CFP courses: required coursework, review courses and CE

There are two kinds of CFP course. The required one is the coursework of a CFP Board Registered Program, which ends with a 45-hour Capstone course and must be finished before you can sit the exam. The optional one is a CFP exam review course, which CFP Board says many candidates find helpful but does not endorse. After certification, CFP continuing education courses keep your credential current.

The CFP certification education program

A CFP certification program in CFP Board’s sense is a Registered Program: financial planning coursework at a regionally-accredited college or university that meets CFP Board’s criteria for the coursework requirement. Only this coursework counts towards certification; a review course does not replace it.

You can take the coursework as an undergraduate or graduate financial planning degree in a registered program, or as a certificate-level CFP certification course if you already have a degree or are studying another field. CFP Board puts the average time for the coursework at 12 to 18 months.

What the coursework covers

Every CFP certification education program has to cover CFP Board’s Principal Knowledge Topics: eight domains with 70 topic areas in total, from professional conduct and regulation to the psychology of financial planning. That is also the blueprint of the exam, so the coursework is your first pass through everything that is tested.

The CFP capstone course

The CFP capstone course is the last part of the coursework: a 45-hour financial plan development course in which you develop and present a comprehensive financial plan. It must be taken through a Registered Program, and Registered Programs must submit their Capstone syllabi and assessment rubrics to CFP Board.

Accelerated Path candidates who already meet the experience requirement can take the Capstone Alternative instead: no contact hours, just a final project in which you build and present a financial plan covering education, risk management and insurance, investment, tax, retirement and estate planning.

CFP exam review course or CFP review class

A CFP exam review course is optional preparation after the coursework. CFP Board says many candidates find a review course helpful, and exam takers it surveyed named a review course one of the most helpful tools. Formats include classroom, online and self-study, so a CFP exam review class can be live or a self-paced CFP prep course.

CFP Board lists some review course providers but states that these courses and their providers are not endorsed or recommended by CFP Board. A CFP review course, whatever its marketing, is not part of the certification requirements.

Online CFP classes

For review courses, CFP Board confirms that online formats exist. For the required coursework, CFP Board’s pages we checked do not specify delivery formats or prices of Registered Programs, so whether you can take the coursework as CFP online courses depends on the program. Check that any program you choose is registered with CFP Board before you enroll.

What is the best CFP course?

CFP Board does not rank or endorse courses, and neither do we. A useful way to judge the best CFP course for you, or the best online CFP course, is to ask four questions:

  • Is it a CFP Board Registered Program? Only that coursework satisfies the education requirement.
  • Does it cover all eight Principal Knowledge Domains in proportion to their exam weight?
  • Does a CFP exam prep course include full-length, timed practice with case studies of 8 to 12 questions?
  • Does it show your results per domain, so you know where to spend the remaining weeks?

CFP continuing education courses

After certification, CFP continuing education courses count only if they address CFP Board’s Principal Knowledge Topics and are designed to be at least 50 minutes long. CFP Board’s CE program search can be filtered by topic, sponsor and delivery format (live or self-study), and the 2-hour Ethics CE must be a CFP Board-approved program. Submitting a non-registered course costs a $60 non-refundable reporting fee.

For exam preparation, Certsqill’s CFP question bank has expert-developed questions, an explanation for every answer option and a readiness score per domain, alongside whichever course you take.
