What is CISSP certification?
The CISSP, Certified Information Systems Security Professional, certification is issued by ISC2. In one line, it is the credential for people who design and run a security programme rather than operate one part of it.
CISSP stands for Certified Information Systems Security Professional, and in practice it means architect-level breadth. What is the certification meant to prove? That you can design and run an organisation’s whole security programme, not one tool in it, which is why ISC2 asks for five years of experience on top of the exam. What it stands for is that combination: exam plus verified years.
The full name is often typed as certified information system security professional, with system in the singular. ISC2 writes Systems. Same certification; the plural is the official name.
It is ANAB-accredited to ISO/IEC 17024 and approved by the U.S. Department of Defense under DoDM 8140.03 — two things most security certifications cannot claim, and the reason CISSP appears in job requirements by name. ISC2 does not publish on the certification page how many people hold the CISSP worldwide, so this page names no headcount. On its separate CISSP salary page, ISC2 reports a global median salary of US$127,000 for CISSP holders, based on its latest Cybersecurity Workforce Study, and states that this should not be considered a guaranteed or estimated salary for all candidates earning the CISSP (checked 10 October 2026).

What are the CISSP requirements and prerequisites?
The CISSP certification requirements are experience, not exams. ISC2 requires at least five years of cumulative paid work experience before it grants the certification. That experience requirement is what separates it from certifications you can sit on day one.
The CISSP exam prerequisites are none: you may take the exam before you have the years. Pass without the experience and ISC2 makes you an Associate of ISC2 until you can document it — up to six years for CISSP. In practice: sit the exam whenever, get certified when the experience is there.
How long does it take to get CISSP certified? The exam is a day, the experience is five years, and the endorsement step after passing adds a few weeks.

What is the CISSP exam format?
ISC2 lists the CISSP exam as 3 hours with 100 to 150 items, in multiple choice and advanced item types. The item count is a range rather than a fixed number because the exam is adaptive. It is available in English, Chinese, German, Japanese and Spanish.
The CISSP passing score is published, which is unusual: at least 700 out of a possible 1,000 points.
How hard is the CISSP exam? ISC2 answers with a bar rather than a pass rate — it publishes none — but naming the bar at all is more than most issuers do. There is no official figure for how long to study either; ISC2 sets no study-hours number.
The exam covers eight domains: Security and Risk Management, Asset Security, Security Architecture and Engineering, Communication and Network Security, Identity and Access Management, Security Assessment and Testing, Security Operations, and Software Development Security. Domain 1 also holds concepts such as due care vs due diligence.
CISSP exam booking runs through ISC2 and Pearson VUE. The CISSP retake policy is set out in ISC2’s exam policies rather than on the certification page.

How much does CISSP cost?
ISC2 publishes no flat figure for the exam. The CISSP exam cost depends on your region — the ISC2 site carries a currency selector, and the binding amount appears when you register. Checked on the certification page, the exams pages and the registration page on 24 September 2026: none of them names an amount.
A page that answers the exam fee or a voucher price with a single worldwide number is stating something ISC2 does not.
What ISC2 does publish is the cost of keeping it. The CISSP annual maintenance fee is US$135 a year for members holding CISSP, and US$50 a year for Associates of ISC2.
Source: ISC2 — Annual maintenance fees. Checked 24 September 2026.
What are the CISSP CPE requirements?
ISC2 requires 120 CPE credits over each three-year certification cycle to keep a CISSP. Each cycle lasts three years and is renewed by CPE and the annual fee.
ISC2 splits credits into Group A and Group B and sets a suggested annual pace; the detail sits in the ISC2 Certification Maintenance Handbook. CPE courses are one way to earn them, not the only way.
There is a 90-day grace period after a cycle ends. Miss it and ISC2 suspends the certification, with reinstatement rules of its own.

Where can you find CISSP practice questions?
This site holds 1,200 CISSP practice questions. Every question shows all options, which one is correct, and why each of the others is wrong — on an exam scored out of 1,000 points, knowing why a plausible answer fails is the part that moves the score. All eight domains are covered, so you can see where the gap is.
The point of practice questions is to meet ISC2’s phrasing before exam day.
There are free CISSP practice questions here to start with. ISC2 sells its own official CISSP practice tests, and ISC2 practice questions come with its study products; this bank is separate from those.
What you will not find here are CISSP dumps, braindumps or pdf files of exam questions and answers: all of them mean recycled live exam content. These questions are written against ISC2’s published exam outline instead.
One caution about any CISSP exam questions you find: the exam is scored on a 1,000-point scale, so no practice percentage converts into an ISC2 score. What practice can tell you is which of the eight domains you are weak in, which is why every question here carries an explanation.
What CISSP study material and books do you need?
The ISC2 CISSP official study guide is the reference most candidates start from, and ISC2 publishes the exam outline that defines what is in scope. Whether it is listed as the 10th edition or the latest edition, it is the same line of ISC2 material.
Other study guides, books, audiobooks and online courses all point at the same eight domains.
This site is not a study guide for CISSP certification and does not resell one. It is the practice layer on top — the part a book cannot do, which is asking you the question and telling you why your answer was wrong.

