CFP study guide: materials, study plan and study time

The best CFP study guide starts with what CFP Board publishes: the eight exam domains and their weights, the provided tax tables and formulas, a study strategy guide, a study calendar for each window and a full-length practice exam included with registration. On study time, CFP Board says you cannot cram, and almost 80% of passers studied 11 hours or more a week.

Official CFP exam study materials

CFP Board’s own CFP exam study materials are free to download from cfp.net or come with your registration. Use them as the backbone of any CFP exam study guide, because they define what is tested and what you get on exam day:

  • CFP Exam Candidate Handbook: format, rules, domains and policies
  • How To Build a CFP Exam Study Strategy guide
  • Study calendars for exam windows, such as the November 2026 calendar
  • Tax tables and formulas that are provided during the exam
  • Key Elements summaries of tax laws, including the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, the SECURE Act, SECURE 2.0 and the One Big Beautiful Bill Act
  • CFP Board Practice Exam I, included with registration
  • A candidate forum, study group forum and mentor program

Free study material for CFP

If you are looking for free CFP study materials, the official ones are the obvious start. Practice Exam I, a full-length 170-question exam built from retired questions, is included with your exam registration; Practice Exam II costs $225. The handbook, the study strategy guide, the study calendars and the tax tables and formulas are published on cfp.net.

Be careful with free PDFs from unknown sources: tax figures change every year, and CFP Board publishes which tax year each window tests (2026 for the July and November 2026 and March 2027 windows). Outdated numbers cost points.

CFP books and course material

Your CFP course material from the Registered Program is your main textbook set. The CFP Board pages we checked do not name an official CFP Board textbook, and we do not recommend publishers. Whatever CFP books you use, check that they follow the eight Principal Knowledge Domains and the tax year of your window.

Study material for CFP exam prep should be weighted like the exam. Retirement savings and income planning (18%), investment planning (17%), general principles (15%) and tax planning (14%) make up almost two thirds of the questions:

  • A. Professional Conduct and Regulation — 8%
  • B. General Principles of Financial Planning — 15%
  • C. Risk Management and Insurance Planning — 11%
  • D. Investment Planning — 17%
  • E. Tax Planning — 14%
  • F. Retirement Savings and Income Planning — 18%
  • G. Estate Planning — 10%
  • H. Psychology of Financial Planning — 7%

Your CFP exam study plan

CFP Board’s strategy guide builds a study plan around five ideas: learn with intention, know what is on the test, choose your tactics such as review courses, practice exams and flashcards, create a supportive environment, and follow your plan. Its study calendar adds two rules: make time for all eight domains, and block off time for review before the exam.

A practical CFP exam study plan from those rules: take a practice exam early to find gaps, schedule every domain between now and exam day even if you feel confident, and plan smaller study blocks across the week rather than only long weekend sessions. Leave the final weeks for timed, full-length practice.

How long does it take to study for the CFP?

CFP Board does not publish a total number of hours. What it does publish: you cannot cram for the CFP exam in a few weeks and expect to succeed, and almost 80% of exam passers say they spent 11 hours or more studying every week. Its study calendar for the March 2026 exam started in December 2025.

So for how long to study for CFP, plan your CFP study time in weeks of at least 11 hours, and count backwards from your exam window. To study for CFP alongside a full-time job, CFP Board’s advice is to ask your employer, family and friends for support and to balance studying with self-care.

The CFP compensation study is not a study guide

Searches for the CFP compensation study usually mean CFP Board’s 2026 Compensation Study, announced in June 2026 and based on 1,624 responses to an online questionnaire sent in January 2026 to CFP professionals and financial planners without the certification. CFP Board summarised it under the headline that CFP professionals earn 11% more and report high career satisfaction. It is career research, not exam preparation material.

To check your readiness during your CFP study, Certsqill’s question bank has expert-developed questions, an explanation for every answer option and a readiness score per domain.
