ISC2 CISSP training: the two official formats

ISC2’s CISSP page lists two forms of official ISC2 CISSP training. CISSP Online Instructor-Led Training is a live virtual class with an ISC2 Authorized Instructor, whom ISC2 describes as a CISSP-certified expert. CISSP Online Self-Paced Training is an adaptive online course you work through alone, with 90 or 180 days of access from the date of purchase.

Both use ISC2’s own material — the Official ISC2 CISSP eTextbook and the Official ISC2 CISSP Study Questions eBook — and both include pre- and post-course assessments. ISC2 also states that its official online training qualifies for Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credits, which count towards keeping the certification later.

CISSP online training with an instructor

ISC2’s live CISSP certification online training runs on two schedules. The full-time version is 5 consecutive days, Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM in the listed time zone. The part-time version runs 8 weeks with two evening sessions a week of two and a half hours each.

Course materials and videos are available for 180 days from the first live session. Besides the eTextbook and study questions eBook, ISC2 lists an instructor-led study plan, peer discussions and session recordings, applied scenarios and case studies, practice questions, a glossary and technical support chat.

CISSP online self-paced training

Of ISC2’s CISSP certification online courses, the self-paced one is the option for studying on your own schedule. Besides the official eTextbook and study questions eBook, it includes interactive content, knowledge checks and end-of-domain quizzes, online interactive flash cards, domain study sheets, a glossary and an analytics dashboard, with email support and round-the-clock technical chat.

Access is 90 or 180 days from purchase, so choose the longer option if your exam date is still months away. The standalone course does not include an exam; bundles that add one give you 365 days to sit it. ISC2 lists a 20% discount for members and 10% for people who sign up as ISC2 Candidates.

CISSP training and certification: buying the exam with the course

Both ISC2 formats are sold as “Training Only” or with the exam. For the instructor-led course, the standard Training + Exam bundle includes one exam attempt with a 365-day window from purchase. The Peace of Mind Protection option includes two exam attempts within 180 days of purchase, under ISC2’s retake policy.

ISC2 does not show prices on these course pages; the amounts appear in the cart and depend on your region. One thing no course changes about CISSP training: certification still needs the five years of experience. Whether CISSP training and exam together are worth it comes down to timing: buy the bundle if you will sit the exam within the window, and the training alone if you are still years away from the experience requirement.

CISSP bootcamps: what the term means here

A CISSP bootcamp usually means an intensive course compressed into about a week. ISC2’s own CISSP pages do not use the word bootcamp; the closest thing to an ISC2 CISSP bootcamp is its full-time instructor-led schedule — five consecutive days, eight hours a day, live online. That makes it, in effect, a CISSP online bootcamp from the issuer itself.

Whoever runs a CISSP training bootcamp, the format suits people who already know most of the eight domains and need structure and pace. It suits beginners less well: three hours and up to 150 items cover security and risk management, asset security, architecture and engineering, network security, identity and access management, assessment and testing, security operations and software development security. If you are new to several of those, a part-time course over weeks gives the material time to settle. The best CISSP bootcamp for you is the one whose pace matches what you already know — CISSP bootcamp training only works if the five days are revision, not first contact.

How to choose the best CISSP training

There is no official ranking of CISSP training providers, so the best CISSP training online or in a classroom comes down to fit and to a few things you can check. Whether you compare a CISSP certification training course, CISSP certification classes, a CISSP certification boot camp, a shorter CISSP certification prep course or self-paced CISSP online courses, put each through these questions:

• Is it official? ISC2 delivers training itself and through ISC2 Official Training Partners; anything else should say which outline it follows.
• Is it current? The course should cover the eight domains of the current CISSP exam outline.
• Does it include the exam, and how long is the window to use it?
• How long is access to materials — 90, 180 days or longer — compared with your planned exam date?
• Does it give timed practice, with explanations, so you can see which domain is weak?
• Does it qualify for CPE credits? ISC2 says its official online training does.

Free CISSP training: what is actually free

ISC2’s CISSP courses are paid products. What ISC2 offers free is study support: its CISSP flash cards cover all eight domains, with ISC2 saying “Fill out the short form for FREE access to this resource.” The form asks for contact details, and if you tick that you are interested in training, ISC2 shares your request with one of its Official Training Partners.

So free CISSP training online exists in pieces rather than as a full course. If you search for CISSP online training free of charge, expect study aids like these, not ISC2’s full course. Before relying on any free CISSP online training, check which version of the outline it covers and whether it includes explanations or just answers. The exam itself is never free, and the certification also needs the five years of experience.

CISSP training material and video

The core CISSP training materials from ISC2 are the Official ISC2 CISSP eTextbook and the Official ISC2 CISSP Study Questions eBook; both come with the instructor-led and the self-paced course. The instructor-led course adds session recordings, which is the closest ISC2 comes to CISSP video training. If you want CISSP training videos for every domain, note that the self-paced course describes interactive content rather than a video series.

Whatever CISSP training material you use — and whatever CISSP certification training online you add to it — the eight domains of ISC2’s exam outline are the checklist. A video or book that cannot show where it covers each domain is not a complete preparation on its own.

Can you take the CISSP test online?

People searching for an online CISSP exam usually mean one of two things. The real exam is booked through ISC2 and scheduled on the Pearson website, and ISC2’s exam-day guidance is written for the test center: you bring two forms of identification and follow the exam center process. The ISC2 exam pages checked on 9 October 2026 describe no at-home option for the CISSP.

The other meaning is practice. A CISSP online test — a timed set of practice questions — is a good way to check readiness before you book, and both ISC2 courses include practice questions and assessments. Just keep the two apart: no practice percentage converts into ISC2’s 1,000-point scale.

Likewise, there is no separate online CISSP certification. Whether you train online or in a room, the CISSP certification online and offline is the same credential, earned by passing the exam and meeting the experience requirement. Once you buy the exam, ISC2 gives you up to 365 days to schedule and sit it.

CISSP ISSEP training and other concentrations

ISSEP, the Information Systems Security Engineering Professional, is a separate ISC2 certification that recognises your ability to apply engineering principles and processes to develop secure systems; ISC2 says it was developed with the U.S. National Security Agency. ISC2 lists its experience requirement as “CISSP + 2 Years or 7 years cumulative”.

CISSP ISSEP training is sold separately from CISSP training: ISC2 offers ISSEP online self-paced training with 90- or 180-day access and online instructor-led training, each with exam bundles. The ISSEP exam is 3 hours and 125 items, in English.
