real timing rather than question by question.
Whatever you use, the useful part of CAPM practice exam questions is the review afterwards, and that holds for CAPM exam practice questions from any source. Sort your mistakes by domain, because a cluster of wrong answers in one domain matters more than the overall score.

CAPM exam questions and answers PDF files and CAPM dumps
Search for a CAPM exam questions and answers PDF and most of what appears is unofficial. Some files claim to contain real exam items. These CAPM dumps are a risk, not a shortcut.
In the agreement every applicant accepts, candidates agree not to discuss, debrief or disclose the specific content of PMI examination questions. The Handbook states that violations of PMI’s test security policy lead to disciplinary action, up to and including revocation of the certification or permanent suspension from PMI certification exams. A dump is also unreliable on its own terms: nobody can tell you whether its answers are right.

CAPM boot camp or self-paced course?
Whether a provider calls it a boot camp or a bootcamp, the check is the same: does it deliver the 23 hours of project management education PMI requires, from a provider PMI accepts? PMI states that training from its Authorized Training Partners fulfils the 23 contact hours, and PMI’s own on-demand CAPM Exam Prep Course is built to fulfil them too.
A short intensive format suits people who learn best with an instructor and a fixed date. Either way, compare the course content with the four domains of the content outline, because business analysis carries 27% of the exam and is easy to under-teach.

CAPM renewal and the CAPM renewal fee
CAPM renewal runs on a three-year cycle. PMI’s maintenance page sets out the PDU mix for CAPM holders: 15 PDUs per cycle, with a minimum of 9 Education PDUs and a maximum of 6 Giving Back PDUs. You log them in PMI’s online Continuing Certification Renewal System (CCRS).
PMI does not publish the CAPM renewal fee on that page. It states that the certification renewal fee is independent of the PMI membership renewal fee, and that you receive an email with a link to pay when renewal is due.

Advantages of CAPM certification
The main advantage of CAPM certification is access. Unlike PMI’s more senior project management certification, CAPM does not require project experience, so it is open to students, career changers and team members who coordinate projects without the title.
Second, it connects to PMP. PMI states that an active CAPM fulfils the PMP training requirement. Third, PMI lists common paths CAPM-certified professionals can pursue: assistant project manager, project administrator, project analyst, project coordinator and project manager. Whether CAPM is worth it for you depends on which of those roles you are aiming at, and how soon you expect to qualify for PMP.