CISM vs CISSP, CCSP and the other comparisons
CISM vs CISSP is the comparison people search most. The short version from the issuers’ own framing: CISSP is ISC2’s broad practitioner-to-architect certification across eight security domains, CISM is ISACA’s management-focused credential. CISA vs CISSP puts audit against security design; which of the three is harder depends on which chair you sit in rather than on any published rate. Neither issuer publishes a CISM vs CISSP salary comparison, so this page states none. CISSP vs CRISC puts design against risk; CISSP vs CISM vs CISA is the three-way version.
CCSP vs CISSP stays inside ISC2: CCSP is the cloud-specific certification, CISSP the general one. SSCP vs CISSP is the same family one level down, without the five-year requirement. CSSLP vs CISSP adds secure software development. The concentrations sit above CISSP and assume you hold it: ISSMP, ISSEP and ISSAP are choices between management, engineering and architecture once the base certification is done. CGRC vs CISSP swaps breadth for governance, risk and compliance.
Outside ISC2 and ISACA the comparisons get further apart. CASP vs CISSP, CySA vs CISSP and SecurityX vs CISSP line CompTIA’s advanced security track up against it; CISSP vs CEH puts design against offensive testing; CISSP vs OSCP the same, one step harder on the offensive side. GIAC vs CISSP, including GSEC, GICSP and GISP, compares a vendor-neutral architecture credential with SANS’s narrower technical ones. CISSP vs CCNA, CCNP or CCIE compares security with networking, which is a career question, not a ranking. PMP vs CISSP compares security with project delivery. CISO vs CISSP and CCISO vs CISSP compare a job title with a certification. CISSP alternatives exist in every one of those directions; none of them replaces another, and ISC2 does not position them as alternatives.

Is CISSP worth it?
ISC2 does not answer that question, and this page will not decide it for you. What is verifiable: CISSP is ANAB-accredited to ISO/IEC 17024 and approved under U.S. DoDM 8140.03, which is why it appears by name in job and contract requirements. Against that stand five years of required experience, an exam ISC2 publishes no pass rate for, 120 CPE credits per cycle and US$135 a year. Source: ISC2, checked 24 September 2026.
How many CISSP practice questions does Certsqill have?
1,200 for the CISSP exam, each with an explanation for every option — the correct one and the wrong ones.
What is the CISSP exam, and what is the CISSP certificate?
The two are easy to mix up. What is CISSP exam day? The test you sit. What is CISSP certificate status? What ISC2 grants once you have passed that test and documented the required experience. So if you are asking what is CISSP cert in practical terms: it is membership of ISC2 as a certified CISSP, which ISC2’s own page describes as making you an ISC2 member.
That is also the honest answer to the CISSP certification meaning: the letters stand for passing an ISC2 CISSP exam plus verified years of work, and keeping both current afterwards.

CISSP exam registration, step by step
CISSP exam registration starts with an ISC2 account and is completed through Pearson VUE, which schedules and delivers ISC2 exams. ISC2 publishes the account steps, Pearson scheduling and the deadlines for rescheduling or cancelling on its exam scheduling page.
A sensible order if you want to register for CISSP exam day:
- Create or sign in to your ISC2 account and check that your name matches your ID — ISC2 has a name matching policy.
- Choose the CISSP exam and continue to Pearson VUE to pick a location, date and time.
- Pay the fee shown for your region; ISC2 prices by region and shows the binding amount at registration.
- Read the exam agreement and the rescheduling and cancellation deadlines before you confirm.

Where to take CISSP exam: Pearson VUE
If you are wondering where can I take the CISSP exam: the CISSP exam at Pearson VUE is the standard route. ISC2 states that you get unofficial results at the Pearson VUE test center and that ISC2 emails your official results afterwards.
The list of available test centers and dates appears when you schedule through Pearson VUE, so that is where to take the CISSP exam is answered for your location. ISC2 lists the details under “Where to Take Your Exam” on its scheduling page.

CISSP exam time and the latest edition of the outline
The CISSP exam time is three hours, with 100 to 150 items in multiple choice and advanced item types. Plan for the full three hours; the exam is adaptive, so you cannot tell from the item count alone how you are doing.
The CISSP latest edition of the exam outline is the one effective from 15 April 2024, as shown on ISC2’s outline page on 9 October 2026. It lists the eight domains and their subdomains, and it is the syllabus for the exam — any study material should be written against this version.

