CAPM training and courses: what counts, what is free, what to pick

Why CAPM training is part of the requirements

PMI lists at least 23 hours of project management education, completed before the exam, as one of the three CAPM requirements. The CAPM Handbook calls it 23 contact hours of formal education and states that self-directed learning — reading books, watching videos, or sessions with a coach — does not count.

So any CAPM certification course you consider has to answer one question before any other: will PMI accept it as part of your application? A course that teaches the material well but does not count still leaves you short of the requirement.

PMI’s own CAPM prep course

The PMI CAPM course most candidates find first is PMI’s on-demand CAPM Exam Prep Course. PMI describes it as the official prep course for the CAPM exam and states that it fulfils the 23 hours needed to complete the application. PMI lists the course duration as 23 hours, in a self-paced format.

Besides English, PMI lists the course in Brazilian Portuguese, Spanish, German, French and Japanese. If you want a PMI CAPM prep course that leaves no doubt about eligibility, this is the straightforward option — it comes from the organisation that sets the rule.

Instructor-led CAPM certification classes

If you prefer a live CAPM certification class, PMI points to its Authorized Training Partners. PMI states that they provide instructor-led CAPM exam prep worldwide, that all instructors hold a valid CAPM or PMP certification, and that ATP training fulfils the 23 contact hours of project management education requirement.

ATP classes run with virtual instructors or in a physical classroom. PMI’s exam prep page has a finder for Authorized Training Partners, which is the reliable way to confirm a provider before you pay for PMI CAPM training from them.

CAPM certification training online

Most CAPM certification online courses come in two forms: self-paced, like PMI’s on-demand course, or live virtual classes with an instructor. Both can count; the format is not what PMI judges. What matters is who delivers it and whether it amounts to 23 contact hours of formal education.

When you compare a CAPM training course online, check three things: that the provider is one PMI accepts, that you receive proof of the completed hours for your application, and that the content follows PMI’s current CAPM Examination Content Outline with its four domains.

The CAPM 23 hours online course: what to check

Many providers advertise a CAPM 23 hours online course. The number matches PMI’s requirement, but the label alone proves nothing. PMI accepts the hours only as formal education from an eligible provider; the Handbook names PMI’s training partners among the eligible providers and excludes self-directed learning.

Keep the completion record. PMI states that all applications are subject to audit, and if yours is selected, you will need to show where your 23 hours came from.

CAPM bootcamp or self-paced course?

A CAPM bootcamp compresses the education into a few intensive days with an instructor; a self-paced course spreads it over weeks. Whether it is sold as a CAPM certification boot camp or a CAPM certification bootcamp, PMI applies the same test as to any other training: eligible provider, 23 contact hours.

A boot camp suits people who learn best with a fixed date and a live instructor, and who can block out the time. Self-paced suits people fitting study around work. Neither format is better for the exam itself — the content outline is the same.

There is no official ranking, and we do not name course companies. The best CAPM course for you is the one that meets these criteria:

• It counts: delivered by a provider PMI accepts, with a certificate of 23 contact hours.
• It follows the current outline: Project Management Fundamentals and Core Concepts 36%, Business Analysis Frameworks 27%, Agile Frameworks/Methodologies 20%, Predictive, Plan-Based Methodologies 17%.
• It gives business analysis real weight — at 27% it is the second-largest domain and easy to under-teach.
• It includes practice questions with explanations, not just lectures.
• Its format fits your schedule, so you actually finish it before your eligibility year runs.

Best CAPM prep course: training versus practice

A CAPM prep course and CAPM practice are different jobs. The course covers the 23 hours and teaches the content; practice tests whether you can apply it under exam conditions. The best CAPM prep course is the one that does the first job properly — then add a practice exam for the second.

Free CAPM training and free CAPM courses

Finding CAPM training free of charge is easy; finding free training that counts is harder. You will find free CAPM courses and free CAPM training videos online, and they can be useful for learning, but check before you count on them: PMI excludes self-directed learning such as watching videos, so a free CAPM course only helps with the requirement if it is formal education from a provider PMI accepts and gives you proof of the hours.

The same applies to a CAPM 23 hours online course free of charge. If it does not come with a record PMI will accept in an audit, treat it as study material, not as your 23 hours.

Is there a free CAPM certification?

No. Free CAPM certification does not exist: the credential comes only from PMI, and PMI requires the exam fee once your application is accepted. What you can sometimes get free is preparation material — not the certification and not, automatically, the 23 qualifying hours.

Is there a CAPM practice test free of charge?

PMI’s free option is its sample questions PDF: a handful of CAPM practice questions, free, with the correct answers marked. It shows the style of the questions but is far too short to measure readiness.

Be careful with sites that offer a free CAPM practice exam claiming to contain real questions. Candidates agree not to disclose the content of PMI exam questions, and the Handbook allows sanctions up to revocation of the certification. Free CAPM exam questions that are written as original practice are fine; leaked ones are not, and you cannot check whether their answers are right.

PMI’s paid CAPM practice exams

For a full-length rehearsal, PMI sells two products. The first is a PMI authorized online CAPM practice exam in the plainest sense — sold by PMI itself — with access to 150 practice questions and immediate feedback on each one. PMI lists its duration as three hours.

The second is CAPM PMI Study Hall, which includes one 150-question practice exam that PMI says mirrors the CAPM experience, three 10-question mini practice exams, 50 additional practice questions and flashcards, with three months of access.

Is the CAPM exam online?

Yes, if you choose. PMI offers the CAPM exam at a Pearson VUE testing center, which it marks as recommended, or securely online with a remote proctor. The CAPM online test has the same 150 questions and 180 minutes as the test-center version.

Do not confuse this with a CAPM test online offered by a course provider: that is a practice exam. The real exam is booked only through PMI and Pearson VUE after your application is accepted.
