CISSP study guide: materials, books and how to prepare
Good CISSP exam preparation starts with what ISC2 itself publishes: the exam outline that has defined the eight domains since 15 April 2024, its official study materials, and the exam format — 100 to 150 items in three hours, with 700 of 1,000 points needed to pass. Start with the ISC2 exam outline
Every CISSP study guide worth using is built on the same document: ISC2’s CISSP Certification Exam Outline. ISC2 calls it a roadmap — “Use the exam outline as a roadmap to build a targeted study plan” — and it is the closest thing to an official syllabus. The current version has an effective date of 15 April 2024; ISC2’s exam refresh FAQ confirms the exam was updated on that date, and the outline page announced no newer version when checked on 9 October 2026.
The outline names the eight domains your CISSP study materials must cover:
- Security and Risk Management
- Asset Security
- Security Architecture and Engineering
- Communication and Network Security
- Identity and Access Management (IAM)
- Security Assessment and Testing
- Security Operations
- Software Development Security

Official ISC2 CISSP study resources
ISC2’s self-study page for CISSP lists its own resources. Several cost nothing, which makes them the natural first step of any CISSP exam prep:

The official CISSP study guide and other books
Two books carry ISC2’s name. The ISC2 CISSP official study guide — full title ISC2 CISSP Certified Information Systems Security Professional Official Study Guide — is the one most candidates mean when they search for the official CISSP study guide. The Official ISC2 CISSP CBK Reference is the other; ISC2 describes it as “the authoritative common body of knowledge (CBK) from ISC2”. The first is written to teach towards the exam, the second is a reference work you look things up in.
Beyond those, ISC2’s own book list names several independent titles, but this page does not rank third-party books. When you compare any CISSP exam preparation book or a stack of CISSP certification books, use checks that do not depend on anyone’s ranking:
- Does the CISSP certification book state that it covers the exam outline effective 15 April 2024?
- Does it cover all eight domains in the outline’s own terms, rather than reorganising them?
- Does it include scenario questions with explanations, not only definitions?
- Is it a study guide (teaching) or a reference (looking up)? Most candidates need one of each at most.

Which edition of the official study guide?
Editions matter because the exam outline changes. If you are looking at the CISSP official study guide 10th edition or any other edition, check the cover or introduction for the outline it was written against: the current CISSP exam has used the outline effective 15 April 2024. A CISSP exam book written for an earlier outline is still useful for core concepts, but it may organise topics differently and miss what changed.
The same applies to a CISSP study guide 2026 search: no new outline had been announced by ISC2 when checked on 9 October 2026, so material written for the April 2024 outline is current.

CISSP study guide PDF downloads
Searches for a CISSP study guide PDF often end on file-sharing sites. The official study guide is a commercially published book, so a CISSP official study guide 10th edition PDF free download from such a site is an unauthorised copy, and you cannot tell whether the file is complete, current or even the edition it claims to be. If you want a digital copy, buy the ebook from a legitimate bookseller.
The same caution applies to anything sold as an ISC2 CISSP official study guide 10th edition PDF bundled with “real exam questions”. ISC2 does not publish live exam items, and the official PDFs worth downloading are ISC2’s own, starting with the exam outline.

How to study for the CISSP
The CISSP is broad rather than deep in one tool: eight domains, a three-hour adaptive exam of 100 to 150 items, and a pass mark of 700 out of 1,000 points. That shapes how to study for the CISSP effectively. A workable approach alternates three activities:
- Learn: one domain at a time from the official study guide or your training, using the exam outline as a checklist.
- Practise: short sets of scenario questions on that domain, reading the explanation for every option — including the ones you got right.
- Review: track which domain you miss most and go back to it. Near the end, sit timed sessions to check you can hold your focus for three hours.

Building a CISSP study plan
ISC2 publishes no recommended CISSP study time and no official study plan, so treat any fixed number of weeks or hours you see as someone’s opinion rather than a rule. What ISC2 does give you is the structure: eight domains, each broken into objectives in the exam outline.
A CISSP study plan that follows that structure assigns each domain a block of time, works objective by objective, and leaves the last stretch for mixed-domain practice under time pressure. Your own background decides the weighting: a network engineer will need less time on Communication and Network Security and more on Security and Risk Management or Software Development Security. ISC2 requires five years of cumulative paid work experience for the certification, so most candidates are studying alongside a full-time job — a fixed weekly schedule beats occasional long sessions.

What good CISSP prep has in common
Whatever mix of CISSP study materials you choose, good CISSP certification preparation covers three needs: the content of all eight domains, the management-level perspective the exam expects, and enough realistic practice to find your weak domains. A book, a course and a question bank each cover one or two of those; few cover all three.
The same checks apply to any CISSP exam study guide, course or question bank: current outline, scenario-style questions, explanations for every answer, and honest timing. Paying more does not change those criteria.
