PMI says the best way to know what is covered on the CAPM exam is to review the exam content outline. The current version is the 2023 Exam Update, and it is the scope of every question:

A CAPM study plan built on the domain weights

PMI does not publish a recommended number of study hours, so this CAPM exam study plan is built on proportions rather than a fixed calendar. Split your time roughly in line with the weights: about a third on fundamentals, a quarter on business analysis, and the rest across agile and predictive methods.

• Phase 1 — Baseline: complete your 23 hours of qualifying education, then take a short timed practice set to see where you stand in each domain.
• Phase 2 — Domain study: work through the outline domain by domain, starting with the weakest of the heavily weighted ones.
• Phase 3 — Mixed practice: switch to mixed question sets so you learn to recognise which domain a scenario is testing.
• Phase 4 — Full rehearsal: sit at least one full 150-question practice exam in 180 minutes without a break, then review every mistake.
• Book the exam when your results are consistent across all four domains, not just high on average.

How to study for the CAPM exam

How to study for CAPM depends on where you start, but the same principles apply to everyone. Study actively: after each topic, answer questions on it rather than rereading notes. Learn the vocabulary precisely — many questions turn on the difference between similar terms. And keep predictive and agile side by side, because the exam tests both approaches and expects you to know when each fits.

Studying for CAPM also means studying business analysis properly. At 27% it is the second-largest domain, and it is the one candidates with a pure project management background most often underestimate.

Guides written as “how to study for CAPM exam 2025” still apply in 2026: PMI’s outline remains the 2023 Exam Update, so the domains and weights have not moved.

CAPM prep book or study guide: how to choose

PMI’s reference list also includes books from other publishers. We do not name or rank them. Whatever CAPM prep book, CAPM study book or CAPM certification study guide you consider, judge it against the outline: does it cover all four domains, does it give business analysis a weight close to 27%, and is it written for the 2023 Exam Update rather than an older version of the exam?

A CAPM preparation book is best used as a structured route through the material; it does not replace practice questions. Pair it with timed practice so you know whether what you read has stuck.

If you are looking for a free CAPM study guide, start with what PMI gives away. The CAPM Examination Content Outline, the CAPM Handbook and a short PDF of sample questions are free downloads from PMI, and the PMBOK Guide is free for PMI members. Together they are the most reliable CAPM free study guide you can get: the scope, the rules and the question style, straight from the exam owner.

Be careful with any CAPM study material PDF free download that claims to contain real exam questions. Candidates agree not to disclose the content of PMI exam questions, and the Handbook allows sanctions up to revocation of the certification. Beyond the rules, you cannot check whether such files are correct.

CAPM Study Hall

PMI CAPM Study Hall is PMI’s own practice product. PMI describes it as an all-in-one study companion and lists one full-length 150-question practice exam that mirrors the CAPM experience, three 10-question mini practice exams, 50 additional practice questions and digital flashcards, with three months of access.

Its value is in the later phases of your plan: the full-length exam for a realistic rehearsal, the mini exams and extra questions for targeted CAPM exam prep questions on weak areas.

PMI CAPM exam prep courses

For the qualifying 23 hours, PMI offers its on-demand CAPM Exam Prep Course, and its Authorized Training Partners run instructor-led CAPM certification exam prep, virtually or in a classroom. Both fulfil the education requirement, according to PMI. A CAPM study guide supports that training; it does not replace it, because self-study does not count towards the 23 hours.

Free CAPM exam prep

Free CAPM exam prep is possible for the study part, not for the requirement. The content outline, the Handbook, PMI’s sample questions and — for members — the PMBOK Guide cost nothing. CAPM test prep free of charge from other sources can help too, as long as it is original practice material rather than leaked exam content.

The 23 hours of education and the exam fee are the parts you cannot get around with free material.

Is the CAPM exam open book?

No. The Handbook lists having access to or using notes or any prohibited aid as grounds for dismissal, and calculators and scrap paper may not be brought into the test site. At a test center you receive an erasable note board instead. Prepare to recall everything — definitions, process steps, agile roles — without looking it up.

How to prepare for the CAPM exam in the final weeks

In the last stretch, shift from learning to rehearsing. Take full 150-question practice exams in 180 minutes, review every wrong answer, and go back to the outline for any domain where your results dip. Schedule your appointment early; PMI recommends booking at least three months before your eligibility period ends, because it cannot guarantee seats.