How to think like a manager for the CISSP exam
A common piece of advice from people who have passed is to think like a manager rather than a technician. It is advice, not an ISC2 rule, but it reflects how the exam is built: CISSP is aimed at people who design and run a security programme, so many questions ask what should happen first, or what matters most to the organisation, rather than which command fixes a problem.
In practice that means reading each question for the role you are being asked to play, and preferring answers that address risk, policy and business needs before a technical fix. Practising with explanations for every option is the fastest way to learn the pattern.
A CISSP exam cram: what the last days are for
A CISSP exam cram — a short, intense final review — is useful for refreshing what you already know across the eight domains. The final days are the time for an exam cram; CISSP domains you have never studied need weeks, not days, because the exam is broad and the outline is long.
Use the final days to revisit your weakest domains, reread the explanations for questions you missed, and take one timed run to get used to three hours of concentration. If a whole domain is still weak, moving the date is usually the better decision.

CISSP training, boot camp or self-study?
ISC2 offers its own CISSP training in two formats: online self-paced, with 90-day or 180-day access, and online instructor-led live classes taught by an ISC2 authorised instructor, on full-time or part-time schedules. No training is required to sit the exam.
A boot camp from any provider compresses the eight domains into a short, intensive block. Before paying for a bootcamp, check that it teaches the outline effective from 15 April 2024, covers all eight domains of the syllabus, and includes timed practice questions with explanations rather than only lectures.

CISSP associate certification: Associate of ISC2
There is no separate CISSP associate certification exam. If you pass the CISSP exam without the five years of experience, ISC2 makes you an Associate of ISC2 and gives you up to six years to gain it. The annual maintenance fee for Associates is US$50.
Once you can document the experience, you complete the endorsement process and become a CISSP. Until then, describe yourself as an Associate of ISC2 — not as CISSP-certified.
Source: ISC2 — Membership policies and procedures. Checked 24 September 2026.
CISSP certification renewal: how keeping it works
CISSP renewal is continuous rather than a single exam. Over each three-year cycle you earn 120 CPE credits and pay the annual maintenance fee of US$135; if you miss the end of the cycle there is a 90-day grace period before ISC2 suspends the certification.
The CISSP renewal requirements are therefore CPE plus fee. When people ask about the CISSP renewal cost or the CISSP renewal fee, the figure ISC2 publishes is that annual maintenance fee: US$135 a year for CISSP holders.
Source: ISC2 — Membership policies and procedures. Checked 24 September 2026.
CISSP CPE training and courses
CISSP CPE training does not have to be a course. ISC2 counts a range of professional activities towards CPE, with the detail in its Certification Maintenance Handbook. Courses are one convenient way.
ISC2 lists its own self-paced certificates, courses and express courses for continuing professional development on the CISSP page. CISSP CPE courses from ISC2 are not the only option, but they are a simple one to document.

CISSP certification verification
Employers who want to verify CISSP certification can use ISC2’s member verification service at isc2.org/member-verification. That is the reliable CISSP certification check: it comes from the issuer, not from a CV or a badge image.
It also answers the occasional search for how to buy CISSP certificate without exam. There is no legitimate way: ISC2 grants CISSP only after the exam and the documented experience, and a certificate that does not appear in ISC2’s verification is not a CISSP.
Source: ISC2 — Member verification. Checked 9 October 2026.
How many CISSP certified in the world?
ISC2 does not publish a CISSP-only headcount on the pages checked for this article. What it does state is a figure for all its certifications together: more than 270,000 certified members and associates.
So how many CISSP certified in the world is not something this page can answer with a precise number. The figure above includes holders of every ISC2 certification, not only CISSP.
Source: ISC2 — About ISC2. Checked 9 October 2026.
The CISSP certification path and ISSAP
A typical CISSP certification path runs from the exam, through Associate of ISC2 if the experience is not yet there, to full CISSP and then, for some, a specialisation in architecture, engineering or management.
For the CISSP ISSAP certification — ISSAP, Information Systems Security Architecture Professional — ISC2 describes an ideal credential for a chief security architect, analyst or similar role. It lists the required work experience as “CISSP + 2 Years or 7 years cumulative”. Check the ISSAP page for the full experience rules before planning around it.
Source: ISC2 — ISSAP: Information Systems Security Architecture Professional. Checked 9 October 2026.
Certified Ethical Hacker vs CISSP, and CISM vs CISSP
Certified Ethical Hacker vs CISSP compares two different jobs. CEH, from EC-Council, is about offensive testing — thinking like an attacker. CISSP, from ISC2, is about designing and running the security programme the tester is probing. They are often held together by people who move from technical work into leadership.
CISM certification vs CISSP is closer. CISM, from ISACA, focuses on information security management and governance; CISSP covers eight domains from risk management to software security, with more technical breadth. If your role is mainly governance, CISM is the narrower fit; if it spans architecture and operations, CISSP covers more of it.
