CFP certification requirements

The CFP certification requirements are education, exam, experience and ethics. You need financial planning coursework through a CFP Board Registered Program before the exam and a bachelor’s degree by five years after passing, then 6,000 hours of professional experience (or 4,000 as an apprentice), an Ethics Declaration and a background check. CFP Board puts the typical process at 18 to 24 months.

How to become CFP certified: the four requirements

CFP Board groups the requirements for CFP certification into four parts, and many steps can run in parallel. If you are working out how to get a CFP certification, start with the education requirement, because it is the only one that must be finished before you can sit the exam.

  • Education: Registered Program coursework plus a bachelor’s degree or higher in any discipline
  • Exam: pass the 170-question CFP exam
  • Experience: 6,000 hours (Standard Pathway) or 4,000 hours (Apprenticeship Pathway)
  • Ethics: sign the Ethics Declaration and pass CFP Board’s background check

CFP education requirements

The education requirements for CFP certification have two parts. First, college-level financial planning coursework, taken as the classes of a CFP Board Registered Program and covering eight Principal Knowledge Domains with 70 topic areas in total and ending with the Financial Plan Development (Capstone) course, where you develop and present a comprehensive financial plan. CFP Board puts the average time for the coursework at 12 to 18 months.

Second, a bachelor’s degree or higher in any discipline from an accredited college or university. The degree can be completed before you pass the exam or within five years after. These are the CFP course requirements in practice: the coursework is about content and the Capstone, not about a specific major.

Credit for prior coursework and credentials

Transcript Review lets you ask CFP Board to credit Principal Knowledge Topics you already covered in courses outside a Registered Program, at a regionally-accredited U.S. institution. The fee is $250, credit is not guaranteed, and the Capstone cannot be credited this way.

The Accelerated Path is for holders of certain credentials, who meet the coursework requirement by documenting the credential and completing the Capstone course through a Registered Program. CFP Board lists:

  • CPA
  • CFA
  • CIMA
  • CLU and ChFC
  • Licensed attorney
  • Ph.D. in financial planning, finance, business administration or economics
  • International CFP certification

CFP exam requirements

The CFP exam prerequisites are short: your coursework must be complete and verified. You can register before you finish, but CFP Board must receive proof of completion by the education verification deadline of your chosen window, or you cannot sit. The bachelor’s degree and the experience are not exam prerequisites.

CFP experience requirements

The CFP hours requirement is 6,000 hours of professional experience related to the financial planning process on the Standard Pathway, or 4,000 hours on the Apprenticeship Pathway, which carries additional requirements. Experience can come before or after the exam but must fall within 10 years before and 5 years after you pass.

CFP Board has announced changes from Q4 2027: Standard Pathway candidates must show experience in at least three steps of the financial planning process, and up to 500 hours of qualified pro bono financial planning may count towards the 6,000 hours.

Ethics, background check and the final steps

The last requirement is ethics: you sign the Ethics Declaration, CFP Board runs a background check, and its Fitness Standards may affect whether you can be certified. As a CFP professional you commit to act as a fiduciary when giving financial advice.

How to get a CFP license, as many people put it, then comes down to the final steps: once everything is met, you pay a non-refundable $250 application fee and a prorated part of the $575 annual certification fee within six months. If you finish more than 12 months after passing the exam, pre-certification CE requirements also apply. In CFP Board’s own terms, the CFP license requirements are certification requirements, set and checked by CFP Board.

CFP continuing education requirements

The CFP CE requirements apply every two-year reporting period: currently 30 hours, including a 2-hour pre-approved CFP Board Ethics course. CFP Board has announced an increase to 40 hours every two years (2 hours of ethics and 38 of general CE), with up to 10 hours carried over to the next cycle.

CFP Board’s pages are not consistent on when this starts: the January 2026 announcement says the effective date moved from Q1 2027 to Q4 2027 as of September 1, 2026, while the CE requirements page still refers to Q1 2027. Check your own renewal cycle in your CFP Board account.
